thank you so much for this one - please consider sharing a chili oil recipe and Chinese style sausage meat that can be preserved - the flavors of each is unique and definitely an adventure in taste and is a culinary staple that can be adapted for use in various dishes and meat preserving!
This was my husband's favourite soup growing up, his parents cooked the soup in the melon itself. I love the shopping tips on how to buy winter melon, I am the worst at picking vegetables. Thank you for another wonderful video.
Randy's parents are a reminder that those that are brave enough to immigrate to the US are a blessing to our nation. They not only bring with them a strong work ethic that helps them thrive but they also bring with them their culture which should always be treasured.
Amen. I went to live alone in south korea for two years... I did not pick up much korean on my own while busy working. I came back to san francisco and realized my parents had it 10x harder than me with ZERO internet help and raised three kids. they did a damn good job and they were much braver than I . mad respect to all immigrant parents
🙇🏻♂️ Thanks for saying that Brian & @thecook @justjoods for chiming in too. I'm in AWE of how much strength, resilience and determination my parents had in moving here, creating a whole new life, and raising my sister and I. I am so grateful that through these videos I get to share them with the world and hope that others see them as a blessing to our nation too ❤️
@@MadeWithLau Your videos both entertain and bring out "our better angels" which is rare today. Thank you for making them. As someone that's visited China a couple of times (while living in Viet Nam for a couple of years) I'm happy you're showing the English speaking audience something very beautiful. I personally feel the US would be much happier if we ate better and it doesn't get much better than what you're showing.
Cantonese food is the best Chinese food. You’re so lucky to have a Dad who cooks awesome Cantonese food. He’s a treasure and you’re wise to tap on his 50 years of cooking experience and honed culinary skills, not to forget preserving his secret recipes which will be his legacy to the family. Thank you for sharing them with us. Greetings from Singapore! 🇸🇬 👍🏻
Greeting to Singapore! Thank you so much for your kind comment. We are so grateful that you found our channel, and we can’t wait to continue sharing many more recipes with you! ❤️
@@tmeusorry bro but it is one of the best. The standard is quite high, that's why most recipes, no matter how simple they may look, takes serious skills to make. Take congee for example, Cantonese ppl are veeeery particular about it.
Another winning recipe! This soup is on par with banquet seafood soups. Daddy Lau does excellent job explaining his steps. Randy gives good translations. I always appreciate Mrs Lau’s information about culture. Thanks for helping all of us become better home cooks!
I am so glad I stumbled upon this channel, I was born in Hong Kong and grew up eating my grandparents' traditional Chinese dishes (Dim sum, steamed fish, chow mein, etc.). Watching all their recipes being recreated perfectly and explained in detail by your mom and dad brings me so much nostalgia. Genuinely, thank you for sharing this wonderful and delicious side of Chinese culture with the world, I cannot wait for more videos and for this channel to gain the recognition it deserves!!
Ahhh thank you for the love Justin! That really makes my day to read and makes it all the more worthwhile! Appreciate your support and excited to share more with you 😊
Thanks so much Lillian! It's an honor to do these videos and be able to capture not only the food, but also my parents stories and culture. So grateful to hear how much you are enjoying these videos too!
I just made this soup yesterday after watching this delicious and easy to follow youtube video. My father in law thought it was great 👍! I can tell you it's easy and impressive! Thanks for sharing.
I found your channel like 2 days ago and have already been through most of the videos you have recorded. I love the way your dad explains the cooking process and the way the videos are made. I can’t wait to see what you guys make next!

second time watching this winter melon soup video, and it always reminds me of my mama who did what your mother said: Cantonese always has soup on the table! watching your dad prepare the soup brought back sweet memories of my mama making winter melon soup [sigh] 😪 wishing she was still with us ... thank your dad and family for the videos.
This is better than any mukbang. I actually feel like I'm part of a family meal and part of the conversation. My surrogate parents teaching me stuff and telling me about their lives. Quarantine can get pretty lonely. Thanks for this.
