- Some early morning Club Flying. Low level flying is not for everyone and that's fine. It's something I'll occasionally do early in the morning where nobody else is around. It's a lot of fun and really makes ya feel like a fighter pilot, lol even if you only are doing 70mph. Now, there is an argument that this may be risky if the engine quits but a few things to think about. I'm close enough to the shore to get pretty close to the vacant beach and, the water is incredibly calm so would be much easier to ditch, and having open water to ditch in is a lot safer than 90% of the other areas one would have to put an airplane down if engine quit. (think Suburbs).
The FAR's you want to be familiar with for this type of Flying is CFR FAR 91.119
§ 91.119 Minimum safe altitudes: General.
Except when necessary for takeoff or landing, no person may operate an aircraft below the following altitudes:
(a) Anywhere. An altitude allowing, if a power unit fails, an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface.
(b) Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft.
(c) Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure.
(d) Helicopters, powered parachutes, and weight-shift-control aircraft. If the operation is conducted without hazard to persons or property on the surface-
(1) A helicopter may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph (b) or (c) of this section, provided each person operating the helicopter complies with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the FAA; and
(2) A powered parachute or weight-shift-control aircraft may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph (c) of this section

Your videos are what help inspire me to just get out and fly. Don’t even need a destination. Just get up and be thankful we have this freedom and privilege.
Thank you! really appreciate that
wow Joe just when I thought you couldn't top your high bar of cinematic excellence, you release this....just speechless
Wow, thanks! I really appreciate that
So early in the orange glow, the houses with their boat docks, the pristine airport, the sea, the bridges, the low-level flying, your legal expertise, ... This whole vid is the bomb!
Thank you!
I do this in my Cub. Love to low level. But yes its risky if your trusty Continental lets you down. But the Risk/Rewards theory says it worth it. Good engine and fuel maintenance required. I never go this low over ground without multiple passes to check for hidden power lines etc. stay over a known route and don’t deviate. Never go low in a strange field or place.
Well said!
A little stick, rudder and some avgas......great video!
Happy belated fathers day. This has got to be what Orville and Wilbur had in mind.
Thanks for that early morning flight.
Thanks for the ride Joe, what a great video!
Thank you!
Stick and Rudder flying at its best! Outstanding presentation as always! 👏👏👏
Thank you so much 👍
😎 So Cool! Used to do this in my C-150 years ago, same places. 1 hr flight, vs. 2.5 hours driving to OC,NJ. Sure miss when 100LL was $2.50 a gallon. Can’t thank you enough for these J-3 Cub videos! 🤩✌️
My pleasure!!!
Hey @insta360, forget everything else everyone is doing with your cameras. JoeC, and the flying and camerawork, is the 🐐!
Stunning! Most amazing aviation video I’ve seen in years. Thank you! Great skills too !
Who came here because of the new CAS J3 Cub for MSFS 2020 ? What an amazing plane and a grat pilot! The video with his daughter made me have a tear (or two). Subscribed!
Thank you!, much appreciated
Lol me actually
Really good flying too , I like flying this type of plane alot more then when I flew a Cessna 172 for my private pilot ticket
That‘s an amazing video! Definitely one of your best. Thanks a lot for sharing these epic videos
Glad you enjoyed it! and thank you!
That was totally amazing! A treat for the eyes. Great video Joe
Thanks David! Really appreciate it!
This is an awesome video. An amazing showcase of the magic of flight in its purest form. Fantastic cinematography, and perfectly paired music. Thank you.
Thank you very much! Sincerely appreciate it!
When I was taking lessons down at MIV, my instructor Adam, took me down to Sea Isle City to fly just over 500’ above the oven, well off the beach.
Just got home yesterday from OCNJ. Loved out time there and your the aerial tour!
Incredible Videos like always Joe! Happy Summer!
Thanks Robert! You as well
Thanks Joe. Best video yet!
Thank you!
Beautiful ride!
Sweet video Joe!! … I do that kind of stuff on the west coast also in my airknocker ! … I just don’t have the videos that you have!… clear mornings are somewhat of a rarity on the central coast of California this time of year,… ( the Fog-Monster moves in in the evenings),…but when they happen, I gotta go jump off the ball & go surfing in the Chief!…. I sure love watching your vids! .. like I’ve said in the past, “makes me want to go Flyin’ every time!”…
Thanks again Joe,👍🏻… keep the shiny side up!
