The best parts of this review were when you spoke about Martyr, the game is receiving a revamp, a kind of soft relaunch pretty soon, please consider reviewing it again then. Cheers.
I own it and I put maybe ten hours into it before something else stole my attention. I do wanna go back to it tho, it really felt like it had a lot of potential.
I wonder if the soft reboot is coming to ps4 at the same time?
Is there a lot of info on the soft relaunch?
@@Jesse__H it's coming to console 3 months later
@@demmybane Check out neocores Website. On the Forums they have a thread where you can see the new features and reworks
@@Jesse__H I think they are, at least I recall the word PS4 when they talked about a delay on the update. I finished the campaign but I will run another character, I liked the small bits of lore the game diched out and there are more of such event's after the campaign is done, and I didn't play through them at all.

Negative criticism? That's a risky move these days...
especially when you convey it in such an editorialised and cherry picked way of presenting evidence for your arguments. Look, I don't give a fuck about this game to be honest, but skillup would make a dreadful debater. He loves sidestepping around things that don'tsuit his contention. Let's stop this criticism is risky circlejerk btw, it's just cringe.

Only 22 min, should be called "a brief review" coming from you. Good work and always a pleasure to watch.
If you are interested in the Warhammer Fantasy universe, you should play Vermintide if you haven't already.
They have an expansion/DLC coming next month. Could be the occasion.
i am big noob on vermintide 2 if anyone wants to play and give me pointers. Tryna get good at veteran on the weekly event. But shits actually hard.
As always Ralph, your reviews are top tier quality, greatly appreciate the effort and attention to detail you put in! I never miss a skill up/laymen video!
Cheers mate
Skill Up, your review of InquisMartyr will need an update... there's gonna be a mega overhaul this month on the 20th (was supposed to release in May on the 28th). They're changing everything from the speed, to crafting, to progression, to re-adding co-op to the campaign.
Lots of info to absorb there. Keep an eye on it, we may be surprised.
Again GRIM DAWN & TITAN QUEST are so much better. I really think both of these games deserved your in-depth reviews especially the recent new arrival of big expansions for both games.
Grim dawn has its own issues just like PoE and D3. That being said this is like 50% of a finished game released way to early at an absurd AAA price.

I'm here just to thank you for the informative thumbnail, i knew this video would be worth my time.
I really want to see some Warhammer games from the baddie perspectives.
How about a stealth action game where you play as a skaven nightrunner? A proper action game as a dark elf witch (or 40k it and make it a dark eldar wych)? Maybe a RTS/Action (think Brutal Legend) Chaos warband simulator? Hell, why not a Battlefield 40k with IG vs. Orks? Swap one of those for Tau maybe?
Considering the line between heroes and villains is often blurry at best, especially in 40k, it seems odd that we've never gotten anything like this.
Man, what I wouldn't give for a game like that Space Marine from a few years ago, but where we play as one of the Thousand Sons!
warhammer fire warrior exist still for tau pov...it's bad
As for the confusion with magnus, I just wanna say that there are two different and distinct warhammer universes, Warhammer 40K is the sci-fi universe that “Martyr” takes place in, while “Chaosbane” is set in the Warhammer Fantasy (age of Sigmar? Idk) universe.
I'm just getting into Warhammer, and this explains so much. I want to play as a chonky space warrior (not specifically a Marine), and I was so confused starting Chaosbane and Vermintide. Not bad games, but not what I was looking for. Currently really enjoying Inquisitor: Martyr. Looking forward to Space Marine 2.
That voice acting...
I didn't know Mrs. Bucket was part of the 40K Universe.
Only Warhammer, not 40K. ;)
IT'S BOO KAY
Uh.... it's not 40k though
Apologies, I have no idea of the universe(s) :-)
@@Glokta09 40k is set in a futuristic setting, space marines, aliens, occult, tanks and mechanical weapons. Standard Warhammer is the typical high fantasy/lord of the rings type setting with elves, orcs, dwarves, rat and lizard people etc.
