I'm 71 years old. I remember this song like it was earlier today.

The most important thing to remember is that this concert didn't happen on another planet or in another country. The audience is YOUR Grandmas, Grandpas, Moms and Dads.

I barely missed going into that war…luck of the draw… it’s fascinating looking back on this time, how organic the movement was..how,the generations differed and so on. I could bore anyone that bothers to read this with paragraphs about this time.
      But..

In World War II the average age of the combat soldier was 26... In Vietnam he was 19.

It was just County Joe McDonald, the band were held up in the massive traffic jams around Woodstock, so no Fish. Joe went on, on his own and created the most iconic moment of the festival.

One of the VERY BEST of the anti-war songs. Thank you.

A certain percentage of guys in that crowd would be drafted soon after this.

It was the anthem of a generation, but I guess you had to be there. The average age of the soldiers in Vietnma was nineteen.

I love it. I was born in '72 and I wish we had a powerful protest movement now. I don't know lots about Country Joe (and I think he was solo, without 'the Fish'). I highly recommend watching the videos of 1967 Monterey Pop fest!!

Joe was "Nam veteran, who disliked government war on American people. "Fire in the City" song about racism in America. We are old enough to see lawful racism in America. Joe also was Janis Joplin's boyfriend, sang about her in a few tunes. Barry Melton guitar player went on to be Judge. Seen Joe & Fish many times. Live his voice, the band sent chills, thoughts your body, mind.

One of my favorite acts from Woodstock 1969. Many protest songs from that time are great

I saw the Fish in Vancouver in 1968. They were the opening act for Tiny Tim but a lot of us left after Country Joe performed. Loved the Fish Cheer. Electric Music for the Mind and Body.

We had the draft back then. If a young man was called to fight in Vietnam and he didn’t report for duty, he would be arrested. So many young boys lived in fear of getting that summons. About 58,000 young Americans died over there for nothing.
The students had the right to be angry.

I just tear up when the whole crowd stands up and sings louder.....it's like the pages of history coming to life. Young people don't understand this because they did not live in the era and don't bother to read about it to understand how these events are linked to their own problems today so they can finally solve them. But nooooo... to say this is "one of those protest songs" is an incredible understatement for those who lived in the era and saw their friend's older brother come back from Vietnam in a pine box, for nothing, and got the shit beat out of them for carrying an anti war sign, or just having long hair, a peace sign on their short, and wearing bell bottoms. Or watch their peers in May 1970 at Kent State University get murdered and maimed by an idiot Ohio governor and his idiot national guard and show no remorse or justice. Well Shades of George Floyd and Parkland FL. History is only repeating itself in slightly different form today.

I realized the same thing myself after watching a 16 year old react to Alice's Restaurant. It had absolutely no impact on him at all. I finally realized that he had no idea of what it meant. It was just a funny song to him.

Check out their album Electric Music for the Mind and Body. A real flavour of 60's psychedelia. My daughter always called it "dads hippy s**t" but it has some great tunes and a real atmosphere

Well,we had four good decades of music,60s70s,80s,90s now it's all gone except for the classic bands that still tour, today's music isn't rock not sure what to call it but it ain't rock.

    • @laurakennedy9250

Couldn't agree with you more although I am a little sketchy about the '90's. When I think about that decade not much comes to mind. Well, at least we still have Springsteen and Patti Smith...but Petty was a terrible loss. Oh, and Neil Young of course, still here I mean!

Extremely divisive times. Those who served were the wrong people to hold accountable. But in fairness, do not forget about the My Lai Massacre. That did not make the American military look to good.

You are way to know anything about the 1960s and the Vietnam War. Every male that turned 18 was subjected to the draft, and sent to fight in that worthless war, whick killed 58,000 Young Americans before we were even old enough to vote of even legally drink. This song, CCR's "Fortunate Son", the Rolling Stones "Give Me Shelter" and " Paint it Black" and the Animals "I got to get out of this place" I consider some of of the best...JMW 1st Cav Division Vietnam 1970-71..age 19 when i was drafted and sent to fight in Nam....
