I can't afford my life in Toronto so I am considering moving to a Detroit suburb at some point in the next 12 months.

Quit bashing Detroit. There are some people who are moving to Detroit due to regional development. So see for yourself. Don't think about the bad ghettos. Every American cities had its ghettos.
I know what Detroit use to look like. Just ask someone in there late 60's or 70 they can tell u how nice it use to be.
@@bobs1356 ... My parents told me back in those days that Detroit was nice area with better hoods, mom and pop retail stores and booming auto factories. Then came the racial problems and the 1967 riots. Then Detroit downhill from there.
Today Downtown Detroit is getting better, and some hoods are getting gentrified.
@@jacobtennyson9213 Yes, where I grew up in Detroit was closer to the Southfield rd area, we where not close to the riot, and at that time my area was 100% white. The blacks where more by the Wyoming and Oakman area.

also worth mentioning is the 2.4% city tax you'll be paying, and the absurd auto insurance rates you'll get because of that high crime rate. lots to be excited about for the future of Detroit if you're a native with a long term outlook. but for anyone looking to MOVE to Detroit for career and such? just know that ain't gonna be like life in Chicago or something. you're gonna get all the pains of city life, with a fraction of the perks.

Where are you from so that I can determine if you are bias because metro Detroit folks have a lot of biases and hate on Detroit, some for valid reasons.
I would say today yes move to and Invest into Detroit. Before the bankruptcy, I would say no way but now Detroit is far better than Chicago, LA and SF California. In fact, Detroit's crime has gone down substantially and the downtown is thriving and the neighborhoods are a work in progress. Your money goes ten times farther in Detroit than the cities that I mentioned above. Also what took Detroit down wasn't the unions, though they didn't help. Instead, It was corruption on the local city level. Even the former mayor was put in federal prison. Another reason is unfair international trade. This put Detroit on an unfair advantage. Also when the automation came into play during the 1970s that also hurt Detroit. Why? So many hard working poor people that relocated from the south to Detroit, both Caucasian and African Americans, and they could not adopt when automation arrived because you need to be able to read well to use these technologies. Unfortunately, Detroit inherited the southern states issues. Before the wave, Detroit had the best public schools in the USA. Now that's all reversed, though Detroit still has excellent private schools. The bottom line is the corruption on the local level as well as corrupted former governors who would pass on Detroit problems to the next governor. Now it's been cleaned up thanks to Snyder's administration. By the way, Oakland CA was the first major city to go bankrupt and the state of California has had the most bankruptcies in the USA and some cities went bankrupt twice which I didn't think was possible. The California mass media don't want to talk about this and when they do they sugar coat it.
Also Dan Gilbert is a Detroit native and a big blessing for the city. Equally important, you never mentioned that Detroit has some mega projects such as the largest suspension bridge in the USA being built to Canada, the world largest train station that Ford has taken over and turning into a silicon valley hub coined as Brain Station. So not just Dan but Ford is investigating big as well. To my understanding Ford bought other properties in cork town to develop too.. Also you never mentioned the new skyscraper being built that replaced the largest department store in the world, Hudson. Anyhow my Native American friend bought blocks of property in the neighborhoods of Detroit back in 2017 and reaping the benefits now. He shows me how it's sold off and developed and more coming. The neighborhood has been reshaped and looks safe, nice, enjoyable and entertaining now. Note: I am from Kalamazoo. I also know a Japanese who bought up land in Detroit and is doing the same. One other thing, I had a student who came here for college from LA California and is now living and working in downtown Detroit and loves it. He says it is so much safer and so much cheaper than LA and that he's staying because of those two reasons. He also said artsy and creative too.

What do you think was the main occurrence that kicked off the resurgence in Detroit?
@@chillwill5080 a number of Mega projects, innovations, a huge range of investments from the rich who grew up in Detroit as well as a new police force. Things got cleaned up after the former corrupted mayor was put in federal prison. Basically, they had to clean house because too many of his phoney friends were in positions that they were not qualified for or managed well. This cleaning house played a big role too.

@@kagasaki6After an accidentally, the officer will make a judgement. You are either at fault, not at fault, or they split it by percentage, 50/50, 80/20. No way to know insurance rates, it will depend on your driving record and the zip code you live in.