Ever been so utterly fascinated by a universe like that of Warhammer 40K but not so much so that you’re willing to put in the ungodly amount of time, that no one has, into actually doing a deep dive into that lore or play the table top game the lore’s based on; so you just listen to someone on TH-cam explain it some detail?
Yea me too. That’s why I’m super happy that more Warhammer 40k games are being made. It’s just unfortunate how scattered they are in terms of publishers that the quality of said games isn’t consistent and they don’t seem to sell well either. I wish Games Workshops would kinda set a standard as to what a Warhammer 40K game could be and should be. There’s SOOOO much rich and deep material within the 40K universe that quite ridiculous.
I hope one day we’ll get to play a Warhammer 40K game done in a style similar to God of War(2018) that focuses on the Horus Heresy. I think something like that could work.
I got a Chaosbane ad while watching this review. Sweet irony
Yep same
Fair review. My own personal take on this would be much more scathing and much more negative. Props to you for finding a way to articulate your thoughts without venting.
Now imagine CD Project Red handling a Warhammer license...
Why most you make me think of something so amazing
Holy shit...no...our lives would be over. Heck ,Cyberpunk will do that for us soon enough .
Meh, the gameplay of witcher 3 kind sucks
I would love to see a Sony Santa Monica game in the Warhammer franchise
This comment thread sure aged gracefully
Dang I was looking forward to getting this on sale. Ah well, thanks for saving us money, great review as usual.
If you really want to play a great warhammer fantasy game, I heavily recommend Total War warhammer 2
Agreed. Easily the best warhammer experiance
I would add Vermintide to that as well
You love ARPG's but no review of Grim Dawn?? How?
My Gaming Account i would play grim dawn over any of the warhammer arpg games
to be fair for the story aspect here... you do Know that Warhammer 40.000 and Warhammer Endtimes are not the same style of Story right ?
This isn't Endtimes, just Warhammer Fantasy. But yes, 40k and Fantasy are two different settings that just share a number of elements.
That elf legit sounds like a character from that animated lord of the rings film from the 70's at best, Zelda CDI games at worst.
Please GW just give THQ the rights to make a Space Marine sequel again.
The ip belong to relic and the 40k community has already ask and said it's not even in there minds
But make it totally different, because that game plays like balls. It's a chore, and is dated as hell.
Lesson learned, wait for skillup review before you buy a game.
Skill up: reviews a game
Fortuna and Sekiro: Am I a joke you?
Pfft, Fortuna?! Not worth a review, Skill Up is a busy man and needs to focus on the big games people are interested in.
Can someone tell me how the hell this channel has only that much subs ? Seriously
Great video mate , love and trust your reviews.
I love Warhammer Fantasy. I bought the game as a way of voting with my wallet. So far I'm not disappointed. It's fun. Could the lore and some other aspects of the game be improved? Sure, but I still find the game enjoyable despite the criticisms.
Great review, but I would like to see it be updated, the game has had over a year of updates and most all the complaints in the video have been fixed
We just need a 40K game based on any Dan Abnett book. Eisenhorn, Gaunts Ghost. Or if it’s Warhammer Gotrex and Felix. Anything else would be meh, imo
Solid review, keep up being legit, too many aint.
Once again another reason to always wait for reviews before dropping money on a game.
Really wish they would remaster/remake Champions of Norrath.
Ah, Champions of Norrath, the game that declared "5 Classes, 5 Races, 25 potential combinations of Race and Class" (when every race was fixed to a specific class)
I got an ad about half a second after your endgame title card showed up. Thought you just ended the video there. Made me laugh like an idiot.
The Total War franchise is the perfect example of getting the most out of the GW IP.
You have to remember @skill up, this is a company that binned its universe as one of the most successful total war games ever involving their own product got released and also used to think the video games they made were direct competition to the model sales.

