He was great, but I also think John Cusack deserves recognition. I'm not overly familiar with Cusack's filmography, but I was under the impression he usually played more light-hearted characters. His performance here, as a deeply traumatised middle-aged Brian Wilson who had been through years of abuse took me by surprise

Actually, I can guarantee it won't be. It's a 2014 movie, it just had its wide release this year. So really, they should've acknowledged it a few months back. Real shame.
I've prolly heard God Only Knows a hundred times growing up and never had an opinion, but for some reason it finally hit me. watching the scene with Dano (Brian Wilson) on the piano, out of nowhere I thought "this is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard".
I guess the problem was that I didn't care. And once you take that away, the story isn't that great. In my opinion. Felt like hype over substance. But there you go..
I love the beach boys music but never knew about Brian's life before watching this. I thought it was very insightful, both with his personal traumas and the band's creative process, and also worked very nicely as a movie, despite the two competing timelines. Both actors' portrayals of Wilson are terrific, and visually the film looks beautiful. I found the romantic plot touching too. The last scene is wonderful.
"Even the happy songs sound sad"... I don't know who the guy playing Mike Love is but I like his delivery of that line ha. Saw this earlier this evening. Thought it was fantastic..... The music is amazing & Atticus Ross' score is brilliant. Dano and Cusack are both great; I think the casting of Cusack may seem a bit odd because Dano looks so much like a young Brian Wilson but he's really really good. Elizabeth Banks a great too, I've always thought she was a good actress but this is the best performance I've seen her give in a long while. Even though the 2 timelines differ tonally at first, they begin to merge rather beautifully as Wilson's [Paul Dano] mental state begins to deteriorate. I really thought it was terrific but I'm a bit of a sucker for a good music biopic. :)
Only just got around to watching this and it is excellent. What a wonderful way to explore a life by concentrating on two pivotal 'moments' in their life. I love that the actors apparently didn't compare notes on what they would be doing but obviously made the most of their access to Brian himself because they are both so clearly playing the same man, just at different points. There's such a clear through line between them, even though neither of them really look like Brian or each other, you never question that this is the same guy's story. Loved it.
I've never really been a fan of The Beach Boys, however this film was amazing and I'm now searching out their music. Loved the film, the characters - brilliant ^_^
6 years ago I know but I hope you enjoyed the albums Today, Pet Sounds, Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, 20/20, Surfs Up, Sunflower and the mythical and well received Smile album.
Love & Mercy had a tragic reception. Myself, a longtime Beach Boys fan, overlooked it at the time. It’s quite possibly the finest example of how to make a biographical film.
paul dano should have been atleast nominated for an oscar .. he was truly incredible
I think this movie came out very well, I like how it shows us Brian falling into his mental problems and how Melinda pulls him back
He should've played Brian in the entire film.
I totally agree! Dano's performnce is probably the most beautiful and authentic acting I've ever personally seen!!

I cannot get over how good this film is! And I love it so much!
I just saw it! Absolutely phenomenal! Hope it's a hit at the Oscars

Just a fantastic film. Touching and Beautiful.
Straight Outta Compton - take note - THIS is how you do a biopic.
+James Curry Straight Outta Compton was really good actually. What did you want from it?
I guess the problem was that I didn't care. And once you take that away, the story isn't that great. In my opinion. Felt like hype over substance. But there you go..
Straight Outta Compton was fine. Now Bohemian Rhapsody needs to take note. A truly dreadful biopic that was
I watched this on the i-player today. I found it very emotional.
Saw it in the theaters, just saw it for the second time tonight. Beautiful, moves me all kinds of ways, I love Brian Wilson and I love the beach boys.
Does anyone know when "Bald and Talentless," the story about Mike Love's 60 year struggle to write a hit song, will be released?

I'm going to weigh-in and say that I want the in-studio video back as well. Must see Mark actually delivering his review.
***** They were in a different studio with no cameras for the last two weeks because of Wimbledon

Same for me! I had heard about Pet Sounds, never listened to it, but to see the amazing creative process in this biopic got me hooked on this record
People who don’t listen to the Beach Boys, or are only aware of their surfing/cars era, are really missing out.
Film of the year

Very good review Mark. A beautiful film
A perfect film. Glad you liked it.
Masterpiece
Great movie. Thanks for the review.
Cusack looks more like brian than you think ifyou look at pics from the 80s. he had lost a whole lot of weight under landy.
There are videos comparing L&M with historical footage and Dano also looks quite similar to Wilson.
Cusack was so unconvincing in this.
I thought quite the opposite haha. Why do you think he was unconvincing?
Thats just not true. He did a very fine job
Love and Mercy totally dismissed the lives of Carl and Dennis Wilson and their deaths which surely affected Brian.
He mentions the death of his brother Dennis. And Carl was still alive when the events depicted in the movie happened.
Yeah he mentions Dennis in the first major scene. The deleted scenes, available on TH-cam, have more about Dennis.
