    Love the way your parents communicate during groceries. Exactly same as how my parents communicate with each other. My dad was a vegetarian chef for 25 years. And he always comment on the stuff that my mum picks. “Why you pick this?” “That’s better”... usually in the other families, the mother is the one has the says during groceries shopping... but not in my family

    OK I just want to say that this was a REALLY helpful video for a white lady who is recently getting into Chinese cooking. I have so many ingredients in my house that I bought to make 1 recipe and now I don't know how to use them for other dishes - that could be an idea for a video? Maybe like a trip to the grocery store with your parents talking about common ingredients that westerners might not be so familiar with and telling us how to use them etc.? They talked about the taro root and that was very helpful as I am not familiar with it! Anyway loved it, your parents are so cute and funny. My mom is very careful to check all the receipts as well must be a mom thing!! :)

    I love the gentle fun poking with the "show them" counter. ;)
    Sadly in the US, the organic labels are largely useless. Small farms that are working to raise their animals well aren't going to be able to pay for the certification and aren't able to supply the massive chain stores. Rather than looking for a sticker that is not properly managed, look for a local butcher or farm that can supply meat. Again, time, money, resources all contribute to the ability to do this as a consumer.

    • @MadeWithLau
      @MadeWithLau  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahaha yes I had fun with that as well. That's a great point, I should have made a note about that in the video as well to shop local and support smaller farms.

    Mommy and Daddy Lau are adorable in their matching outfits! They've got the senior "dress alike" thing down pat. Also, I love when your dad wants to teach you something he always addresses you as Son first. It's so cute. I wish we had big asian supermarkets like 99 Ranch and H-Mart where I live. The money I save there always gets negated by the gas I spend going there (the closest asian supermarket I have is 50-80 miles depending on which one I go to). I usually go to a small market here in town but there's not a lot of produce, refrigerated, or frozen product. It's more important to keep my smaller market open anyway, especially now, that way I don't have to drive 50 miles every time I need the basics. :)
    Looking forward to the fishball recipe! I love throwing a few in my soups. This video is really informative for when I can go back to buying fresh meat again.

      Yes they definitely need more of those around the world! We're grateful to be able to have more access to them. Or, hopefully in the next few years, it becomes more affordable to ship those types of groceries at longer distances. That's good though that you're supporting a small business, especially in these times!
      Excited to share our fishball recipe and others :) Thanks for all the love!

    ABC here: Chinese mentality is to buy meat with less fat but that’s where the flavor comes from. It’s a matter of what you plan on doing with it but ask any butcher or chef and they’ll go with meat with more marbling.

  • @maggiejetson7904
    @maggiejetson7904 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Papa Lau's definition of good meat is sort of the opposite of mainstream American for a good reason: hard-working muscle is tougher with less fat, but more flavors if you know how to tenderize it.

    Woo.. id avoid Costco meats. Their prices are insanely high. I'm no expert but I have worked as a meat cutter for plenty years now and you can get the same quality of meat somewhere else that'll cost at least 2 or 3 dollars less per pound.

    i'm never discouraged by water in the seafood packs. fish is always frozen, no matter what and always thawed at the store. if there's no water in the package, it means that its been on the shelf too long and is drying out. unless you live right by the dock when the fishing boats come in and buy it from them, chances are your fish has been farmed far away, sent to a processing center where they clean and fillet it, and freeze it. if they dont, by the time you get it, could be days or weeks depending on where its shipped from. it would be rotten if it wasnt frozen. the stores just thaw it out. for all other meat, dont forget that it's pumped with water to increase weight. this is how these places make a profit. thats why you see packages with a bit of water in it.

    Okay first of all. Love the videos and your parents. They are sharing all kind of knowledge and tricks which are really helpful. But i just want add some opinion/information on the "meat" portion of the video.
    The price differences. It's true that it's cheaper if you cut your own meat rather than buying the pre-slice and you also know exactly what cut of meat you are getting. But not all meat ( both the cut and the grade of the meat are equal). Like the pork the pork you got from Costco, it's the generic farm raised hence the flavor will be lackluster. While the expensive one that was in the black tray could be a heritage breed of pork and grow in nicer condition with better diet, hence will taste much better.

    • @MadeWithLau
      @MadeWithLau  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point Lam! Yes totally, you should consider the quality in addition to the price and then decide for yourself what meat you'd like best. Hopefully too you can find high quality and also save on price when possible 😊 Thanks so much for sharing your tip and also for the support!

    This video is SUPER helpful and there were a bunch of funny parts too! "Why are we going to two stores?" cracked me up at the very beginning because that was me asking that question every single time I get dragged grocery shopping with my parents for my whole life. I didn't know what the water was in meat packages so that was a huge revelation! I also realized there was NO way I was going to slice up all those filets and making my own fish balls so please thank your parents for showing us the precut and premade items at the store so I know what to look for at ranch 99. I have been really interesting in making my own hot pot using my cuisinart electric fondue pot which can heat up broth to boiling. I know you will show us how to make homemade hot pot broth, but do you have any favorite store bought pre-made broths that you like if you are short on time and uh, are lazy?

    Thank you so much for this video. Recently, about 5 days ago, I was just shopping at Costco with my friend who has membership and found that Cotsco has very good prices for meat and seafood, as well as cheese and fresh produce. I am considering to sign up for Costco membership. Are your parents consider freezing some of the meat they have purchased, or keep in the refrigerator until expiration date, meanwhile using as they need? I like to eat fresh meat and poultry and some time go as much as 5 days after expiration date, and it worked fine for me. Do I need to buy special knife if I want to prepare meat for hot pot? I use Aroma multi cooker for hot pot. And your parents are right. I buy bok choy, Chinese broccoli, spinach at Asian supermarket. But with fish at Asian supermarket I was skeptical. Now I see why. At my last visit at Costco I did notice that fish was looking fresh and reasonable priced. Thank you again for clarification.

    • @MadeWithLau
      @MadeWithLau  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! Costco is so great. They freeze meat quite often. I'm not sure if they froze meat for this particular recipe but there is certainly always a stockpile of frozen meat in their fridge.