Before this review even starts, I opened PS4 store on this game, and went to live streams. Looked like a poor man's Diablo 3. Janky, repetitive 3 enemy types for 2 whole missions/fetch quests, and and I'm like... 'nahhhh I'll be right' and exited.
That is all. Bummer.
Man, I was hoping for this title (Warhammer Fantasy is the perfect setting for a Diablo style aRPG) and I was considering buying it after I played more of PoE but good thing I didn't pre ordered it.
Speaking of which, I'm only preordering Death Stranding this year and can't wait for the Laymen and Shill Up reviews
Monetizing xp, money and loot drop boost in this type of game is disgusting. As a fan of the genre I thank you sincerely for the great, honest and comprehensive review. I will stay away from this garbage.
Give me NEGATIVE Truth - Anytime/Any Day - Over Sweet Lies - Easiest decision in my life.
That preorder booster crap squiks me out, no thank!
I feel like this game is getting far more hate than it deserves
It's more complex than Diablo but less complex than the needlessly obtuse Path of Exile. It's a nice middle ground
Skill Up would you possibly do a revisit of Martyr now that they have had some big patches and updates?
Good review! But why you don’t day ‘Hi’ when the video starts?
as i had to play the complete first act inside a sewer (yes just one, its not more than one map below and one map above ground) i knew i was in for a treat -.- thanks for the review and keep up the good work \o/

Glad you reviewed this. I've been on the fence and a lot of other reviews have glossed over any negatives. I just wanted both sides haha.
17:02 Sorry, you're incorrect here. Boss Rush is simply...fighting the boss. No mini-bosses, no other modifiers. Dunno why they included it, but it seems a good way to get Heroic tier gear once you have their patterns down.
20:38 There is no "fragment drop booster" and the bonuses you get are a piddling +5% towards Gold and XP. The in-game boosts you receive from the Collector's Guild are more than that at 10% and they're unlocked through more or less natural progression of the game long as you choose to use it instead of trashing your obsolete gear.
21:40 could you name some on the PS4? Because besides always online options of Path of Exile/Warhammer 40K Inquisitor Martyr and the years old Diablo 3 I can't think of many hack and slash/action RPGs on the console off the top of my head.
I literally just learned this even exists an hour ago when i got an ad for it. I assumed it wasn’t finished because it was entirely cinematic with no gameplay.
I think I know why now. -path of exile review? Something something Sekiro as well. Looking forward to seeing what documentary serves as the intro for a review of either of those games-
Diablo 2? FFS, even Diablo 1 runs circles around this cashgrab and it was released in 1996!
Let's not exaggerate
@@eval_is_evil Compare enemy types and the number of maps, you'll see I'm not exaggerating.
I like grim dawn.
I bought it recently and I have no regrets at all !
I love grim dawn.
I hear Grim Dawn picks up later, but for me the start is so slow. Ill have to give it another go at some point though.
@@ForbiddenCarrot it's okay but really you will figure out that later many builds are just unplayable at end game. Especially with all the changes they made to the game after the new expansion dropped.
Grim Dawn is probably the most well done ARPG out there. CRATE is amazing.
I swear you can hear this guys brother taking bong hits in the background
7 minutes in and I'm thinking great review. Thanks for your input, I was wondering about this game when I seen the cover.
So... for warhammer fantasy video games, the totalwar and vermintide sitll reign supreme? (totally diffrent genre tough)
Warcraft came from Warhammer? DAMM.
I guess that makes a lot of sense with the little I know about it.
Why is that character's voice so shrill? My ears
And Starcraft is ripped HEAVILY from 40k, TBH I can't blame Bliz for that both WH is a great series.
The first two Warcrafts were derivative AF. I had played Dune 2 at the time and was less than impressed by it. I'm not surprised that Blizz back then had considered licensing Warhammer. The current Warcraft story had to be retconned a couple of times because back then they didn't really know how to write one. They were a very small studio back then.
