There was a blind student in one of my classes and the teacher would always talk to him very loudly, until one day he said, "I'm not deaf, I can actually hear much better than you can."

After watching this video, I feel so grateful that I can see and hear.
Edit: why are people calling me rude? this video made me realize that i take basic human functions for granted and i’m honestly suprised i don’t see more of these comments on videos. i mean seriously. both a deaf person and a blind person in the same video and you don’t even think once to yourself: “Man.. i’m so blessed that i can see and hear” ?
edit number 2 since i forgot we’re in 2020 and people get hurt over everything: literally all i was saying is I, Christopher am grateful that i can both see and hear

Some are. I assume it depends on the extent of hearing loss and the amount of time they have been deaf. Someone that has been completely deaf since birth will not be able to speak (assuming they don’t have hearing aids)
I was watching a documentary about a catholic school for deaf children active in the 1960s, and one of the students interview (now an adult) mentioned how many of his fellow students were actually illiterate or only semi-literate in written English. Back then many were only taught, and only communicated in, ASL

I read her lips and I can speak so I can describe and talk back. She was born blind, I went deaf. It's even funnier with our kids.
Her son will tell me something In the car but he sits behind me. Blind sister rides up front passenger I'm middle kids in back. So she will turn around to face the general direction I'm in and repeat what was said. Then I can reply.
Her son will start talking about trucks or some things just out of the blue like kids do. So I describe what he is doing what we are seeing.

My ASL teacher, who is Deaf and totally brilliant, says that deaf people think visually. They don't think in English, but will think in images, like a movie. Deaf people are not any less intelligent than hearing people. I mean come on, they can learn to speak English without being able to hear it! You might not know it, but ASL is a naturally formed language just as complex as English. It's easier for deaf people to understand sign languages because they are visual, 3D languages and very expressive. Children can also start to sign earlier than they can start speaking--as early as a couple months old instead of years. Some hearing people do also think more visually than verbally. This is common in autistic people, artists, and engineers.

Tommy made me see a whole new perspective about disability.
Because of him I learned that a disability isnt something that makes you less than the other. Well technically or physically yes I guess but having a disability is not becoming a less version of you but instead gain more than what you could've.
Our human body learns to adapt and disabilities opens new path ways and perspective to cope up with what is missing from us therefore making you technically "gain something than lose something".
They see the world in a different way, they live the world in a different way but I dont think that makes them less than the other
For all those people with disability, stay strong and be proud. For those who are blind, deaf, mentally challenged and all with other disabilities... YOU ALL DESERVES TO GET THE BEST OUT OF THE WORLD AND LIFE!

Thank you, I'm not deaf or blind but I do have a disability. I recently have been diagnosed with epilepsy and its been better since I officially was diagnosed, because I was actually put on medicine to help me with it, but it is a big challenge because Im not completely sure what causes or triggers my seizures. Its not what everybody instantly thinks of, which is flashhing lights. I can watch what ever movies or videos and be fine (my EEGs both came back normal) but sometimes I just randomly start having auras and I its like I go into slow motion like I'm on auto pilot trying to tell myself what to do from the very back of my mind. Its taken me alot of time you even be able to warn the people around me because I have had to learn the signs from the inside and let people know on the outside. Though it's helped me understand the signs of my seizures a lot better.

I have a friend that is fully deaf from birth. My vision depends on the day, but generally it isn't much.
We have kind of created our own tactile ASL where my hands cover hers, unlike how Rikki had her hand out flat. I can then sign back to her and she knows what I said because she can see. On days that my vision is cooperating more, I can get by some times without tactile ASL. However she has a habit of getting excited and trying to talk to me while I wash my glasses. I can't count the number of times I've said "I can't hear you. I'm blind." Without my glasses, I am estimated to have 20/400 or worse vision. It's interesting, but we make it work!

She's a super sweet person who under normal circumstances I wouldn't have met. (However she happens to be the little sister of my other friend. :) ) She and I are a lot alike, and though our challenges in life are different, we can relate to each other.
Other people may discount others as friends due to the belief that they wouldn't be able to communicate. My hope was to show others that if you both want to, you can always find a way co communicate. You just have to take that childhood 'create a secret language with your best friend' thing to the extreme periodically, but it'a so worth it! She'a taught me a lot more than I could have imagined, and I've had a lot of fun adventures over the years because of it.