This is awesome ! It's so nostalgic for me and nice to hear some cantonese as well ! Can't wait to make this soup soon. Thanks for sharing Randy's dad !! 唔 該 👨🏼🍳
I am an American Born Cantonese with family from Toi San and watching your videos warm my heart. I lost my grandma last year and have memories of growing winter melons with her in the yard. Somehow seeing your lovely family cook and eat together makes me feel closer to my grandparents even though they're gone. My favorite Cantonese dish growing up was dow see pai gwut, spare ribs with black bean sauce, can your dad make that? 🙂
Yay so happy you found our pai gwut video. We hope you are able to make this dish soon and feel like you are in the kitchen cooking with your grandparents. Thanks so much for watching. We hope each video fills you with warm memories of your family ❤️
That was my late mother's favorite soup. No seafood though. We would grow our own, propping melons up on upside down milk crates. After harvest we'd peel and cut up, pack in bags and freeze. When I was growing up, we would go to banquets in Chinatown and this soup was served frequently. You haven't lived till you've been thru one of those 12 course meals. Your dad is great and watching your folks reminds me of my parents.
That's so awesome to hear you have so many memories of your mom growing and cooking them too! We have milk crates in our yard too 😆 And YES those 12 course meals are so delicious and wonderful! So grateful to be able to share these videos with you JD.
Thanks for allowing us to listen to your family discussion. My Chinese ancestors came to Hawaii many generations ago and brought their wonderful food with them. Your parents remind of my "gung-gung and popo" (grandparents). Please continue the great content...Aloha.
My 婆婆 used to feed us 冬瓜汤 when we visited her for Christmas. I think once we did visit in summer and got to see all the winter melons growing in the backyard. My family is from Toisan as well. Thank you so much for making this video!
I'm 3rd gen Hakka. My great-grandfather came from Guangdong in 1903 to Honolulu where my grandmother was born; with all the different ethnicities in Hawai`i, I'm double hapa (Chinese, Portuguese, and Translucent). Many of you dishes are familiar that my grandmother and mother cooked. My mom died before I could get enough of the recipes but there are 1st cousins who still cook. Your dad is my surrogate uncle to teach me southern Chinese cooking.
I've watched "several" of these. What you're doing is an honorable task. Your father has to be a Good Man because he raised a Good Son. Thank you for doing this.
I am Cantonese and my grandfather’s village is also in Toisan. He came to Malaysia many years ago. He was a good cook too. I simply love winter melon soup cooked with pork ribs or chicken carcass with dried oysters. Can add kei chi too.
Also, the educational part at the end of each video is very informative too. Thank you so much for teaching the next generations. Uncle and Aunty is very knowledgeable👍👏
I've found some chinese melon at an asian supermarket here in Austria and made your dad's recipe - came out delicious. I had no chives, instead I added some ginger with the winter melon. Definitely will make this again and try out other of your recipes. Your whole family is so charming, but of course your dad is the absolute star.
Love your videos. Your dad's recipes are so good. Our family is Toisan too. Daddy Lau Cantonese descriptions and your English explanations are prefect combo. I also appreciate the research you do to provide extra info relating back to China. Your mom's explanations and stories are great too. Your videos will preserve recipes, culture, and history and good for all future generations! Thanks! The first one I made was the chow mein and my family loved it. My friends and I are enjoying your videos from Canada. Wishing you continued success.
Randy, these videos are a God-send!! I have been looking for videos where I can learn how to cook Cantonese food, practice the language, and reconnect with the culture--your video accomplishes all three. After my Cun cun passed away, a part of me has felt so sad that I didn't take advantage to learn from him while I could have. I deeply appreciate that you and your lovely family are making these videos!
Ahhh thank you for the love! That really makes my day to read and makes it all worthwhile! So glad you found our channel and get to learn and practice all of those things. Can't wait to keep sharing more with you 😊
The song your dad was playing in the flute is a classic. Very sad. Great recipe. I'm so used to only one way to make the soup. This "kang" is nice! Will try! Thank you for keeping your dads recipe and cooking alive! He's a treasure. Nice sharing of their youth.
Thank you for sharing these recipes. My grandparents are also from Toisan. These are dishes that I grew up on. Unfortunately these dishes will disappear in future generations as our kids assimilate more into western society so it’s great that you are keeping these recipes alive on record😊
I a so happy to see this video, especially when the chef spoke in Cantonese. Wonderful winter soup! Even better when the soup was made from a fresh homegrown wintermelon. Thank you for making this video, great information on how to make the soup. I am going to give it a try with my homegrown wintermelon. Great, informative video. Thank you again!
Winter melon soup (the thin broth version) is my favorite too. Like your mom, winter melon reminds me of my (fraternal) grandmother and my mom as well. My grandma used to grow them in her yard and spend hours boiling and watching the pot to making us her special soup. I love that you included the clip of the Toisan village. I’ve always imagined what my mom would describe about the house, and how they would cook. My family is from there as well and I would love to see more. I discovered your channel about a week ago and I’ve been hooked. I share them with my dad as well. Your videos are well made and the conversations around the dinner table is so personal and brings me such joy. I admire the research and time it takes for the production value of each video. It’s like the Chinese version of Alton Brown’s Good Eat’s with the educational tidbits. I look forward to new ones every week. Keep up the great work. Your family is amazing!
