I am planning to start avocado farming but we have clay soil, Tropical/Subtropical zone in which temp ranges from -1c in winter for one week & 47c in summer, so plz guide me what should i do & how can i protect my plants from severe heat? Plz

Hey Nisar? Thank you so much for the compliment.
The first thing is to select avocado tree vaieties suitable for your location. Mexican and Guatemalan avocados are the best at tolerating the cold. Check with an agricultural officer in your region which one suits your are or may be there is a better variety than the two.
Second during winter you can protect the avocado trees by covering them with a frost blanket. Frost blankets can entirely wrap a small tree 0-3year old. The blankets are made specifically for insulating plants. Provides protection for about 3-4 degrees.
You can also cover with a shade made of wood, plastic, or nylon.
Make sure you leave room for air circulation but you can also remove them when its warm for effective air circulation.
      For heat,
      1. water when its too hot. Consider it like when you feel dry and thirsty, a refreshment makes it better. Water them to control the scorching sun.
      2. Mulch the roots. This will help to retain water longer despite the heat.
      3. Spray water under the tres canomy to control humidity. Depending on heat level, you can do so for 10-15 min
      4. Shade young trees with shade nets or shade cloth.
Clay is good for water retention but it prevents infiltration. Meaning your plants will be taking longer to absorb water. In that case make sure the soil is moist always but not waterlogged.
I wish you success and keep me updated on how it goes.

@@farmgrl Thanks alot for your guidance & better understanding. Actually in our country only in one place avocado plants planted many years ago & they dont know exactly about the varieties due to lack of knowledge about avocado.
our area temperature is about -1c to 46c & about 200-300 mm rains annually & rains mostly occurs from June to end of August.
As i watched in many youtube videos black color skin avocados are more sensetive to heat while green color skin are more tolerent to heat like Pinkerton, Reed etc is this true plz.
      Regards☺

What about in black cotton soils?

    • @farmgrl
      @farmgrl  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Volcanic soils are the most ideal. Nonetheless you can consider checking whether farmers in your areas with cotton soil have succeeded in the ventrue and how well then make a conclusion from that