It didn't come from it so much as held it down and ripped its skin off. Warcraft and starcraft are both borderline plagiarism.
Blizzard at one time was partnered with Games Workshop to make a Warhammer RTS. Games Workshop decided to end the partnership ( Brilliant move lol ) and Blizzard instead of scrapping everything and doing something else decided to keep going renaming the game to Warcraft. TLDR version.
Im new to the arpg genre, i was looking forward to this game bc of the warhammer link. Instead of this what would the best game to start with? Id be playing online with 1 friend
Try path of exile man. It's free, and as an old school D2 veteran, it's a better sequel to Diablo 2 than Diablo 3 is. The skill tree in PoE is absolutely insane if you love trying to make new builds
Brad Knapp thank you! Is it micro transaction heavy?
@@Pajemmy fuck yes it is. You get constantly spammed by ads and the "buy something to remove monotony" is obnoxious and ever present.
Get D3 and/or Grim Dawn on sale. I don't know what kind of Stockholm Syndrome POE fans have. They all say the same thing and it's not true. It's boring, it looks like shit, the progression is un fun and leads to your end game goal being that after 100 hours you use roughly 2 skills and have pumped everything else about your gear into improving those 2 skills.
I tried to enjoy it because of all of its frothing acolytes, it has about 2 unique or neat ideas, but it is probably the worst of all the ARPGs I've played other than the Auction House version of D3.
Great review. Seems like a fun game if the price goes down or the content increases. I’m with you on the monetization... money should be spent on content not difficulty easement. It’s lazy and frustrating.
yep excellent review as always but i got it now (2 years later) on ps5 with the slayer edition. not only does it seems to fix some of the issues pointed out in the review, i actually take most anyway as positive being a casual only at both arpg and warhammer! but i totally understand how a genre fan would be disappointed. for me it’s fine the game is short and just fun to play once quick. and i prefer 40k so staying at the surface of the lore didn’t bother me.
I learned more about the Warhammer universe from the things the Heroes of Ubersreik said in the hub base in Vermintide 2 than all of this game.
Great review, you saved me from this one. I bought Slay the Spire instead. You should try that one!
What was the first game SkillUp played that got him into the Warhammer universe? I’d like to play it if it’s my kind of thing?
So what would be like your 5 recommended aRPG titles to play at the moment? Question goes to everyone else as well, feel free to answer. Since i am looking for stuff i could try out.
Here for that Grim Dawn shoutout.
About your confusion with magnus, you might have mixed up magnus the pious from warhammer fantasy with magnus the red from wh40k. The former seems to be a hero but also just a man (don't know much about him since I mainly play wh40k), while the latter is a traitor space marine primarch who then later turned into a daemon prince (and thus looks way more spectacular than magnus the pious). Since wh40k is more successful than its fantasy counterpart you'll usually get results for magnus the red which can be confusing. Just wanted to let you know in case your confusion stems from this misunderstanding. If not... welp, sorry for wasting your time :P
Fantastic review as always.
I'm a bit sad to hear this isn't so hot. I was really excited back when they announced this game since I thought the Warhammer Fantasy Universe would be amazing for the ARPG genre, but I guess the Devs as you say didn't pay enough attention to what else was done within the genre to make it stand out more. I hope they take some time to improve on the game or overhaul some aspects behind it, because it'd be a shame to let a Warhammer ARPG just die off.
Also from watching your footage, is it me, or do the characters look a little one note in their weapon choices/abilities? When I compare them to the kits your characters get in Vermintide 2, it looks a bit lackluster to be honest. The gameplay does look nice and smooth, but yeah I'm not seeing much in terms of variety here for experimentation. And that buff tree sounds a bit silly too cancelling things out.
Speaking of Warhammer ARPGs, I see some comments talking about Inquisitor Martyr getting a big rework. I'd be very interested in possibly seeing you cover that when it drops as I'm really hoping that game can improve upon its initial foundations too. Both Fantasy and 40k are ripe for a good ARPG, and I want to see at least one succeed on that front.
