  • In this episode, I finally drop the oil pan on my 1937 Plymouth coupe. It's 84 year old and the pan has not been dropped before! What's inside?!

    Btw, cars like this just don't exist in the UK, they just rust away

    Really good job buddy!! I think the only thing I can say I would have done different is painting the pan.

      Thanks James! The thought crossed my mind but I figured it would stand out too much with nothing else having been painted.

    i did the same thin on my 36 pickup, the oil pump screen was like yours' light did not shine through. and lots of sludge in the pan

      Good to hear! Its amazing to see how much sludge builds up with Non-detergent oil. 🛢 I put on another 40 miles and no leaks so far.

    Hi Terry, what was the solution you dipped the pickup filter into, it worked very well.

      Hey Bart, it's called "Chem-Dip carburetor & Parts Cleaner" by a company named "Berryman".
      Hope this helps!

    You should actually use detergent oil or use 10W40 oil, to clean all the in side of engine, this best foe this engine!

    • @FlatheadTerry
      @FlatheadTerry  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment William. With this engine never being taken apart, I chose to use non-detergent oil because I don't want to dissolve and circulate 85 year old sludge through out the oil system, especially thru the crankshaft.

    38 Plymouth here: I pulled the oil pan and clutch housing dust cover for clean out. I found the felt oil seal between the clutch housing cover and rear of oil pan was pretty well gone. All the usual parts places for old Mopar don't have it, any ideas for making a new one?

    • @FlatheadTerry
      @FlatheadTerry  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Rob, I don't know where to get that felt specifically however, I would recommend local fabric stores like JoAnn Fabrics and Michaels. If they don't have it, then I'd check some of the online stores or even Amazon. Wish I could help!

      @Flathead Terry's Garage I found a sheet of F10 felt at Grainger. Cut a new one and it's as good as new.

    I got a question is your front passenger side brake line original and if so is it copper? Most my fuel and brake lines ,I think are original to car, and I m no to sure on this brake line cuz it's the only copper line??looks original but not sure

    • @FlatheadTerry
      @FlatheadTerry  ปีที่แล้ว

      All of mine are steel. Copper is too soft to hold the hydraulic pressure so if yours is, I'd suggest replacing it with steel.

      @@FlatheadTerryIm not sure if it was replaced but it does look original,copper is a good line to use for brake lines since they do not rust and they easily hold the brake pressure, it is odd that only one line is copper so I'm guessing it was replaced though never know due to a lot of other odd ball stuff they did back then. I looked up copper brake lines on utube and found quite a bit of info

      I don't think anyone makes a repop so ask up on the Facebook groups. Also call Mopar Pro and Andy Bernbaum.com to see if they have any good used ones.

    • @richd5749
      @richd5749 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just mentioning this oil pan issue of almost no replacement, but i swapped an oil pan from a 37 Dodge truck over to my 37 Dodge 2dr Coupe, both had the darn near same engine. Thank goodness, because the rebuild is doomed without it. Old timers say vintage auto parts are now very extinct and fewer sellers are showing up at swap meets, just saying, i do believe in blessings👍👀

    Why clean it and still use non detergent oil?...It's like taking a shower and putting dirty clothes back on.

    • @FlatheadTerry

      Interesting question. With this motor being over 86 years old and never being apart, it has decades old oil "scale" in it. In this video, at 1:52 - 2:51 , I show this "scale" throughout the crankcase. You're suggesting I run Detergent oil to begin removing this? For what reason? To keep the oil pan clean? This would then circulate this debris throughout the entire lubrication system. Also, note that these old flatheads use "By-Pass" design oil filters. They don't collect debris like modern oil systems. They only filter a portion of the oil as it flows thru the entire flathead motor but its better than nothing. Also, I had a friend put detergent oil in his old high mileage '62 Chevy trying to "clean it out" he said. Soon after he regretted it when his oil pressure dropped and a destroyed a crank bearing. So no detergent for me!
