    The regulations surrounding selling anything poultry related turns many people off and I’m sure Big Agriculture has a lot to do with that

    I'm new to raising quail and I thank you for all the valuable information you give us. At what temperture do you set your frig. at? How long can you keep your eggs this way? Do you have to keep your eggs in a cooler to take to the trade day to sell, or bring back home if they don't sell?...and do you wash your eggs first? Thanks for all you help.

      This is just superb, I've been looking for "quail care" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (just google it ) ? It is a smashing one off product for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail minus the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my cousin got excellent results with it.

    Check your state laws. Florida for example makes you reach certain requirements to obtain a permit to sell eggs and or birds regardless of intended use. You can be fined giving them away if you accept a donation.

      I know it's an old post, but for newer people reading -
      Sometimes, when quail are born, they get really bad splayed legs. You need to have a non slippery surface for them, preferably even in the incubator and in the brooder, too. I use an ovation exo 56 incubator and there are ridged cardboard inserts you can buy to provide them this for grip. Not using something similar will likely increase the chances of it happening.
      If they don't fix their legs within first days it is likely permanent and a very debilitating situation. I euthanize the few that still get this way, but I have had one or two actually get better in those first 2 days. But after that window it seems they just seriously fail to thrive and are constantly run over by the healthier chicks and their toes picked at because they look like worms when they aren't hidden by being under the belly.
      You could in theory raise them separately but near the rest so they feel they aren't alone, but a wire wall between them until it's old enough to get any meat off it, but I wouldn't suggest that. For one, it's miserable and suffering, and two, it's likely to have tougher breast meat from scooting around. I've never done this though, it seems inhumane to prolong the suffering.

    The regulations on selling eggs is super dependent on state youre in. I started looking into it for Illinois and spent hours trying to figure it out and called a few places and never really got a solution.
    If i remember correctly, I don't raise enough for it to be worth the permits and inspections. Like, i just wanna sell eggs either as hatching or eating eggs as a very small side hustle and maybe earn enough to cover food, not make a business on it.
    If anyone knows how tf it works in illinois cause i still have no answer, lmao!
    Another rabbithole unanswered that took a lot of time was trying ro figure out how to even be allowed to have a small setup for the few you had, but it kept leading into questionaires about how much you can reliably produce on a medium-large scale. Keep in mind i was also trying to sort if i could sell lettuce. Why is it so hard to sort this shit, why can't i just call the one in charge and be like, hey can i show up when i got stock? I don't mind being in a smaller spot or side section

      You can get egg cartons from Matt Heidrick out of Texas. He's on Facebook or the CC Group page.

  • @RehoKevin

    Do those egg cartons hold jumbo eggs alright? I've seen some people comment on posts that their jumbo eggs ( 14g +/- ) wouldn't fit properly. Thanks in advance for your advice.

    • @CoturnixCorner
      @CoturnixCorner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cartons I linked in the description I no longer use. The cartons I use now come from Matt Heidrick of MmQuail farms in Dallas, Texas. I use the 24 count cartons which will hold 15 gram eggs as long as you place them towards the middle of the carton. You can find Matt on Facebook and his prices are very reasonable. Hope this helps and thanks for the comment!

    I don't approve, having quail inside with constant machinery white noise. It's not natural, the quality of the product is reflected by the quality of the quail. If you want to cut corners then why not do it with product that isn't living.

    • @h.s.6269
      @h.s.6269 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never liked the stacking quail cages. It is the same premise as battery cages for big ag, and I thought many people did this to get away from big ag and their cruelty.
      I think it's a trap many people fall into because they are trying to save on maintenance efforts of gathering eggs since they lay them everywhere. That as well as the fact they work so much better in urban areas because of size and people try and do as much as they can in the smallest of area. I don't despise the people doing this or anything I just disagree ethically. I also wouldn't have been able to start my own setup without having people like him to order eggs to start from, though I got mine from myshire.
      Freedom does seem to make the eggs tastier imo. But it makes gating eggs and cleaning much harder if you are in an urban environment without a lot of backyard space.
      I raise mine in basically an 8x10x2 area that has 2 hutches for shelter and full time access to the run. I give them veggie scraps, garden waste, and grow extras in garden specifically to feed to the birds. I also raise mealworms for them, which they go absolutely manic for every time.

      Dude those quail have a good life. They are inside and out of the heat? The wire isn't hurting their feet like you think it is. They have constant water availability. I'd say they are living 10 times better than they would in the wild. They have unlimited food I mean really. You think he should make them a miniature king size bed with a small refrigerator or something? So what they deal with "white noise" at least they aren't dealing with "hawks" or any predators.
