  • I purchased this Lane Acclaim Coffee Table at a garage sale as part of a set of 4 Lane Acclaim Tables for $350. I sold the non-matching end tables for $250 and was left with the Side Table and Coffee Table. In this video, I will be refinishing the Dovetail Joint Coffee Table using Candlelite Gel Stain by General Finishes. I will apply a urethane topcoat of Arm R Seal by General Finishes. If you enjoy seeing furniture restorations like this one, please consider subscribing to my channel for more great content. Thank you for your support. Barry

I'm impressed by anyone who can look at a piece of furniture and say, "this part is oak, that part is beech, these accents are ash..." I look at it and say, "Hey, that's made of wood." ...and so ends the limit of my expertise. 😁😁 Beautiful work!

I am as well. I was trying to tell a friend tonight about the end tables and the coffee table my grandparents had. I could explain the shape of them (the coffee was differently shaped from anything else I've seen) but for the life of me I couldn't figure out what the wood was. It could have been walnut, but I just don't know.

I found a Lane Acclaim coffee table years ago at a flea market. It was just sitting there, amongst the rest. I bought it with money I didn't have and had to carry it the whole way home. Almost a decade later, $35 never looked so good. 😁

      You know That’s Right!
I had a chance to buy two Acclaim end tables.
Either the Seller did not know what she had, or was in dire need of cash.
I was such a FOOL I did not have the money, I guess I could have borrowed the money.
Yet, there was Mom and Dad in the back of my mind.
“The quickest way to ruin a friendship is money.”
      DAMN IT!
I should have taken the chance.
Acclaim is one of Lane’s most iconic designs IMO!
What a Beautiful 😻 piece of furniture you have to match your end table.

I myself have bipolar disorder, have lived in 10 cities and 5 countries and decided I want to stay in one place so am back in my home town currently, bought a house and trying to put down roots. I'm currently filling my time with hobbies and find renovating furniture very therapeutic and relaxing, I watch videos like yours for advice and ways to better myself.
I think your suggestions are quiet helpful and renovating furniture is something anyone can do and most would enjoy.
I've literally furnished my entire house with old furniture bought at thrift stores or Facebook market place which I've renovated and brought back to life, it is cost effective as well as fun !

In my case, having Complex-PTSD & finally finding a town to call home where I am able to feel stable enough to actually buy furniture (moving around a lot, I had mainly suitcases of stuff)! I just found a beautiful bedroom set that I began work on yesterday & I'm enjoying the meditative process of painting it all.

I got into it after I retired and after taking care of my parents , I was stressed from the job and taking care of my parents was so loving to do . after they passed away I did nothing one day I went to a auction and I brought an old dresser it looker bad a week later I met a couple from New Jersey at another auction and they where selling refinished furniture and it looked good .I ask them if they would redo a dresser for me , I carried it to them and begged them to let me hang out with them and learn the trade they . yes learning the trade and doing the work was so relaxing so I was slow they said but I was particular with bringing the wood back to life . I stayed with them for seven years and became good at it .

I'm a 3 - empty nester: I have had my furniture 35 plus years and I'm constantly looking around to find my next victim - I mean project. I also have lots of house plants, but they have to go outside and play in the summer. Just about to bring them back in. They've grown so much, I have no idea where to put them. The only thing I collect are sewing machines - in cabinets - that need to be restored. More projects for the upcoming winter.

    • @MadCityModern
      @MadCityModern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Hi Sandy. I am glad I am not the only one who has to bring all the plants back in for the winter. Can be quite a task as you know. Looking forward to hearing about your next project! Barry

Your comment made me literally lol! When I first started “dabbling” in the art of furniture painting/restoration, my kids made comments (especially my youngest daughter who’s 19) like “mom, you don’t have to do something to everything in the house”. She’ll appreciate “looking for your next victim”!
Now almost 5yrs later, I’m turning my hobby/redoing pieces for family members into a business.

I could have typed exactly this paragraph. I met my partner 8 years ago and 4 years ago we retired to high desert southern Calif. I was spoiled and lived in the OC where no winter. I propagated plants all year there. Ive lost plants here with sudden early freeze, even late freeze as last spring 2 of them and seeds that germinated died. Im researching natives and others that will not die or come back from roots. I have only one plant now to bring in and this winter left it out but in the west setting sun. Asparagus fern. Will see if the roots stay alive. I dont like plant pets! Amazingly English lavender does amazingly well. So I dry it and also have graduated to selling lavender sachets along with my many sewn items, jean bags because people asked where I got them and my sweatshirt jackets, at our tiny farmers market.

I have a gorgeous MCM Danish teak credenza with a white rings on it. So sad. But it was only $30 at Habitat for a humanity. True MCM has Pall Mall (or Chesterfields) burns on the tops….I used to see these tables for $10 at Good Will.

