I think that's the true point of the film. It, alas, has been hijacked by bitter people making it an issue of women versus men. It's not. It's about us all getting lost along life's highways and byways. At the end of the film, when Shirley watches Joe arrive and struggle up the road with the suitcase her heart goes out to him and she acknowledges that 'he needs to feel the sun on his skin and to be in water that's as deep as forever." It's supposed to be a unifying message, not a divisive one.
I had completely forgotten Patti Austin sang this gorgeous song from a movie I’ve loved for so long. Man or woman, this song is about everybody…me included.
One of the best film ever! I watched it in my early twenties, thinking 42, Shirley's age, was so far off. Hmmmmmmmmm.

I think I prefer this version more than I do her album version..there is something sad and melancholy compared to her other version..maybe it is the music..anyway..thanks for posting
