    Hi Jay,I have 4 of these and love them. By the way i think I preferred the un-edited sound. No offence but it had more depth in my opinion. i do use the Sennheiser mke600 for outdoor dialogue etc and sometimes indoor but the b5 is great indoors. Thanks for the review.

    Personally (like a couple of other commenters), I also think the unedited sound 'sounds' better and clearer. I've found many of your videos sound muffled, flat (I still love your videos though) and a bit unnatural. Though that could also be my gear.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The flat part I understand. I used to sing in a band, and we used to have to double track my vocals because of that exact reason. It's unfortunately the natural sound of my voice lol. As far as the muffled sound is concerned, I'm not sure what that's about. Thanks for watching!!

    Grat information. Most hunt for the big brands and mikes with big pricetags. But this Behringers offers LOTS of bang fir the buck. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    Pretty cool budget shotgun mic, it looks very nice touch and clean. ;)

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a shotgun. Small diaphragm condenser. Much better for indoor dialogue than a shotgun. Thanks for watching Jellyduck!

    Where was the microphone placed? How far away? Does it have the pop filter on? Most of us have rather bad experiences with non-shotgun mics in reverberant rooms, especially if the mic must be further away to keep it out of frame. That may be why the pros I know generally use shotguns except where the talking head is moving around (and then they use a boom man with a shotgun).

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The best placement for any directional mic (shotguns included) is within 12" (better at 6-8")from the subjects forehead, and aimed at the chest. No pop filter needed. And most pros actually use these types of mics for reverberant rooms, because shotguns pick up a lot of the unwanted frequencies from the back, while small diaphragm condensors (pencil mics) block most of them out. Shotguns are best for outside dialogue.

      @@JayLippman Clearly, we know different pros.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimshaw899 definitely a possibility. The pros that taught me always pointed me to pencil mics in untreated rooms. The only exception is when minimizing the reverb would take away from the story. So if the setting is a big, open warehouse, you want it to sound like a big open warehouse.

      @@jimshaw899 jay is right. Shotgun lobar pattern best for outside or well treated rooms. Shotgun is best for noisy areas, or trying to get sound from something 50 feet away (outside). Even some of the longest shotgun tube designs can't cancel out low frequency harmonics in a room with lots of reverberation and with low ceilings. Low frequencies are hard to cancel out. Takes about 4" of fiberglass. In these small rooms with mic closer to ceiling, the sound is going to come back towards the back or even reverberate towards front of mic again. You'll see shotgun mics used in big studios or newsrooms maybe even, but most people don't shoot in 50ft ceiling studios like a Verizon commercial.
      Where are small diaphragm condensers are typically super or hypercardioid, they get a bit more sound from the side compared to shotgun mics, however with a lot less from the back. Now a good majority or simply cardioid, and this mic itself probably not the 'best,' but it's at least decent for youtube videos. Further, it's a $70 behringer.

    Mine is too low so it needs a lot of gain, resulting in hiss.

    Hey would this be a good mic for a podcast?

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would work, but what you really want is a Large Diaphragm Condenser mic for a podcast. Like the Audio-Technica AT2020

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually broke this mic, but when I was using it, I had it positioned like a shotgun mic. Above my head, about 6" away from my forehead and pointed at my chest. No pop filter.

    What recorder did you use? Does the B5 need a lot of gain to normalize? Thanks!

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the Zoom H4n Pro.well, I did. Now I have a camera with an XLR port so I just record straight to the camera. You don't need a lot of gain, but you do need 48v phantom power.

    • @braveclyde
      @braveclyde 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jay! I'm using a Rode NTG2 (to reject ambient room sounds like the AC, other people, and others) and a Zoom H5 and the self noise is terrible. The NTG2 needs a lot of gain to get it to -12db on the H5. I know that the H5 has similar preamps with the H4n pro so now I'm thinking, if I switch to the Behringer b-5, I might get a lower self-noise while recording at -12db. What do you think?