That's awesome that you have those memories similar to mom's. I'm so grateful that you found our channel and are enjoying all of the videos including the family time. Means a lot to be able to share with you and we can’t wait to continue sharing more ❤️
Absolutely 👌 delicious soup 😋! My favorite soup too! Uncle chef make family cooking easy! No other additives. Just simple basic and most of all NUTRIOUS wintermelon just like how my mom planted in her backyard😁
Winter melon is one of my favorite. Mr & Mrs Lau shared such valuable insights on it. Just love your channel Randy. Thank you so much...Cam Cam is so adorable...😀😀😀
That's 冬瓜盅, Wintermelon Pot, which is usually served as a fancy version of the thin soup with nicer ingredients like Chinese bacon and dried scallops, really great for cold season.
It's just like being home with my Dad cooking! I especially like the tag team effect of your Dad cooking and you adding extra information. Now that Daddy Lau has gone over cleaver sharpening and some grocery shopping, would your Dad do a video on the essential condiments in a Chinese kitchen? May I request a video for "meat cake" steamed chopped pork with water chests and Goji berries?
First,i need to say i love your video you shared to the world.❤️💐🌞 my husband prefer not to add seasome oil inside the soup. it will be much pure veg favour. ❤️Thanks for your viedo ,i love it
I am so happy that I found your channel. I loved my parents' winter melon seafood soup. Unfortunately, they both passed away before I got a chance to ask them to teach me how to make it. Been feeling a bit homesick and craving it lately, looking forward to making this.
I'm upset I JUST found this channel. I'm 2nd generation Chinese and LOVE Cantonese foods but the language barrier really prevented me. This is so good, not only to learn to cook dishes I grew up with, but also improve my Cantonese. Thank you and your family!!!
Tried this recipe the first time for our lunch today and it's a success! My family loves it. Thank you so much to your family! I have some left overs, add a little bit more seafoods and thicken it a bit more then pour it on top of steamed egg and tofu and this becomes another meal! Equally delicious!
Oh that sounds delicious as a second meal! Thanks so much for trying out this recipe N. W.! We are so happy to hear that it was a success and the family loved it! Please say hi to everyone from us ❤️
Your comments about the health benefits of the melon remind me of my Persian mom's comments about "hot" and "cold" effects of foods on the body. Melons were definitely cooling foods, and would balance the effects of hot foods like nuts. She would also say that eating too many hot type foods would contribute to zits! Cool that similar philosophies exist in so many cultures.
Greetings from Singapore! Found your channel recently and am such a big fan of daddy lau. Wondering if you could also do a vegetarian series (preferably w/o onion and garlic) or perhaps add tips on how vegetarian can adapt and tweak whatever you are cooking to still enjoy the same. Looking forward! Tks again for generously sharing your dad's recipe and I really enjoy the stories that came with it. Love from Sg!
Nay ho ma? My name is Rob and I just want to say, I love your dad and mom! My parents were from Tosain Villiage too. Your parents remind me so much of my own!! (They passed away awhile back.) The food your dad cooks remind me of my dad's cooking which I miss dearly. Thanks to your dad I can re-create them and enjoy the memories. I know your parents speak cantonese, but do they speak Tosain? My parents spoke only Tosain. Hardly any English. I have saved all your dad's cooking episodes! I hope many more to come. I wish you and your family good fortunes and health!!
Talk about serendipity, a week after watching this video my neighbor gifted me with half a home grown winter melon. Made this recipe with chicken and mushroom substitutes, absolutely delish!
Another great recipe and video! I’m craving winter melon soup now 🤗 Like I always say, I learn so much from every video. (I didn’t know the significance behind the name and white winter snow 😱) I so deeply appreciate your parents sharing their recipes and stories with us. And your mom is so right - Cantonese people make good soups and always have it with every meal 💜☺️
Thanks so much CJ! Super grateful for your support with watching another video. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one too. Hope you are able to pick up a winter melon soon to make this one 😋🙌
Hi Randy! Daddy Lau scores another great recipe. My mom used to grow her own winter melon in her garden as well. This recipe looks so good- I’m going to make it for my grandkids! What other veggies do your parents grow. My mom grew green beans, ong choy, bak choy, Chinese long beans, eggplants, chili peppers- anything that would feed us. Loved seeing Cam tasting the soup!
