It's hard for people to 'care' about anything if they're not exposed to it, Paula. This movie got very little promotion, esp. in the U.S. as it wasn't expected to be a box office success, even after Columbia spent $70 million on it. So it's not the public's fault if they don't know something is out there. Also, how the hell do you know who does or doesn't remember it? Just myself alone, I know a number of people who remember and like or even love it.

@@kevinlakeman5043 Damn.. Why the attitude? I wasn't talking about the general public, but there are a looot of people out there who keep up with movie news and know what's coming out. Not even "movie people" talk about this movie, and that's a fact. Hope the rest of your day goes better! :)

The scene where they sing Dear Prudence always, always gets me. The Beatles wrote that song while they were studying meditation in India. While most of their group treated the trip like a vacation, Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence, was really into learning meditation and spent all her time either in class or in her room. The Beatles literally stood outside her room and sang this song to try to get her to come outside.

You’re so right about Hey Jude being melancholy!! Paul McCartney started writing it as a song for John Lennon’s son Julian because his parents had just split up (John left Julian’s mother Cynthia for Yoko). It definitely evolved from there into what it is now but the beginning of its roots was about something so sad.

  • @rickp209

The "slow-motion" singing is done by shooting at a higher frame rate, then bringing it back down to 24fps. If this was shot at 60fps, then the music playback is sped up to 250%, and that's what she rehearses to match the live-speed of the song. We recently just did the same thing for our movie (though much much much less dynamic than this lol!)

I saw this for the first time when it was on it's theatrical run in a small indie theater in Los Angeles and it absolutely blew me away. As a life long Beatles fan the idea of using the songs as the actual hook for a story was just brilliant. I recently rewatched this hoping it wouldn't be a case of rose-tinted glasses, but I was happy to find it held up very well. So glad to see it getting some attention after all these years.

This is the only musical I like at all, and I love it...it's not a bunch of Broadway show tunes, it's the Beatles, and I grew up hearing all these songs. Add to that the incredible visuals and the encapsulation of one of the most vibrant and tumultuous decades in living memory (if not mine,) and it's just an amazing ride from start to end. This was the only reaction to this film I found on TH-cam at all, so good on you for actually expanding that rather narrow range most online viewers seem to have.

I was raised listening to and loving the Beatles because of my dad, to the point that I had the Yellow Submarine album cover painted on my wall by my step mom, though I didn't know a good chunk of their later discography like my dad did. I was 14 when this came out, and we did see it in theater; my dad thoroughly delighted in every song and scene, and SKIPPED out of the theater. It was absolutely adorable. He's only done that one other time, after The Dark Knight. I enjoyed most of the music and plot but felt so uncomfortable with the tripping sequences until I watched the movie again around 25 yrs old. I listened to the soundtrack on repeat, which is different than the music in the movie, btw. Annoyed the shit out of me when I watched it after having memorized the way the songs sounded in the soundtrack. Anyway. This is the second video of yours I've watched and I was pleased to see it, so thanks. It's a special film. My fvourite covers from this movie are "I want to hold your hand and "if I fell" They change the tempo and the meaning so much when it's about love and a girl singing it. It just hits different.

Im so glad you did this reaction I was born in 1966 when The Beatles were getting very popular and I have been a huge fan since my father introduced them to me. My wife only knew The Beatles through me playing their music either if she was in ear shot at home or when we were in a car. I took her to see this movie when I came home from Afghanistan on leave even though she didnt think she would love it because it is a musical she ended up loving it and to this date it is one of her favorite soundtracks and is an great fan of The Beatles now! I love great musicals cant wait to see another of your musical reactions!

I saw this in the theater maybe 4 times, each with someone different because I HAD to show my friends and family this magical movie 😂 I loved all the arrangements and thought it was the most genius take on Beatles songs. I’m so glad you finally got to see it!

Now you just have to watch the 1964 Beatles film "A Hard Day's Night," which is superb (even according to the critics).

This movie is in my top 5 ever made. It's absolutely _brilliant._ I think my favorite visual from the entire film is the newspaper edges in the waves. I know it's not the most flashy, but I just love the creativity.

    Absolutely love this movie!
I had older sibblings, so I grew up on this music, and seeing it brought to life visually was everything I didn't know I needed!
It's sad to hear that it wasn't commercially successful despite the approval of the original composers.

If I had known more Beatles or been a fan before watching this movie, I may not have liked it like others say. I wasn't raised listening to the Beatles, so I found this movie a true delight and watched it several times.
I'm excited you're reacting to it! I love the actors and their voices. It's trippy and talks about hard topics from our history, but is also a love story, which always gets me.

Without a doubt music, really good music, amplifies everything. Hell, Let It Be can make me cry at the right moments, usually thinking of loved ones passed, just on it's own. But you pair it with how this movie did it....with the full on choir & learning it was a child's funeral & everything....you bet it makes me cry. I'm surprised you held it together as well as you did.
And yes, this is in my Holy Trilogy of Musicals with the Blues Brothers & South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.

I love this movie, it was a pretty big deal for some reason in my circle of friends when it came out (I was in high school). I rewatch it every few years and try to show it to new people each time. My favorite memory of this movie was watching it with my dad. My mom passed away in 2008 and around 2012 or so I showed this movie to my dad because he was a kid and teenager in the 60s so he loved that aspect of it. But at the end of the film when they’re singing “All You Need is Love” and it shows Jude and Lucy looking at each other I looked over and saw my dad crying. We didn’t often openly talk about my mom’s death and how it affected us both but when I saw that it broke my heart because his life partner was taken away from him so early. 😢💔