      I just bought my 4th sewing machine- a 1900 Brunswick with a beautiful, steam-pressed, book-matched tiger-striped cabinet with a fascinating self-storing mechanism.
It would make more sense if I sewed, but I don't.
I used my mom's treadle Singer to re-make some boat seats 40 years ago. When I got my first treadle antique, I called up Mom and told her I needed to drag this thing over for fresh instruction. I've forgotten everything I lesrned.
      "Just TH-cam it!" she suggested.
What's the point of having an 82-year old mother if she's already done teaching you?

I was working in the alley behind our house when I turned to see my wife walking down the alley with our dog walking beside her. My 5' 2" wife was carrying coffee table on her head. "Where'd you get that?" I asked. "Someone had thrown it in the alley," she replied. "Hmm, how did I not notice that?" She explained it was in an alley over on "the east side of the park." She walked home with a Lane Acclaim coffee table on her head for two miles. She refinished it and gave it to her brother, who has a mid-century ranch. Now she always remembers to bring her phone with her on walks.
    Beautiful work, Barry!

You talk to all of us like we are visiting for the afternoon. I love the fact that I can come here and it is staining and real work with a few tools, not all painting, decopage and destressing. I know you do that too but in moderation. So your channel is different from FFT, Transcend, Kacha, Muscari and various others I have not named here but enjoy. I like them for their delivery and take on furniture....but I to am a healthcare worker ( 28 years a nurse) and like to look at the antiques and thrifted finds around your garage. I could spend an afternoon asking you about them and would show your pics of my Irish Wolfhound Saxon. I am in my early 50s and you seem like a good friend. I would love to sit down with Tom Johnson and just watch him use those fabulous clamps he has, or Dashner and laugh at that soothing voice of his. This is how I spend my evenings while hubby watches scary things on Netflix. Keep it up...you are doing so well developing the flow...it keeps us coming back.

This comment made me smile. As much as I enjoy the furniture projects, finding ways to connect with so many amazing viewers has become my focus. I do my best to tell a story the way I see it, and I cannot explain how rewarding it is when others are able to relate. That is so much more powerful than what finishes or colors we agree on. I watch all of the folks on YT that you mentioned and I appreciate all of the talent and diversity. Thank you for taking the time to send this uplifting message. Barry

I discovered the Acclaim series in the late seventies and early eighties, when it was out of style, and common in thrift stores. I have six living room pieces, a dining set, and a bedroom set. Need another, 60-inch coffee table and I’ll make another head board, to have two bedroom sets.
On refinishing I use “CitriStrip”, to get the existing finish off, (more environmentally friendly and easier to dispose of properly). I follow that with a quick run over of 200 and 400 grit sand paper, by hand, power sanding is too easy to go through the veneered top.. Then I do a couple of applications with “walnut” danish oil. Followed by two coats of water based urethane with “yellow walnut” analyne dye added, to get a very good representation of the factory tinted finish. Sand between the urethane coats, with a 200 grit sandpaper. You can do more coats of urethane if you want, but don’t add the aniline dye, or you can get too dark.
Tip, the disposable plastic scrapers are a bit safer than the metal ones, particularly if you take a bit of sand paper or a file, and round the corners so they can’t dig in.
And be very very careful sanding the tops, the veneer is only 1/50th thick and very easy to sand through. (Lesson learned file, I destroyed two tables before I decided to never power sand the Acclaim stuff, if it so rough it needs to be sanded, I pass on it). On your table which had been refinished before, i would be extremely hesitant to sand it at all.

    • @MadCityModern
      @MadCityModern  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Hi Randall. I really look forward to great comments like this. I am certain I would be jealous of your collection. For the stripping process, I prefer to use a plastic scraper. You will see that in most of my other videos. Unfortunately, at the time of this project, metal was what I had leftover. I was aware of the thin veneer for this project. I sanded most of this by hand and then followed up with 220 on the orbital to prep for staining. The only reason I was willing to risk using the orbital sander was because of all the other veneer projects I had done recently. I think it requires a constant awareness. Thank you for all this valuable information. Don't hesitate to continue giving great advice as you watch my other videos. Barry

Hi Barry, I just came across this “older” video and wondered how it had evaded my scrutiny! I’ve been stalking you for about 4 or 5 months now, ever since I came across you and your wonderful channel with your super easy and intelligent narrating of what you are doing, and why. I couldn’t believe there is so much to KNOW about woodwork and restoration. I did love the comment about pets and kids under the tables who might appreciate the work you’ve done down under! It reminds me of one of my nephews (who is 53 now) who would lie under my sister’s coffee table pretending to be a motor mechanic! “Wrench please, thanks. Screwdriver please, thanks!” He was so cute!

You are so right. After a great loss, I discovered restoration for myself. I'm more of an intellectual person. But reading and writing didn't help me anymore. Just by painting and using my hands, I was able to concentrate. Thanks to many videos, especially those by Lothar Greef, Heiko Resch, Thomas Johnson, I am more and more confident when it comes to restoration. However, my favorites are antiques from the Biedermeier period. But I like your style and especially your perfectionism. Just seeing how organized your workshop is makes me smile. Have a good time, Helena

I HAD to watch this video. I'm upstairs, sitting at my computer monitor, which is sitting atop a Lane Acclaim Plateau coffee table top. Something happened to the legs during a move, but Dad saved the top to "fix it someday". Years later, it ended up with ME. I had my uncle put skirting and tall legs on it. (I told him that I wanted to keep the crayon marks.) It's one of my favorite pieces of furniture. I'd love to have the bench cocktail table.

