  • One of the worst things you can do in self-defense is back up and keep backing up. Your average self-defense scenario most likely isn't going to happen on the mats with a cage behind you. It's going to be in the parking lot or in your living room. Backing up too much could cause you to trip or run into objects therefore placing you in a bad position. You need to know some basic movements to cut the angle and then immediately counter.

Quick Note: Honestly, it doesn't matter whether you go right or left after the initial combo. It mainly depends on if you slip after the last strike OR instead you step on the last strike and slip the other way into your pivot. Either way, both are fine IMO.
Also, feel free to do whatever counters you like. For self-defense you may want to throw more elbows, knees, etc. Just make sure your partner knows =).

This is so helpful to always remember to shuffle! That’s one of the things I feel like should be focused on a little more

Good to know that this still will work for people who aren't ambiturners, who can' turn left."

It feels like this should be so simple, just move to the sides not straight back... but for some reason it is so hard :p

Hey Louie, thanks for the feedback. So the first couple minutes we do show the pivot steps. That should help out. On the rollout it's essentially a shuffle. We'll try to hit better angles in the future 🤙.