Listened to this while playing the new league on PoE...
Ahem.
Well, as a warhammer fan, I'm really disappointed :l
Keln, exactly my case, friend.
Play Vermintide, or Vermintide 2. Vastly better experiences.
I had a Chaosbane ad while watching this video. I habe to say, the trailer suggests the game is awesome. Who should i trust?
Look at other reviews, make a judgment from multiple sources. Skill Up is great, but he has his preferences and is open about it.
20:08 to add further injury to insult? I don't think that saying works in opposite order
I think I'll just stick to inquisitor.....
Why didn't I watch this video before buying the expensive edition of this game?
Delta Dart fukn rip
I liked it but can absolutely agree that by the time you getbout of the city the game drags on and on.
It shows an interesting part of the Warhammer Universe's story, the aftermath of Asavar Kull's invasion, which left the Empire, which had just come out of a civil war and the Vampire Wars, and it's been only used only by Mark of Chaos. But the lack of enemy variety is blegh. At least it's more than just a Khorne/Nurgle scuffle.
i never expected this game to do well. its in a market competing against diablo, path of exile grim dawn and other good indie arpgs. its price is just too high, 40 euro for 15 hours of mediocre content is really bad. if it had been 20 euro then i think its steam score wouldnt be at 45%
Skillup - as the Grim Dawn: Forgotten Gods expansion has just launched would love you see you do a retrospective review of this highly underated game that is still one of the best and long lasting ARPGs on the market...... 👍
Your reviews are good
Could you review grim dawn?, I think it's worth it
Definintely worth a look.
Martyrs gat a 2.0 updete and a stand alone ekspansion maby go tray that
Sorry for my bad english
I cannot argue with any of the criticisms you made throughout, however I will say that I very much enjoyed the game nonetheless.
I am a Warhammer fan, and you’re right in what you said with regards to a lacklustre story. For me it was more the “feel” of the environments that sold me on the game, if felt like I was in the Old World. The characters and locations within the game are key to Warhammer lore, however the game did them no justice whatsoever.
I played as the Slayer for my first play through, working through my second now with the wood elf. I found the Slayer a lot more enjoyable as I felt energy for him was a little more challenging to manage. I’m not sure about the most powerful skills, but I ran a ranged build on him which I found to be a lot of fun.
He throws his axes :)
Shacknews gave this game 9/10 and IGN 8.7/10. Jesus i almost payed money for it, thanks for the review
Another great review but dare I say... Sekiro
Idk if im tripping or not with this game. Bought it for $4 on GOG yesterday. Do the enemies not have names!? Like every other ARPG has the name of the unit you are attacking somewhere. Foes this game not? Are all enemies unnamed?
Damn....I was hoping this would be good, and like martyr. I’m glad I held off on it for a review.
7:08 Tree.exe has stopped working.
Hey Skill up,
are you still planing on doing your Division 2 part 2 review?
its sad how no game developes are able to deliver any good warhammer 40k game
Right? God, imagine if a Blizzard-helmed Warhammer game actually got made back then...what an awesome series that would have been
Especially when the original dawn of war painted a blueprint for everyone to go by
Spacemarine, vermintide 1and2, total war warhammer 1and 2, and dawn of war 1and, they are all great warhammer fantasy and warhammer 40k game that are fun and have large player bases, and if you don't like does check out the tabletop games
@@raptonsoul2557 i love all of them, in fact ive played all of the ones you listed, i guess what im trying to say is that maybe GW could have a little quality control or selectively pick game devs... because when a game dev make shitty games like this, it sort of sends the message that the warhammer universe is shit, but it trumps games in the same genre like for e.g. starcraft by a mile.. i mean that my opinion.
