    In Adelaide South Australia many years ago, we used to go out on the town (those days are over :-) and late at night on the way home, we would always stop by the food caravan and get a 'Pie Floater' - An Aussie meat pie, upside down in a small bowl with thick(ish) pea soup poured over it and a splash of tomato sauce. Best thing ever!! You must try it. (That was about 50 years ago 🙂

    Wow! This video really triggered some fond memories! I had my first meat pie (a 'braidie') from the Strathisla Bakery, in Keith, after touring the world famous distillery. I was on my honeymoon and it was a beautiful, crisp, October day...hubby and I each had one, with some nice hot coffee, before returning to the station for the trip back to Inverness, where we were staying.
    I remember the young woman who was our tour guide at the distillery was very happy to talk to us, as we were from the States. She was planning a trip to America to travel our 'Whiskey Trail' and had a lot of questions! I bought 3, small, souvenir cookbooks in their gift shop that had recipes for pasties and bridies and make them on occasion! (My husband bought a bottle of scotch 😊). Our nuptials were a late life second (we were in our 50s and 60s), and we had 6 great years together (he has passed). His family was Norwegian, and I was a MacDonald, so it was fun to learn about the connections between Scotland and Norway (well, the Vikings, anyway). I will now have to give these a try. For those of you still with me on my ramble, thank you for indulging the memories of an old lady!

    This Scottish Aussie makes his own pies, and your recipe is *BANG ON!* That is exactly how I like to make my pies. They are great as you know exactly what is in there and, and at least you know they are hygienically sound. I am going to make up a batch of Steak & Kidney pies tomorrow morning. We no longer get Steak & Kidney Pies at any of the bakeries any more. I remember when I was home many years ago; I went to a butcher in Herts, and was surprised when he told me they did not sell sheep or ox kidneys any more. I love my Steak and Kidney pies; in fact; I like all pies, and now that I am retired, I enjoy making my own. In fact; I also make up the *LORNE* sausage recipe you gave us about 12 months ago. I love it. *Slàinte!*

      The comedian Billy Connolly did a tour of Australia back in the 1990s (he’s probably done several more since) and loved the place. I watched the VHS set until it almost wore out as a 14 year old and dreamed of a trip there from the UK myself. One of the things I remember was him introducing us all to the pie floater - although I could have sworn it was from a food truck near the Opera House in Sydney. Anyway, I didn’t make the trip there - I ended up in Vancouver. But my older brother did move to Melbourne and still lives there!

    • @steelcrown7130
      @steelcrown7130 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@maddoctor99 The food truck near the Opera House has expanded to a small chain of outlets. It started in the forties as "Harry's Café de Wheels". It does serve several things with mushy peas but the actual pie floater - a pie upside-down in pea soup - is definitely an Adelaide, not a Sydney, thing, and has its own Wikipedia article if you can credit it.

      You could use chicken. Most bakeries sell chicken pies too.

    You picked the right day to do an Aussie dish. You should make Lamingtons some time in the future.