I predict that Detroit will be the next artist mecca because the rest of America is becoming unaffordable for artists and musicians, both with home buying and rent. They're raising my rent from 1520 to 1600 on a one bedroom in Portland. The entire West coast is over.
Interesting prediction. I can def see some of the early signs of that happening already.
Absolutely right. Human Geography points to bohemians to help revitalize a city. You can find artist centers and collaborations in some of the areas most hurt by depopulation. Ferndale and Brightmoor are great examples.

What are some under appreciated areas of Detroit?
I like Detroit. I am a Grand Rapidian, relocated to the Bronx in 2007. And I used to work for a company in Southfield. Love Greektown and have a friend in Royal Oak. Grew up a Tigers fan! I know there have been some tremendous opportunities in real estate and wish I had stayed in Michigan for the gentrification and rehab of these older homes.
You haven’t missed the boat, still a lot of projects to go but things are def looking a lot different these days.
Detroit must not be that bad im seeing a huge infulx of new white residents buying homes in the city.
There is a big influx of residents and it's come a long way! Super exciting stuff going on in Det.
How silly. In 1950 there were 1.8 million residents. In 1980 there were 1.2 million residents. In 2000 there were 945,000 residents. In 2020 there were 628,000 residents. Today there are barely 600,000 residents. HUGE influx. Stupid people will buy anything if you put a ribbon on it and tell them a nice story. Until the people who live in Detroit change their voting habits and stop allowing politicians to run their lives nothing will get better. That's not happening any time soon.

I am very interested in investing there. It has hit rock bottom, so I am pretty sure it can only go up from there. I am just not sure about the timing, and what sorts of economic development plans are in place.

It doesn't sound really safe to do some farming in the outskirts. I still think Detroit is heading in the right direction. Detroit isn't a bad town, the people are nice, and they all want to make Detroit a city to visit not be afraid of. Detroit is one of only 5 US cities to make The World's 50 Greatest Places of 2022 list by @TIME Magazine. The world is learning what we've always known. To the hardworking and resilient Detroiters that make this city great, this is for you! Congrats.
Heading in the right direction is def a good snapshot of where Detroit is right now on the growth curve.
I am a native of Detroit, and wanted to buy back the house I used to live in in Northwest Detroit. But I learned about the high water bills, property taxes, poor city services and public transportation, and the fact that there are no major supermarkets in the city. So if I would have to go across 8 mile Road to shop, I may as well live north of 8 mile. Aside from this, there is also a "social issue" among some of the people there that is repelling for most Middle Class people who have gone to suburbs such as Birmingham. I have been saying for years that Detroit will never return to its former glory until it first, regains its Tax Base, and most of all, embraces diversity. But before this can happen the people need an attitude adjustment across the board. So let's not tip-toe around the issue. It is a racial matter.
As for the urban farming issue, that was already happening in the 1970s when people were able to buy lots vacated by HUD demolition and use the land to plant vegetable gardens. We were partners in just such an endeavor. But what was referred to here was the creation of corporate farms, which is the same concept on a much higher level. If the city can come up with a plan to transform these derelict areas into something beneficial to the city, then this could create a new "industry." But to do that, there needs to be a trained workforce. And with a failed Public School System with children unable to learn for various reasons, where are the workers going to come from?
There is a huge Meijer on Grand River at the site where the old Redford High School used to be. This is in the northwest
part of Detroit.

Actually New York City is over 300 square miles mate. Compared to Detroit's 143 square miles. 🤔🧐

I’ve lived in Michigan my entire life. I grew up in Lansing and moved to Grand Rapids seeking a better city life and opportunity… it took me 3months of living in west Michigan to realize the privilege, lack of diversity, and wealth was just NOT for me… so many people looked like me, but none thought like me or had the same life experiences as me… I started looking at Detroit and all the urban agriculture farms and gardens that are popping up and the people who are staying resilient and building a better city rather than leaving and forgetting. I moved here in June in the NW neighborhood as a single 25yo man, the people I have met have been nothing but incredible. Of course there are issues I’ve run into, such as litter, dumping, and the occasional person yelling in the street… but all in all I’ve never felt more at home here than anywhere else I’ve ever lived. I’m looking at property to start my own urban farm (a cool 3bd house move-in ready goes for about 80-100K), WAYYY less than the nationwide average…
Oh, and for crime- if you don’t look for trouble you should be ok. If you lock your doors, don’t walk around flaunting your cash, and keep a smart head on your shoulders you should be just fine. I’ve never had an issue.

