"Mr. Earl" Carroll was a huge '50s Rock & Roll star - yet, later as a school janitor in NYC - he NEVER said, "Do you know how famous I used to be?". He showered LOVE on all "his kids" at PS-87. God blessed him with continued success as a top performer on the Oldies Circuit - yet, he remained a beautiful human being, who never let fame go to his head. He stayed true to his love for his kids at PS 87. Bless you, Speedo!
Damn he was my janitor at ps.87 when I was in like 5th grade now I'm in college and I'm never gunna get the chance to go back to the school and say what's up to him rip mr earl!!! Thank you for making beautiful music and keeping the school clean and safe for us
I was born in Arica Chile 1959.. 54 years old guy now..Tears are falling from my eyes.. memories come from my hometown.. The radio used to play those songs.. I was maybe 10 years old at that time..Black musicians were so magnificent talented people..Cadillacs !!!!
The real deal here! Even in their later incarnations, the Cadillacs were spot on perfect! No vocal gymnastics, but great singing and performing! Doowop generations, take some lessons from these guys!
Which two people could not like this? this is by far better then any nightclub atmosphere these guys were tremendous. Real healthy positive energy superb!
omg this is the first i have heard that the great Earl Speedoo has passed, RIP Buddy, i will miss you....loved all that you have done..and your show goes on.
And the 'fast talkin', sharp dressin' ... fast stepping, fancy dressin', Cadillacs!' I like your 'fast talkin', fast walkin', too! Awesome goup, and awesome Earl who sing ballads and jump tunes. RIP, Earl & Bobby (Phillips)
Originally the "CADILLACS" came together as a group in early 1953, as the "CARNATIONS." Hailing from Harlem, NYC, (with the help of manager Esther Navarro) Earl Carroll along with J.R. Bailey and the Cadillacs (vocal group Hall of Fame 2004) went on to record some true "Classic Do-Wopp" records in the 1950s, on the JOSIE record label. Their classic song (done by so many groups over the years) "Gloria" and "Wonder Why" were recorded in 1954. I personally love "Zoom" and "The Girl I Love." In 1955, their most notorious record "Speedo" was released, bringing a large white teenage audience to black rock and roll do-wopp music. In 1959, the Cadillacs were featured in the movie "Go Johnny Go." Despite many line-up changes over the years, the Cadillacs have always been considered a premiere true original do-wopp group, from 1950s NYC. They have always entertained us and were truly loved and embraced in the NY Metro area. Their songs were constantly played on the old "WCBSFM 101.1 FM NYC" radio station. (this was NYC's oldie's station of the past) Earl Carroll was a gentlemen and will be missed by many. He is a true part of 1950s America and will never be forgotten. RIP Earl and J.R. I thank you and the Cadillacs for all the great music and memories you have given us over the years....rock on....
This is amazing, Im mid 30's but my parents and their parents were playing this when I was a lil boy.. on vinyl still on their old record player. This is timeless.
Earl Carroll died on November 25, 2012 in NYC a few weeks after celebrating his 75th birthday. He had been in a rehab-nursing home for about 2 years after suffering a stroke and battling diabetes among other medical ailments.
These guys were still absolutely KILLING IT in their older years, rest in peace to an under appreciated legend of rock and roll and one of the kings of doo wop, Mr. Earl Speedo Carroll you will never be replaced. And rest in peace to the other members of this marvelous group we have lost! Gone but not forgotten.
RIP Earl Carroll. Just saw you on TV the other day, in a Doo Wop show. You are going to be terribly missed, sir. Me and my buds always sought out the perfect place in the High School, to make the best echo chamber, to croon. Kids today surley will never know what they missed. Peace!
RIP, God Bless and, yes, Good Nite, Mr. Earl "Speedo" Carroll. Real Deal Lead Singer & Showman. Great group and this vid proves it. And Earl singing "Gloria" with great Cadillac backing - wow!
The first two performances of 'Speedoo' & 'Gloria' were on the Clint Holmes' 'NY at Night' show that aired between 1987-88 while the last two performances herein are of Earl & the Cadillacs a few years later on the Harvey Holiday Doo Wop Show which also had Jocko Henderson introducing the Cadillacs as they sang 'Peek-A-Boo' and 'The Girl I Love' with Earl's hair being just a little greyer than in the first two performances!
I WAS ONLY A YOUNG KID WHEN THIS GROUP CAME OUT. BUT MY OLDER COUSIN"S WERE IN THEIR TEEN"S SO I GREW UP LISTENING TO THEIR MUSIC.THE EARLY 50"S.GREAT SONG"S.
Mr. Earl Carroll - as great an entertainer in the 1950s as Michael Jackson was in his generation. A more humble human being you're not likely to find. Earl, Heaven is digging you now.
A truly Great R&B group.... and Gloria is in my Top 10 songs... I played it in the First Month it was released... OH those Brooklyn Candy-Soda stores-hangouts :)
Back in the 1950's, the Cadillacs were one of the hottest dancing & singing vocal groups in NYC. Others were The Valentines w/Richard Barrett who could dance their asses off on stage, and the Chicago group, The Flamingos, who could capture an audience's respect and love by dancing up a storm such as what they do on 'Jump Children'! And let's not forget the fabulous Bluenotes of the 1950's who could tear the place up with their dance moves! However, Earl & the Cadillacs were the very best!