Thank you!
Same here @aeroncajoe - C-85 Aeronca with door off and heat on at dawn and a mug of coffee. Heaven on Earth.

Just beautiful. Thankyou for sharing
My pleasure!, thanks for watching
WOW what an amazing video. I agree. I like early Sunday morning flights before anyone is up. Thus Sun has not had its first cup of coffee yet.
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful
Thank you!
Incredible use of X4. Wow. Thanks for bringing us along.
You bet!
Lovely imagery.
Should be viewed on the largest screen available.
Thank you! Really appreciate that!
Stunning shots mate!
Thanks a lot!
Beautiful video…well done
Thanks!
Love it! 👌😃
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow dude! That footage is amazing!! How the hell?!
Thank you!
Patrick spotted…switching to weapons hot, fox one! 😂 amazing video and I can’t help but think you were running the Top Gun Maverick canyon mission…too cool fly low 👌
😂😂😂
😎👍L83👍nice weekend, many greetings
Same to you
My favorite mode of flight...and FUN it really doesn't get any better!!!
Really is a blast. I wish everyone could experience this. We would have a lot more pilots!

I’ll take good care of her! I promise 😁
@@Bananasssssssss 😂😂👍
Relax mom
Great video
Thanks! I appreciate that
Spectacular again, mine would wake up the whole shore......lol
hahahah
Epic camera angles. 6:00 reality looking more and more like a simulation every day 😂
Haha thank you!!
Nice flight. Glad you do risk assessments. Me myself, as much fun as it may be, would have to pass for the simple fact I wouldn't risk leaving my family father/husband less, as far as adding more risk to the normal dangers of flying. Not a judgment.
Great go pro shots btw. Safe flying my internet friend.
You make great points. No argument from me! I try to mitigate it as best I can but of course if something were to happen it would never be “worth it” hard to find a balance sometimes.
@@Bananasssssssss I'm glad you didn't get offended, all I could think was "altitude, altitude" lol.
Was a great flight. Not tryen to be a buzz kill. Take care.
In 1981 I flew banners out of Ocean City, MD. Had a similar experience flying up the beach over Assateague Island towing a banner. Got a bit too low. You should have seen the rooster tail.
Open air over the water. Not much better than that. I did my first solo this morning with 10 hours.
CONGRATS that's awesome! and really impressive! took me over twice that, lol.
@@Bananasssssssss thank you! I’m trying to be a “40.1er” lol
Congrats!
Honestly, you don't need the music. Just the sound of the engine is the best music.
So pretty!❤
Thank you! 😊
Super cool. Now give that thing a bath!
Hahaha it’s amazing how much salt is on this thing now 😂
Fantastic start to a Father's Day for sure. As always, superb videography. What is your set up? 2 360 cameras (wing and tail), cockpit, and what on the cowling? Are the 360 both the X4?
Thanks! Yeah, so this was actually two separate flights, lol. I didn't want the Cowl Mounted Insta 360 to be a distraction from the cockpit, and when I was recording from the cowl, I didn't want the Camera in the cockpit to be a distraction. I am using two Insta 360 One x 4s, (Strut, cowl, Tail) and a GoPro for the inside cockpit stuff
Yeah that rear mounted camera really shows off your coordination skills Joe. You certainly have the feel. (I still have to glance at the turn coordinator, lol.)
Thanks!! Starting to feel really comfortable in the plane. Almost like I’m wearing it. Also a good reminder to stay super vigilant because thats when we as pilots make careless mistakes
Joe, what was the lowest altitude you held?
@@Marchetti7 not too terribly sure but probably 20ft??
@@Bananasssssssss ballsy but a blast, no doubt
Being an Aircam owner/pilot I spend a lot of my time down low. I moved to a place that's inside a 30 mile Class B airspace which means I have to install an ADSB system. I'm worried about the automated violation letters that are looming out there. I know of many that have received them. Mostly for the system being turning off for some reason. The system being turned off or failing is a violation. Big brother is watching.
Dream Airplane right there. I didn't even know about the Auto Violation letters. That's ridiculous.
As an old cg aviator I have spent a bunch of time flying low up a beach and it is great. Just watch for kites. 8:11 8:15
How are you getting these outside the plane shots they are awesome
Thank you! Using an Insta360 One X 4 camera. Here’s how I mount them.

How are we getting these remote camera angles?
Dude. I wanna be like you someday.
