Contests are never canon, and according to The Simpsons wikia Springfield is based on Springfield, Oregon. HOWEVER, Springfield is not IN Oregon.
Springfield doesn't seem to have a canon real life state, but all the evidence I've been thumbing through makes it obvious that The Simpsons live in a fictional state.

The thing is, even though yes after Season 10 there was a STEEP decline, after like Season 16 they actually starting getting funny again. If you check out stuff from just a few tears ago it’s great!

In the hispano american dubbing, in the Springfiel vs Shelbyville episode, they dubbed "ufo sightings" instead of "angel sightings", and I don't know why the hell is that way in the first place. How much English do our pity dubbers know? Maybe not that much. I mean, the meaning in the section is mantained, but the subtle oddity of Bart claiming that angels get sighted and the way he implies that is it good, just gets raped.

As a New Yorker, this is legit how I felt about New Jerseyans as a kid. lmao

I always believed Springfield is located in the midwest, south of north and south Dakota.This is because:
-Places like california and new york are shown very far away.
-When they go south of springfield, they reach very deep south looking places which implies they must live somewhere north of Louisiana, Texas, and the other southern states.
-The lemon tree would need to grow somewhere warm to be edible, so must be much farther south then in somewhere like Vermont, Oregon, Rhode island.
-In springfield the weather is most often bright and sunny, with many characters wearing shorts and short sleeve shirts all year round, so climate must be much more like south of us then in north.
-There are places like Springfield gorge, or mount springfield, which shows it must be north of the deep south where the land is very flat, and because when they go on vacation you see very midwest looking places.
-When the crossover episode with family guy happened, we know that the family from family guy went far south from Rhode island, and also west.
-It’s got a very inland look with lots of plains, farmland, forest, and even desert or scrubland.
-Jebediah Springfield is a very clearly american west explorer, and since it’s also mentioned he hunted bison where he founded the town, it must be somewhere east of the sierras and california/oregon, north of Texas.