@@CrazyRetroJunkieI agree with that
While I would be up for Chaosbane, even without the proper representation and involvement of the lore, there's one thing that just screams at me (huge WH/WH40k fan + 20 Years a gamer now) "NO; DON'T!" and that's the locations used:
- ruined city
-sewers
- arctic/mountainous tundra/taiga
- demonic realm
This is the most standard couple of locations one could think of pretty much EVERYWHERE. This just screams: This is an uninspiered run of the mill game with no real effort towards any kind of heart or sould put into it.
I really think it was a design mistake to make this game in the plain Warhammer universe instead of Warhammer 40k. We already have dozens of ARPGs that are gothic/fantasy in nature. If we were running around as a Space Marine fighting Tyranids, Necrons, Eldar, Orks, etc. in a gothic sci-fi setting, the game would have at least looked unique.
as always, very informative, ty!
If i disagree with the review, do i report you to youtube then, or how does it work? Cause i only see a thumbs up and thumbs down buton but no "I disagree and want to report this person for not sharing the same idea's that i have thus must be demonitized" button.
That said, i like the game but the points are valid. I'm just in my 'i don't give a shit, it's brainless and i need that after a hard day of work" phase so i'm good with it.
The last good WH game was Total War... And Dawn of War 1&2 for WH40k. Space Marine was good, not really good. Vermintide, Deathwing - well, they are there, but almost dead considering playerbase. And now we get this... I don't know why GW gives out license to any company but the good one.
Gothic Armada is great if you like that form of game
Vermintide 2 is far from "almost dead".
EDIT: it's even getting an expansion-pack in August, centered around the Beastmen.
When are you going to make Poe review?
Martyr is so underrated.
wellp poe legion just started....
thats the way to go!
(btw ed contagion is da bestt!)
Ed trickster is going to be my second character. A -storm- armageddon brand inquisitor is my starter.
I find most 40k games look awesome at a glance everytime, but only about half of them end up being decent.
I know with all lore, characters, and events from either fantasy or 40k wheres that grand adventure like Witcher, Dragon Age, and such and to the team making Chaosbane were Warhammer fans I have to ask did they play and/or read any novels or just watch battle reports on youtube
i was so lazy, not only did this video saved me from 50 euros wasted, but it saved me from wasting my time pirating it to see if it's worth it. thumbs up \m/
So the classes map straight over to Diablo 3: Dwarf = Barbarian, Elf = Demon Hunter, Soldier = Crusader and Mage = ... Mage. It's the "At home" meme made into a game.
That's not how an asrai sounds...
Jesus christ. Just go play PoE. The new league just started, the melee overhauls are great, and it's free.
I knew this thing looked iffy from the start
No PoE :)
If i have to stop playing after every 10-30 minutes just to read wiki pages for 2h to get a rough understanding what just did happen (or not) … ;)
@@Katharating That's fair enough friend, but it does kinda sound like a you problem, rather than the game. It's not that complex
@@avalonazure5488 Ok, victim blaming. :)
That's fair - well, or _*not*_.
Nevertheless, one has to study, to read a lot, to 'just adopt a proven build or else…' …
There will be some time, where one will have sufficient basic knowledge bur until then there is alotta work and frustration.
Well, maybe a lot better if u have a friend who is more experienced and takes you by the hand, so that one is not that distracted all the time by all the new stuff. :)
@@Katharating okay, I'm not sure you understand the meaning of "victim blaming" but that's fine.
I really didn't find it that confusing. I'm sorry you did. It's not for everyone, certainly
Warhammer deserves so much more than what it actually gets in games and it's really sad. Yeah, it stole everything from Tolkien, but it also made some great characters and stories that rival it's more original (Come on, not that original, but what is post 1950?) 40K world. Warhammer Total War recently had some good elements, but it still failed to capture the strategy of the tabletop game and the importance of using Hammers (which hit hard but are fragile) and Anvils (which can hold up big units to allow Hammers to flank them) and instead just ran everyone straight at each other to see what happened.
For a second. I thought I had clicked a totalbiscuit video. Then I remembered. 😞
