I heard it aired live at the Glasgow Apollo around November 1981 during my first year at uni. Me and a pal, fans since we were 14, knew it was going to be timeless. I've now heard it live 18 times across 4 decades and a very changed lineup.
I worked out straight away the song was about heroin. I think that the BBC had got the measure of the Stranglers years earlier. If a song about drugs was a was good and ambiguous enough, it would get a pass. Same with other difficult subjects. the only change that had to be made to the Kinks' Lola, was the reference to a brand of cola. Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Relax, was allowed, but the video had to be re-edited.

But the information given is not accurate. This was not released at the time of all the other christmas-type hits. This was released after all that on 1st January and even later in March down in Australia where this bloke here is from. How could he get such a detail so wrong?

Floyd used to let the stranglers practice in the basement of his restaurant in the early days so they let Floyd use their music as a thank you. Peaches as the theme tune and waltz in black for the closing credits……allegedly!

Speaking as a man who had a heroin habit throughout the 1990s, still firmly chained to the Green Goddess that is methadone to this day, Golden Brown is the ultimate smack song, and I knew Hugh Cornwell had a habit. I am one who initially got into drugs for the romance, which I found in abundance. But heroin is both goddess and devil, and being a smack addict is a terrible life. But Golden Brown is a fantastic record.

The pharmacy l went to cd mix 'done down to 1ml.. l got my Dr to say l cd drop when I wanted... (on the script). I just took it slow mate, once l got down to 5ml I'd drop 1ml per drop... maybe 8-10 mths.. Just go at ur own rate, drop when you rekn ur ready. Dr told me methadone can still kick back 4 wks later, so he advised small drops in dosage, and definitely less than 50% than whatever ur on at the time. Best thing l did mate, 7yrs on hammer, then 10 on methadone.. it's fkn ridiculous!! Wish you the best of luck with it mate.. deffo go slowly.👍🏼
I got the Album “La folie” when it came out in 1981, so it was pretty obvious what the song was about. It got to number 2 in the charts. I wasn’t aware that it was ever “not played” on the radio. It was certainly the best track on the Album.

Also worthy of mention is the Stranglers single "Don't Bring Harry", which is also about a drug addiction, and also made it on to Top of the Pops in late 1979, so these lads have form when it comes to getting shots in under the radar.

The Dave Brubeck Golden Brown spoof is really well done. It's a fun version and the video is really well edited. Props to whoever did it, it's very convincing.
The band did have to fight to get this released, as said in the video. It was only released after the band exercised a clause in their contract 'Expressing the interest of the band' in having it released. This is why it was released at Christmas as the record label thought it would just be buried under the noise from the novelty Christmas tracks.
"There she goes" by the La's was also about heroin, as was "Just like honey" by The Jesus and Mary chain, also "Heroin" by the velvet underground which will surprise absolutely no-one.
It was kept off no 1 by The Jam's A Town Called Malice which was released in different versions in order to exploit The Jam's loyal fanbase, a fact that The Stranglers weren't happy about. I'm not sure that it stopped getting airplay.
Yeah, some of my info I got from the promotional blurb from their Australian tour which expressly mentioned gothic rock! Either they or their publicist came up with it. Defining genre's of music is a minefield because everyone's interpretation is different.
This song kept getting removed from TH-cam as well. But I think that was more down to a copyright dispute rather than everyone in the comments section all writing "This song is about Heroin, hurr durr!"

I remember the bass player moving to a village near me in Cambs, If i remember rightly he went missing for a while but was in Cambridgeshire.

The Stranglers were from Guilford, in the UK. They were great, but then many, many things were. :-)
They had an extremely succesful run of hit singles over a long period of time that many other bands/artists never got even close to.

The band did have to fight to get this released, as said in the video. It was only released after the band exercised a clause in their contract 'Expressing the interest of the band' in having it released. This is why it was released at Christmas as the record label thought it would just be buried under the noise from the novelty Christmas tracks.
It was not released at Christmas. It was released on January 1st, one the worst weeks for any record to be released.
"There she goes" by the La's was also about heroin, as was "Just like honey" by The Jesus and Mary chain, also "Heroin" by the velvet underground which will surprise absolutely no-one.

It was kept off no 1 by The Jam's A Town Called Malice which was released in different versions in order to exploit The Jam's loyal fanbase, a fact that The Stranglers weren't happy about. I'm not sure that it stopped getting airplay.

Yeah, some of my info I got from the promotional blurb from their Australian tour which expressly mentioned gothic rock! Either they or their publicist came up with it. Defining genre's of music is a minefield because everyone's interpretation is different.

This song kept getting removed from TH-cam as well. But I think that was more down to a copyright dispute rather than everyone in the comments section all writing "This song is about Heroin, hurr durr!"
