My neighbor Santos was a coddled mommas boy. We used to call him baby Huey. Well, he was drafted and sent to Viet Nam, and came back a differentt person. Heavy drinker, violent temper. His mother would later say that her son died in Viet Nam and some other person came home.

My brother got 30 days leave just before going to Vietnam. He came into the house saying"hey kids(to his siblings) you gotta hear this". He had that album, that is the studio version which uses more instruments. When my mom heard the line "whoopee we're all going to die" she ran out of the room screaming in fear. For her husband, our dad, had been one of Darby's rangers and after four beachhead landings and numerous actions suffered a great loss at Cisterna Italy. Two battalions of Rangers were ambushed and wiped out in a 10 hour fight with the Germans. Only a handful of 900 men walked out that day. Dad was one of them . When my brother came home from Vietnam he told us to flee to Canada if we got called up and he would send us money to help. I'll never forget that.

I just cried when the crowd finally stood up to sing, all those men we lost, 58,000, all these kids wanted was to stop the meaningless carnage all around. While the government lied constantly.

I was there. Santana had dropped acid right before going on stage and needed some extra time. Joe was asked to sing a few songs without his band until Santana was ready. He sang a few and asked his band if he could sing this becuse he was running out of songs. He wasn't on the roster to sing solo. Well the moment he yelled,"Gimme an F" it was on. He was really surprised so many knew the song since it had been banned from radio and such. History in the making,

My fondest memory of this song happened in 1970. The school I was teaching at let kids play music over the loud speakers at lunch. They played this. When it came to the gimme an F etc. part... Those kids made it loud and clear they could spell!!! No more music on the speakers!!!

🇨🇦hello from Canada 🇨🇦! As anti war, peaceniks we sang this at our peace rally’s, anti war, anti USA & were ready to help out the young guys who came to Canada to resist the draft! I wonder how many of those young guys singing in the crowd were drafted & forced to go to that illegal, horrible war, how many came back and never were the same ?? How many did not come back Amazing what drugs booze etc did to calm the nerves of someone who never held a gun before! The ‘lucky’ ones not drafted were from rich families whose daddy’s got doctor notes to keep them safe at home, like 🤥 trump got out of the draft more than once!😡It was not a nice time in history except for our music 🎶 back then!
You should listen to Run Through The Jungle by CCR, another anti Vietnam song.

This is an iconic song! Love it! Have you seen the 60s with Julia Stiles? It’s focused on two families, one black and one white. From Civil Rights to the Vietnam War. Even Woodstock and did I mention the music is incredible all the way through? It came out in the 90s as a mini series but, it’s a movie on DVD now. Sooo good! You won’t be disappointed!

So a little bit of woodstock lore right here: Country Joe wasn't supposed to play until 1 or 2 days later, and in fact The Fish hadn't even arrived yet, but Joe had went there before the band, just to hear some of the other performances.
Now, I can't remember who were supposed to play right here, but they had just canceled. The next band up were Carlos Santana.
The issue was that Santana, in the belief that he wasn't up for another couple of hours, had just dropped some acid together with a few other band members. Just as it started to kick in the organiser came and said they had to get on, as the act before them had canceled.
So they were kind of short on time, as the crowd had sat there without music for quite some time, but at the same time some of them were to high to perform.
Which is when they bumped into Country Joe by accident. They asked him to entertain the crowd for a bit while they were getting ready. He said he could, but he didn't have a guitar, so they found a cheap Yamaha for him. He then said he really needed one with a strap, as he needed to stand up to sing properly. So somebody went and got the improvised strap you see in the video.
Shortly afterwards Santana got on and had a legendary performance, but he said afterwards he wasn't comfortable, as it felt like his guitar was like a snake trying to get away from him while he was trying to play it.
Sources: Interviews with Joe and Carlos.

Jefferson Airplane premiered their "revolution" song Volunters at Woodstock - the LP wasn't released until after the festival. That's another good one you should do.

Thanks for reacting to Country Joe. I would you listen to Bass String. It is one of the most psychedelic songs of the era. Listen closely, towards the end for very faint chant of “LSD.

I enjoyed your comments, when I was late teen, either the friend group was coming back, or not. then the other guys were bringing their selective vice numbers and trying to decide what to do. it was a different world back then. before and after 911I praised my young family members who joined.up. But being forced to go to war is wrong.

I use to listen to the song often in my youth. Never considered it psychedelic music; although Joe McDonald and Barry Melton did produce quite a bit of psychedelic music, I considered this song more Woody Guthrie.

And no better way to validate 10 years of government subsidized lunacy than by putting 58 thousand names on a wall...Back then when we wore the green, we signed out in 1970 at the administration building at Ft Benning...6 of us at a line in front of a warrant officer sitting at a desk...The guy at the desk getting his paperwork turned around to us and said "Holy shit...we're still breathin'"...I remember that like it was yesterday.

Some say not as good as the studio version. The story I heard was that his band got caught in the huge traffic jam on the way to the festival and so he went on stage alone. Iconic moment!