I imagine it like mini Michigan for the downtown area. If you’re thinking of moving to the UK, don’t. 30 years of being here and I’m sick of the place. Might get a 5-10 year plan to up and leave

6:12 maybe you should of added little more context about he People mover, as it was designed to be part of a much bigger network/project which never happened, which is why it looks like it does.
I went to Detroit public schools and grew up in Brightmoor. Moving out was the best decision I ever made but I do hope it gets better.

I am a vet in Texas and I am thinking about moving to Detroit and I don't pay any property taxes at all and I am a 100% also. Do you just have to transfer my paperwork from Texas to them? Also no down payment on a house and a low mortgage for a house especially over 200 thousand to 300 hundred thousands dollars. Plus all healthcare is free. So @jetdrysdale don't hate

I'm not bout to cry about what you said about Detroit but it's very typical of somebody from the burbs. Know what you're talking about before you start talking. You can put Manhattan, Boston and San Francisco in Detroit not all of New York city. And the original Buddy's is on 6mile and Conant on Detroit's east side not downtown. Detroit is big as hell though
I would never go to that buddy's anymore we have one in Rochester just as good. I was at buddy's over 30 year ago in Detroit and the roof was leaking we has to move to another table.
Ok, but the ACTUAL best neighborhoods to move to inside Detroit are Indian Village, Rosedale, Palmer Woods, West End, Springwells, and the airport area.

Your still on the younger side but being a 73 yr old women who once lived there, I have good memories but then in my late teens we had to move, the value of our homes went down, and don't believe anyone who tells u that didn't happen because it did.

Dallas is around 350 square miles, that's almost triple the size of Detroit. Los Angeles is even larger. Just an FYI.

Detroit metropolitan area has many cities that are just what you are looking for. Taylor, Novi, and Canton come to mind as very suburban areas that enjoy a more decentralized lifestyle.
Question have you ever been there I mean besides being stuck up and going to downtown have you ever actually hung out with anybody there or but not on the outside of Detroit in the neighborhoods I grew up in Detroit and it's not all that bad it's who you socialize with
Hey Cathy, I will look past the stuck up part...but yes I had a friend who lived in Detroit and spent a lot of time there. It got to point where we couldn't go outside and play because of the crime happening on the street. Nothing against the hard working people who live in Detroit, but there are areas that are not that great. That's not my opinion, that's just a fact. That goes for every city though...

Detroit is a city of very prideful people, which you made absolutely no mention of. It takes hits like every other large city so don't you dare make light of its shortcomings like it's the only one with issues. Shirley here, I grew up in Detroit, I am 73, it was beautiful where I grew up. My friend and I would go downtown on Saturdays and spend the whole day down there and our parents didn't have to worry. I am sorry but your right about the city I would never ever move back, I love where I live it beautiful her all the big home they keep building the nice stores Trader Joe's, only in nice areas. There isn't one in Detroit.
I was ran out of the city of Detroit. For about 7 months I got rejected from over 50 different nursing jobs in the area. I later discovered the reasons given were not legitimate reasons, but people's opinions and desires for my life. I want to know why healthcare in this city seems to be dominated by cut throat, undereducated cliques...versus people who develop and maintain talent?

Rentals in the city limits shouldn't be considered. Very few people honor the rental system there. Try a neighborhood in the metropolitan area that has a strong or strengthening population growth, like Sterling Heights, Royal Oak, Allen Park, Southfield, or Wixom.
Nah, stay out of northern Michigan, go to Detroit.

You have to make sure you actually do your research before making these videos. I can tell you know NOTHING about Detroit. Dallas TX cannot fit into the city limits of Detroits 142 sq miles. Dallas is a MASSIVE 343 sq miles to be exact. Detroit can fit inside of Dallas. Also, the original Buddy’s pizza is NOT Downtown by no means. It’s on the North East side of the city…. No where near downtown.

Detroit, the armpit of America, Urban Prairies, whole neighborhoods razed, high crime rate, abandoned eyesores, the Packard plant, once an Urbexers dream, was supposed to be torn down, completely, last I looked it ran into snags, with privately owned dilapidated factories, which the city cannot tear down, perhaps that has changed, IDK. Massive empty office spaces, a dead downtown, just a mess.Hopefully they can turn it around, but, I don’t see how?
I went downtown this summer and it was lovely. Flowers everywhere, friendly people. Detroit has been through
some hard times, but the people are resilient and the city is improving.