Im a fellow Wisconsinite and just found your channel not long ago. We have a few really nice pieces of furniture that we purchased new about 20-25 years ago. The pieces are still in excellent condition, but getting dated and aged. The pieces are solid wood and made by hand so I really just want the pieces to be cleaned up and updated. My goal is to learn the basics well enough to do justice to the craftsman. Ive been buying small wood pieces at the thrift store and practicing on them. Not quite where I want to be yet, but getting there. I just love watching your videos. You're a good teacher. Thanks for sharing the work you are doing!

We both like order and although we use our coffee table regularly (eating dinner in front of the TV, coffee etc) it’s always cleaned afterwards and everything put back into place, just so. He’s a Virgo and i’m a Libra so everything has to be “just right”. I think we drive each other a little crazy at times but that’s life. When our kids come visit it becomes a 1 much to our horror! 😂

Ha, HA! Donna, I don't know about libra and virgo, etc. But practically, if you cannot prop your feet up, and put a pizza and drinks on the coffee table, then why have it? Pretty sure that what Barry is showing here is not indestructible but close to it. Of course within common sense, this is not easily damaged. I wish he had put a wax layer over the surface, it takes the brilliant shine out, and imho, easier to wipe off. I have done this kind of work for years and props to him for not following the pack. This is kind of insightful, I enjoyed it.

Restorations as therapy, what a great idea. I'm 63 and have been fixing things up since I was a kid so restoration is not a new thing to me. Since the madness of covid hit, I've restored a sweet old Heywood Wakefield desk, a boat load of Cushman maple furniture, a big ole box of Ronson lighters, all of my axes and hatchets, several rifle stocks, a 1970 Wheel Horse tractor for my Dad to play with, a bunch of cast iron skillets, a half a dozen Coleman lanterns, many oil hurricane lamps... I figure the money saved not buying beer puts me at about even on the cost of supplies for restorations. You tube is such a wonderful resource for tips and tricks. On furniture with little dings, I've been dabbing shellac in the dings with a toothpick before sanding. Try it, it works well.

Omg this elderly lady i sit with has the same coffee and end table with the dove tail design. It’s in mint condition. This is the first time I’ve ever seen another set of them ... wow

I am an empty nester. My furniture is the victim of years of nail polish/remover, model car glue, soda/beer can rings and countless shoe marks. I keep thinking I should refinish it. One day I will. I remember loving that beautiful NEW table. Currently, I am loving those beautiful OLD memories.

I inherited this coffee table and matching end tables in my parents estate. Still solid as when they were new.

I am a collector, a number 4. Your beautifully refinished table would be a perfect place to display a few pieces from my silver-plate collection. Wallace Baroque silver anyone?

    • @MadCityModern

That collection would intrigue me. Where do you find most of the pieces?

  • @jgalt155

A place for everything and everything in its place…according to taste of course. Your work has inspired me to tackle a 1940s cocktail cabinet In mahogany with black obsidian tiles Imported to Scotland by an uncle who served as an engineer with the RAF during WW2 in India and Egypt , my memories of the piece as a child is of a pack of gold tipped Sobranie cigarettes and a bottle of Gordon’s gin or a fine Scotch mirrored by the many black glass inserts .

I am just watching you and a few others refinish furniture. I have chronic headaches and can't handle the fumes or the bending. I'm trying sewing but having trouble concentrating due to the chronic headaches. I'll get there. I am a 2 but sometimes a 1! My husband is super neat and I drive him crazy cause I'm not as orderly as when all 5 kids were home. Now when the grandkids are over their parents will clean up with them before they leave which is a life saver! You do good work. I like watching you and listening to you. That Wisconsin accent. Lol.

Hi Vickie. You may have limitations, but your words may be your greatest gift in the furniture world. I look to the comments for wonderful words of encouragement like this, and yours certainly never disappoint. You have that gift. Barry

@@MadCityModern thank you Barry. 😊😊. At this moment all I can do is praise the hard work you put into your projects. I love that you don't resort to painting right away. There's a time to paint, and a time to not paint. You try to repair and restore. I like that.

I love the Lane Acclaim series and I have 2 of the long coffee tables and had a square one that I gave to my friends daughter..she loves the design too. The ones I have are different lengths. I love your channel and explanations. I did refinish them about 30 years ago. Most pieces I have I bought at thrift stores in the 90s and repaired and refinished and use to this day. Now with the kids grown I am looking for more projects..thanks for all your tips.

I have a set of these tables that have been abused for years. They belonged to my husbands family. I've been hesitant to refinish them but after watching this I believe I will go ahead with it.