Oh wow that's amazing that your mom was able to grow so many things Betty! I'll need to ask dad what he's currently growing. Off the top of my head I know he's growing sweet potato greens, peppers, tomato and oranges. I think we'll want to do a garden tour at some point on the channel! Can't wait for you to make this for your grandkids. We hope they love it!
My favorite soup to order in a restaurant! Thank you for the recipe! Plain wintermelon soup with nothing added is also one of the most comforting and healing soups to drink. Note to self: buy more cornstarch! Ever since I started making Daddy Lau's recipes, I have been using a lot more corn starch and less flour for cooking and I love it.
Haha right?! We've gone through more cornstarch in the past few months than we ever did in years. Never realized how much my dad used it! Agree plain winter melon soup is also soooo comforting. One of my favorites.
Love watching your videos. Always so informative. Perfect for people who don’t know how to shop for the ingredients. Now I’ll know how to select a nice 冬瓜 the next time I need one. Thank you!
Try thee soup with some added Chinese dried scallop or fresh scallop. Try steaming it for few hours with the inside filled with your favorite meats and fill it with chicken stock. You must remove the seeds. Adding dried scallops makes it taste amazing.
In Malaysia people only make this during Winter Solstice ( even though there’s no Winter in Malaysia) but my grandmother came from China so she diligently observe the festival 冬节 in Malaysia it rains a lot at the end of the year ( November December) so it’s « cooler » prefect for Winter Melon Soup
Stumbled on your channel and finally someone posting great videos of home dishes my family made when I was growing up. Awesome videos! Does your family have a recipe for curries? And also what wok is your father is using?
Great videos!! I really enjoyed your dad's demonstrations/explanations and how your family talks about the past while enjoying the food. Love the mix of canto and english in the videos..its like how my family conversations are. Possible to share recipes/videos on Cantonese slow-cooked soup "lo foh tong" (老火湯) that are usually just made at home (with the chinese herbs 药材)? As a 1st generation ABC myself, I feel like these soup recipes may become lost over time..and we usually won't find these soups on restaurant menus. When I went away for college, I had missed my mom's soup the most.
We'd love to do that recipe! I'll add to our list. We definitely want to make sure we do more of these herbal soups because agree I feel like these delicious soups could become lost over time. Thanks so much for watching Mimi. So happy to hear you are enjoying our videos ❤️

Thanks so much pongster888! Grateful to have your support ❤️
A few years ago, I went to a hot pot restaurant in Guangzhou where they used hollowed out winter melons for the pot. It was pretty good.
Fancy
Nice!
Awesome! That sounds great 😋❤️
That's 冬瓜盅, Wintermelon Pot, which is usually served as a fancy version of the thin soup with nicer ingredients like Chinese bacon and dried scallops, really great for cold season.
Daddy Lau is AMAZIIING 👏👏👏
Your dad should be teaching a class, not just on TH-cam, that would be fun. However, your videos and instructions on your blog are amazingly detailed.
Thank you so much Caroline! We really appreciate your support! 🥰🙌
成個酒樓大廚搬番屋企好幸福! 仲做記錄傳承大家添!
多謝劉叔叔
吾駛客氣,好多謝您嘅支持!老劉祝您平安吉祥!生活愉快!
Looks so good 😍 Thank you for the recipe Uncle Lau!
🙇🏻♂️❤️ Grateful to be able to share with you!
My grandmother made this all the time. I remember growing having a fresh pot of soup everyday rain or shine, hot or cold 😋😋😋😋
First,i need to say i love your video you shared to the world.❤️💐🌞
my husband prefer not to add seasome oil inside the soup. it will be much pure veg favour.
❤️Thanks for your viedo ,i love it
Chef Lau, thank you so much for sharing the wonderful recipe..................
🙇🏻♂️❤️🙌
Wow! Papa Lau, you are not only a great cook but also great in gardening👍👏. Any tips how to grow winter melon? It's one of my favorites 😊!
i could watch him tasting the soup all day.
Love this recipe! So simple, yet delicious!
I am so happy that I found your channel. I loved my parents' winter melon seafood soup. Unfortunately, they both passed away before I got a chance to ask them to teach me how to make it. Been feeling a bit homesick and craving it lately, looking forward to making this.
Wow! Its typical cantonese dish. My favourite.😋🤤. Thanks for showing us.