You say avoid Detroit but everywhere you look "your people" are buying up properties in Detroit as fast as they can get their hands on them. Not only are they buying up all the property in Detroit, they're even building in Detroit everywhere. By the way how many times have you taken a ride on the people mover? How many times have you been on public transportation in Detroit? Have you ever lived in Detroit? Why is it always the people who do these videos have never lived in Detroit but always have so much to say. I have lived in Detroit for over 48 years and I see it with my own eyes every day how they are trying to slowly move back to Detroit . The gentrification has begun. Before you made this video did you talk to " your people" that have moved to Detroit in the last 7 years alone from the suburbs ? I live on the border of downtown Detroit in the inner city across the street from the water. There are so many caucasians living in this area now. I see them with my own eyes everyday. They've been moving to Detroit consistently for the last 7 years buying and starting businesses. I live near Belle Isle. Belle Isle is a State Park now and was predominantly black before it became a state park. Now it's predominantly white and a sprinkle of other non-white people here and there. It looks like your people didn't watch this video or you made it a little bit too late. If Detroit is so bad why are so many investors trying and buying properties all over Detroit. I'm talking about in the blighted areas too. Not just caucasians but other races that are not black are scooping properties up as fast as they can also. You made a lot of valid points but do some real research because what you're talking about is part truth. Wow I just saw your information if Detroit is so bad from your perspective why are you advertising trying to help people move to Detroit. Make it make sense please.

I'm surprised you didn't mention many neighborhoods to buy into in Detroit ! Many only gaining in value and the rehabbing is rampant. Some prime examples are: University Diatrict, Boston Edison, Sherwood Forest, Green Acres, East English Village and Bagley are all solid buys. Prices are rising. There are quite a few other neighborhoods to look at as well. Downtown and Corktown tend to only appeal to very young adults that desire a very urban lifestyle.

No earthquakes, tornadoes extremely rare, reasonable cost of living, nice people, four seasons of beauty,
many lovely towns and cities, a large number of colleges and universities.
I'm from Detroit, and take it from me. You do NOT want to move here. It's a crime-ridden, knuckleheaded infested 💩hole. He's right about public transportation. It SUCKS. The buses always coming late, or too early. They don't even come at all. They come when they want to come. My advice: DON'T move here. If you value your well being, and most importantly, your LIFE, move to the suburbs. You will have a piece of mind by doing that.

I'm was born in NJ...I moved to the westside of the city and have lived here 20+ years....I bought a house for 3k in 2014.... it's now worth 80k.... don't move to a city where the tax rate is 700 a year 👍👍👍👍....

I grew up in Detroit. I have lived in West Michigan for decades. Keep Detroit...I left and never looked back. If you are single or a couple with an education...I'm sure Detroit has good jobs and "chic" over-priced places to live....Downtown.
I would find it hard to believe that any person/couple with financial means would want to buy a house in a Detroit neighborhood, raise your kids there...and have them attend Detroit Public Schools.
Downtown Detroit is the "bells and whistles" of the City. The neighborhoods and schools are POS.
My suggestion...don't try to "revitalize" Detroit b/c it's the "progressive" thing to do. Certainly don't raise a family there. You can do better in the suburbs or out State. Get out of the Downtown area...and Detroit is a Lost city.

Hi, I would add this about Detroit. Detroit used to be famous as an American "melting pot" city. It was very multi-racial and multi-ethnic. A symbol of America. Today, it is a lost Black city. Big difference. I have only been to Maine once. Yes, it is a great State with a great Atlantic coastline. But...I would easily tell you that Michigan is superior. Get out of Detroit and see the rest of Michigan. If you toured Michigan I'm thinking you would like it better than Maine. It is a very unique State, esp. if you like water. I live in Grand Rapids. It was once featured a few years ago as one of the two top cities in the US to raise a family in one of the major US financial magazines.

While car manufacturers were facing increased competition from abroad the union put the squeeze on and forced car companies to make a choice to either increase prices beyond what the public would tolerate or move elsewhere. Nothing has really changed there either. Detroit is NOT coming back until the morons who live there learn the hard way not to vote for the same policies that killed their city in the first place. Canada is already acquiring much by using Detroit. About 5,000 Canadians commute daily to work from Windsor, and that doesn't take into account the many more who got visas that allow them to live and work in Detroit. Canada is paying for the new bridge which will quadruple commerce passing from their country into ours.