Great video Joe but let me caution you on how close you get to breakers and the shore and other aircraft. Dad was just outside the breakers in his J3 and was reported by a lifeguard. It was a 6 th month suspension of his ppl.
Wow! Really!? That’s awful. Curious how they claimed he was within 500ft of Anyone? (Also why I do it at 5:45am. Minimum amount of people anywhere
Bananasssssssss. Yeah it was crazy . He had done it a dozen times before I had even flown with him on several occasions but, that finial time there were surfers outside the break and the life guard thought he was too close and , those big black 12” numbers are easy to see and he filed a complaint with FSDO in San Diego. Dad had to call and go down and explain and even though the life guard wasn’t sure of the distance the FAA still took the punitive path.
@@willcall9431 ughhh that’s awful. Yeah I don’t know how I feel about posting these videos. I truly do go out of my way to make sure I am 100% legal but still, never know who is going to complain yanno.
Aviao pra homem serio voar
J3 uma lenda
At first I thought you was gonna skim the water with your wheels like I see many people do. I did a face plant in my plane (Quicksilver sprint) at full power. It would of been a real bad day if I'd have been over water. Broke my neck and shoulder. the shin area of my legs was hit from both directions causing massive bruising but didn't break legs. There's often a fine line between scooting along at low altitude and stall speed if your landing gear hits too much friction.
Glad you’re ok. Back to flying or did you give it up?
@@Bananasssssssss I dismantled the whole plane and rebuilt it. We're flying again.
One Q here. Do you have to leave this small window always open or folded while flying?
Nope, I close em in the winter
are the shots from front/behind the cub taken by a mounted camera?? how do u get such insane shots lol
Thanks! It's a 360º Camera. Here is a video I made with all the mounts etc
th-cam.com/video/Tm5fQyeFOyc/w-d-xo.html
Just curious, why do you sit in the back seat?
Weight & Balance! It’s actually a much better view and more comfortable
Does flying with the hatch open cause extra drag?
Little bit but worth it
If you crash in that marsh it will take rescuers a long time to get to you.
Very beautiful, until we have a power plant failure.
I mean....... That's literally the risk everywhere. Taking off at an airport with trees around? "very beautiful, until the engine quits", same can be said for airpots in Suburban areas etc. A plane is safest in the Hangar but planes are meant to be flown
Really liking your videos lately. Question... are you using Insta360s and, if so, how are you syncing them? On my gopros, I can use TOD as timecode, but the Insta360 is a PITA to edit!
Thanks! I actually just try to to press "record" as close to possible on both cameras and then sync them as best I can from visual cues. It isn't ideal but I figure I get "close" enough so it makes it a decent compromise.
@@Bananasssssssssclap in front of all your cameras at once, then you can use that to get the video and audio across them all perfectly
It's legal but is it smart.................no shoulder harness if you hit the water you are stopping fast and you are going to end up on your back.......Have fun.
The safest thing is to just keep the airplane parked. Touching down sub 40mph on water wouldn’t be as violent as going into trees. Just kind of how I approach it. Lastly, it’s a wide angle lens so it looks like Im miles away from shore but other than the left turn out over the water, if the engine quits I’m making it pretty close if not to the shore
@@Bananasssssssss just saying. I fly a Bonanza, believe me an engine out is going to be a bit more severe then the cub. There is no such thing as total safety, we just do the best we can.
I'd be afraid of hitting a pelican
Definitely a few seagulls around but they are usually faster than my Cub 😂
Who cares if you're flying that low and others don't think its safe. It's none of their business. Anyone who would nit pick that needs to grow up and understand people are going to do what they want to do. Get over it Mom. 😂
if you dont want to land on it ..... dont fly over it .....
That means you literally can’t fly over anything but an airport 😂
So glad I found your channel. I turn 70 soon, and remember flying to OC with my dad and his friends. Back when there was an airport on the Echelon Mall site we would fly down for a dip in the ocean.. He was a ww2 instructor, after that (before I was born) he would land on the Cape May beach and give quick touch and go rides.
I logged some hours for glider cert, ended up boating all those marsh lands instead. And lived on the banks of the Mullica for many years.
looks like you have another subscriber
What a awesome experience…..great videos , the quality is outstanding. What’s up with those external views of the airplane ? Drone ?
Thank you! Those shots are actually done with a 360° Camera. Pretty wild technology. If interested heres a video.
