Fun Fact ... For anyone watch 4,5 hours of Virtua Cop history in Pandamonium channel, will knew that Saturn beat Model 2 in texture color. So the texture in Saturn will always better and have more details compared to Model 2 because model 2 still basically using grayscale almost transparent texture mapped into a colored/shaded polygon, thats it why its looks a bit muted compared to saturn texture.
A real story when I use to work at Electronic Boutique: I put up Sega Saturn's VF2 on both large-screen monitors that were in front of the store. I played VF2 and, like a true expert, I showcased Akira pulling off combos, switches, combo with his knee attack, high and low counterattacks, etc. VF fans would have been proud and in awe but most of the passers-by shouted: "WOW! TEKKEN 2 LOOKS AMAZING! WE GOT TO BUY A PLAYSTATION" Ugh! I hated that. I hated that so much. Even had the Sega Saturn console and game logo in front of the store even though EB HQ ordered Pandamonium presentation instead (which they still got but I had to show people what VF was all about), but it was ineffective as the Playstation word of mouth around that time was too strong for the Sega Saturn to have a chance. Damn... I tried. The only other games that had the best effect in swaying the audience were Sega Rally and the Panzer Dragoon series, but you could only use those games for so long.
Don't blame yourself man. You tried. :( Playstation was just too strong of a brand at that time for people to consider other options, not to mention all the behind the scenes bullshit with Sega of Japan and Sega of America really doomed the system.
Shame that they didn't add much in terms of story and mode in that port especially when you compared it to it's competitor Tekken 2 who had at least ending cinematics for the characters.
I think Virtua Fighter is better without flashy cinematic cutscenes or an overarching storyline. That’s what the awesome animated adaptation (and eventually Shenmue) were made for, anyway. By having faithful motion capture of real-life martial arts, Virtua Fighter is all about the detail. A fighting game about actual fighting.
It always impressed me how not only does Virtua Fighter 2 arguably have better texture work on Sega Saturn but it also runs higher res (704x480) than on Sega Model 2.

I mean even near perfect would be stretching it. The arcade version has better 3D models, better textures on the characters as well as surrounding environment, 3D backgrounds, and better colors all around. Is it an amazing port for its time? Sure. is it perfect or near perfect, absolutely not.
This port actually runs at a higher framerate (59.94Hz, in the NTSC-J and NTSC-U releases) than the Model 2 arcade original does at 57.49Hz. The Japan-only 2004 PS2 version accounts for this and even has a 59.94Hz option. Not sure if the 2011-12 emulated releases of Model 2 games on 360 and PS3 account for the hertz differences. Sadly most of them have been delisted this year
I wouldn't say it's perfect, the backgrounds being images instead of 3d makes it look kinda odd, but in every other way it is definitely perfect, I actually like some things about the Saturn port more, like the hair on some of the characters looks better on saturn
if only the fighters megamix looked this good, on that game they sacrificed the polygon capacity making the characters look worse than virtua fighter 2, but despite that fighters megamix was fun to play.
The real sacrifice wasn't the poly count but the resolution, as Megamix used the Fighting Vipers iteration of the VF2 engine so it could have 3D destructible scenery and the 'armor breaking' system which heavily relied on lowering the resolution for a consistent frame rate. When it comes to raw visual fidelity on the Saturn, only one other fighting games can compare to VF2, Last Bronx.
Admiral job by Saturn. Animations and gameplay perfect. The lack of actual 3D BG is where this game lacks. The one stage I wanted to see was Shun di’s bridge. Nope it’s on land.

An amazing port of a game running on the then state of the art Model 2 arcade board. The Saturn had relatively weak 3D capabilities compared to its competitors so to see AM2 pull off this conversion was nothing short of outstanding.

This game, decathlete, Dead or Alive, exhumed(powersalve in the US) last bronx, etc. You can tell by these games that the saturn was more powerful than the PS1, but by the time the Saturn showed it's power, it was late. If these graphics came out at the beginning of the life of the Sega Saturn, maybe it would've been another story...
i wonder if they could've used the same trick Namco used for Tekken 3's backgrounds on PS1. Those look closer to their 3D counterparts, but these ones fro VF2 have much more depth and dynamic to them.
SEGA did greatly improve their use of VDP2 to replicate full 3D backgrounds with the game Last Bronx, which is another stunning and accurate port bordering on 'Arcade Perfect'.
Dead or Alive and Anarchy in the Nippon also do a great job faking the backgrounds with perspective distortion in the illustrations. It’s an old anime trick to fake 3D camera movements and those games really do a terrific job.
Sega Saturn was a unicorn back in the day pretty sure they were 600 bucks and this was in the mid 90s my cousin had one the only person I was aware of that had one out of tons of people I knew

Perfect? No. Besides texture stuff, stages were different entirely due to weird reasoning. Shun Di’s & Kage’s are noticeably different from the arcade.
ALMOST perfect - worse shadows, and textures when zoomed in. Actually, on closer look, some of the original polygons of the character models have been replaced with textures. Everything else looks perfect tho.

VF 2's gameplay mechanics are so dam good. It's pickup and play perfection. I didn't like Tekken 1 and 2 nearly as much. Tekken 3, however...
In 1995 these things cost a lot and Sega at the time didn't have time to elaborate their games while seeing their opponents growing.

The floor at the background looks like it’s floating at the saturn. Whereas the arcade actually has the floor in 3d
You can see how much attention they paid to matching the animation and the feel of the arcade. It moves and plays identically.

This is a very good port but not arcade perfect port (or satin version was missing polygons an objects such as the bridge over water stage, etc)
