- Diablo 2 challenges usually involve random restrictions, primarily a slew of them applied to the player. So, I figured why not take that concept as far as I could go; could you beat Diablo 2 by only relying on the Mercenary? A run in which you never attack once? All in all, it seems pretty fair to me. This isn't a charity, really make him earn that paycheck.

Few tips:
Decrepify against bosses is king because it reduces the amount of nasty spellcasts significantly.
Dim Vision disables everything except basic attacks on affected monsters. No Lighting from Souls, no arrows from archers, no resurrecting from resurrecting fucks.
Attract is literally the best curse you can imagine for crowd-control. You curse one mob, which gets a higher threat level than you or your mercenary. A monster that is in direct contact with you or the merc will literally turn around to hit the cursed mob, if it's right next to it. It can't be overwritten which is awesome as it allows you to curse the rest with whatever you want. Instead of all the enemies bearing down on you they fight among themselves, making it much easier to deal with groups. There will be one downside for you. It does actually attract more enemies to the fight that would be out of range normally. It works great if you intend to blow everything up with corpse explosion. Not quite sure how it might work out for you.

Merc was always one of the coolest things to me in Diablo 2 - that and how the necro skele minions look progressively more 'n' more badass with levels. Good luck in Nightmare... looks like you'll need it.

I'm impressed you didn't just IM normal. It's pretty easy to get through the bosses when you use IM.
Don't forget the to hit ratio is the same on mercs. Your boy needs a few levels so he doesn't get worked too hard.

Emilio is still THE chad of mercenaries imo but since the rest of them got buffed in D2R I've been impressed by even the iron wolves. Ok impressed might be a strong word...

This is a very fun idea for a video, and the commentary is hilarious. Although this is a good example of why everyone who likes diablo should play project diablo 2. The merc ai is radically improved, they can wear boots belt and gloves, and all five acts' mercs are a valid choice! Great vid
If you gona use an a2 mercenary, make sure to try and give him gear that increased his attack speed and resistances. Also life steal is a must, so you can use a different curse other than life tap. I would play around trying to craft savage polearms (one diamond, one belt, one kris and a staff in the horadric cube). Cannot wait for part 2! This video was really entertaining!!

I once played a self found melee sorc and she got carried by the Merc entirely right from hell act1.
With some ethereal blue scythe with 180ed and tals face.

1. Chipper skull into socket shield helps so much before first merc. (And actually carries all normal diff. if you want it to)
2. Theres a cube recipe for polearms. Any diamond + kris + staff + belt = 66%-80% magic polearm. This recipe carries hard cause it can get a second magic stat (like flat bonus damage) and also come as nm or hell version of that weapon.

9:51 I have to clarify Andariel is the Lord of Anguish and is the twin sister of Duriel the Lord of Pain aka Andariel is mental suffering and Duriel is physical. Andarield would delight in the PTSD afterwards the CBT would ultimately be Duriel's domain.

i recken barb is the best for this type of run. taunt acutely deals with a lot of problems in the game the merc struggles with. it stops ressurecting mobs from acutely ressurecting there allys since they focus on attacking, reduces the amount of casts casters do to try to attack. and as you said lets you be a meat shield.
also i am pretty sure battle command does work on the skills with the merc so it will increase there damage output.

The answer before watching it is yes. Especially as a Paladin with Holy Bolt. Assassin has Cloak of Shadows which breaks the game.

On necro you have a great option to use bone walls with A1 or A3 merc, to keep them in safety
Love the video man but if you’re really trying to corner the d2 nerds you need to provide ample gear updates for you and the Merc!
I was thinking about it while watching you face Mephisto, the Amazon and her passives (Dodge for melee and Avoid for ranged, Evade for dodging while moving) might have been useful for face tanking bosses, not to mention using Inner Sight to lower their defense.
The Decoy skill doesn't do damage, and if so, that could be another potential damage sponge for the merc, combine that with the Avoid and Dodge passives and that is two meat shields that bosses will have to chew through to get to the hero of Sanctuary, the merc (unless the boss just decides to toast the merc anyway lol).
The only worry is not being able to break physical immunities like the Necromancer on the higher difficulties.

I would have never thought it could be done in normal difficulty. I would have never thought to do it, either. It was hilarious to watch though.
I think the barb could be a better choice. You can still "curse" enemies with shouts and use grim ward to break groups of enemies AND item find.
Gotta get a might merc and keep his gear up to date. Avoid life regen, as that doesn't work on mercenaries and favor high damage slow weapons. Most of the mercs damage comes from jab anyway and that makes three attacks at a fast speed, so boosting those as high as possible work very well until hell difficulty. Faster hit recovery is huge for mercs as well and lots of hp works out better for them than defence. Procs on striking also work well with act 3 mercs.

Hey Seer, Seeing how you're still using a Razortine which do 13-22 dmg, you could use the Horadric recipe: Diamond+kris+staff+belt to make a Savage polearm and get even a Exceptional polearm with Lifeleech and massive( subjective) enhanced damage and have a easier time.

Made my own necro LazeyLarry since i got so much fun from watching this: Made myself the following rules: Offline, once you have cain: no more using scrolls of identify, steal money from the shared stash but put it back later, have other champions shop for you and use that gear (since Larry is lazy he uses the hard owned work of others), on normal only use the act1 rogue, once in nightmare: Larry is allowed to buy the act 2 merc, once in hell, he is allowed once more to get a new merc of his choice. (only one time swap in nightmare and or hell). No summons except if they auto spawn from runeword/set/unique items when you are struck, aura from runewords is allowed, pick up EVERY coin that is on the ground or that falls from monsters/chests but only with the auto pickup (Larry is too lazy to pick it up by himself). Also if Larry is too lazy and forgets to repair an item in time, once the item is broken (red) it has to be discarted on the floor. Thx for the vid, it's great fun to watch and to play it myself. Edit:forgot to say: using shields with skulls and the charged bolt, frost nova or nova proccing items are a must have in this setup at the lower levels

Surely barb leap spam would be the best, if you allow non damage moves, that move can stun the whole screen for ever and i believe it also works on superuniques, I made one for Hardcore when Resurrected first came out, it was boring, but it was amazing being unable to die, because of your crazy cc and thick barb body.
Enigma is an option in a run with mercenary only lmao i would love to see the farming sessions and humanity slowly leaving your carcass
I believe you pick paladin for this, use a wand for lifetap charges as needed and use a telestaff to reposition ur merc as needed. In general Pally is a lot tankier and has thorns which suck but aren’t completely useless?
This one time I played an Iron Golem Necro without a mercenary. I invested big into Dim vision, Golem Mastery and CE. Character became not viable in act3 nightmare. The jungles were okay, but in the city of Kurast I could not out damage monster regeneration. Honestly, if I had hired a mercenary, that would have been a godly build.
Yes you definitely can and it has been done before. It all depends how good gear your merc has if you run out of money early or late.