I LOVE me some Earl Carroll. But does anyone know who's in this lineup ? I know that's the Bob Phillips (far right/tenor), but who is the brother singing bass and the tall brother in the middle ? Speedo continued with this lineup on the PBS Doo Wop specials (the 4 of them ) then we lost Bob Phillips 2011 -. And the group continued as a trio.
Bobby Phillips Is the short guy singing bass, Gary Lewis Is the Tall Baritone, And Johnny Brown Is The Tenor. Johnny passed In 2004. Gary Lewis Is Still Alive
Probably so..you have to remember that many of those early groups didn't make millions like the groups of today, so when their careers were over, they had to get regular jobs to survive. I would have been nice if today's entertainers would have taken better care of these legends but.....
Goes to show how the movie/ Hollywood likes to cast fair skin actors instead of the actual skin tone. The guy who played Speedo was so light skinned in the temptations, I thought my television was messing up.

Beautiful story ❤
This is my favorite song by them

You know, I'm almost 73 and when I listen to these beautiful sounds of love, I just can't stop the tears. It was so beautiful.
Love the old times.....
Yes Corky
ME TOO
Nobody, and I mean NOBODY can deny that we had the GREATEST music of all time!
I know I can deny!!!! I loose because it was/is the best music. I'm 61 now and love this music since I was about 14 or 15 years old. 🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊

This is vocal ability at the absolute highest level.
I love doo wop, but these dudes seemed to be a cut above.
The lead on Gloria is transcendental.
These brothers were killing it! Where would America be without our music?
Very true - much diminished !
Our music???? Whatcha mean?🤬👀👀👀👀👀
I remember being on on stage with this legendary group and taking some advise from Mr Earl (Speedo). R.I.P. Big Brother, and thank you.
The real deal here! Even in their later incarnations, the Cadillacs were spot on perfect! No vocal gymnastics, but great singing and performing! Doowop generations, take some lessons from these guys!
One of the great performing character & showmanship groups of the 50's.
I don't know about the vocal gymnastics...the lead got pretty loose singing Gloria. He's got skills.
For me The Cadillacs were a super group. The variety and quality of their music and sound is amazing.
RIP Mr. Earl youwill be missed!!!
Which two people could not like this? this is by far better then any nightclub atmosphere these guys were tremendous. Real healthy positive energy superb!

Gave me goosebumps & hard nipples! Discovered this song at age 8 back in the '50's. Love it still. R.I.P. SPEEDO
Speedo.
We’re the audience, doing our part. But wouldn’t it be something to be able to participate on the other side of the apron…

it was not about the money but the passion these folks were the Anointed ones
11 thumbs down? how could ya? 🎩
I wish the band would be a little bit quieter for the background singers honestly
Got a kick out of this kid at 10:09 trying to find the beat.