🙇🏻♂️🙌❤️ Thanks for watching! Hope you are able to make and enjoy soon!
Looking good....nice on a cold day!😋😋
I'm upset I JUST found this channel.
I love Cantonese so much!!!!! Very delicious soup and feels like home ❤️
🥰🥰🥰
Oh wow that is serendipitous! So glad you were able to make this recipe Goh J-Ee!
Love cold winter melon drinks to fight that heat in the middle of the day.
I am Happy to see Cam can eat now ,,😝he love the soup ,,lucky baby ,,lucky family ,,God bless all òf you & ofcourse THANKS To Lau Bá ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hehe he is so happy to get to eat now!
I think this is the first time we see Cam eating the grown ups’ food? And how he stares at mom when he says mamama. So cute!
Makes our heart melt 🥰🥰 Yes I think this is the first time he's been able to eat on camera! He LOVES grandpa's food 😂
Love your parents so much! Brings me back, for sure :) please keep posting, this is gonna be a super successful channel!
Love watching your videos. Always so informative. Perfect for people who don’t know how to shop for the ingredients. Now I’ll know how to select a nice 冬瓜 the next time I need one. Thank you!
Amazing! We are so happy to hear that Rucky. Can't wait for you to try out this recipe 🙇🏻♂️
Looks delicious!! I love the recipe with the ashgourd. I raised some last year and will do some this year. Love your recipes!
Try thee soup with some added Chinese dried scallop or fresh scallop. Try steaming it for few hours with the inside filled with your favorite meats and fill it with chicken stock. You must remove the seeds. Adding dried scallops makes it taste amazing.
I enjoy watching your video's and learn more to cook.
Thank you so much Flaviana! We are so grateful you found us!
Great! Thanks Uncle Lau
Thank you!
I've never seen the winter melon in my country but the recipe looks so delicious.
In Malaysia people only make this during Winter Solstice ( even though there’s no Winter in Malaysia) but my grandmother came from China so she diligently observe the festival 冬节 in Malaysia it rains a lot at the end of the year ( November December) so it’s « cooler » prefect for Winter Melon Soup
really fun to watch these videos. really appreciate the family stories and extra information on Kanji. mamamamama!!!
So grateful to hear that Julie! Thanks so much for watching and we can't wait to keep sharing more!
i like that it gives a homey and relaxed feel, i learn not only about how to cook the dish but also about the ingredients and experiences 🙂🙂
So happy to hear that Marie! We are so grateful you found our channel and that we are able to share with you!
Stumbled on your channel and finally someone posting great videos of home dishes my family made when I was growing up. Awesome videos! Does your family have a recipe for curries? And also what wok is your father is using?
My grandma usually grates ash gourd and mixes with curd/yoghurt and we eat it as salad. I love it.
Ohhh that's awesome! We need to try that 🙌
wonderful recipe, thanking for sharing! the baby is cute AF! =)
that soup and noodles look so delicious! reminds me of my house. my dad hides a lot of winter melon in the garage or in his cook house lol
Haha that's awesome! I wonder how many parents have stashes of winter melons in their garage like our families do 😂
Man i love you channel I can’t wait to share these recipes with my family.
No doubt Cantonese people make perfect soup
🥰❤️
Thanks for sharing this dish! Love it! Will definitely need to try this soup dish!! Awesome bowl catch from momma! @12:28 Haha!
Haha quick hands! Thanks so much for watching and giving us love. We can't wait for you to try in the future!
I've seen a recipe of a soup cooked in the winter melon. Have you done this before? I would be curious on how to do it this way. Thanks Chef
You guys are the cutest! Love your shows! Thank you again! Gonna make this next.
Thanks so much for the love Ed! Can't wait for you to make this one soon 😋
I love this channel 😍
The way he compliments his own cooking while he's cooking reminds me so much of my own Cantonese dad lol
Plan to make this during Easter holiday 🐣😻🤌🏼Baby Cam Cam babbling is soooo cute🥰♥️
Oh yay! We can't wait to hear how it turns out Pei Wen! Hehe and yes we are soooo excited he's babbling now. Makes us so happy to hear.
@@MadeWithLau FYI, I’m the one who ask about winter melon soup in the Zoom meeting😹🙌🏻🍈
@@LydiaK2101 ohhhh awesome! 🙌
This!!! This is my comfort food, my go to during cold flu season. Great tips on how to buy winter melon, I needed that!
🥳🥳🥳 Yay! We hope you are able to make this (but not too soon since we don't want you to get sick ❤️)
