  • I found this old farm house table on the side of the road, along with an old trunk and a bag full of baseball bats. This is the perfect opportunity to restore the table, and apply a few stain washes from general finishes.

This little table is a "make-up" table for a young girl's bedroom! I had one just like it when I was a girl!!! You did a good job bringing it back to life! (I am 79 now!)

This is a vanity table, just like Jan Thompson says and, at one time, it had an oval mirror base attached to it or had a mirror hung on the wall. My sister and I shared one of these in the late 60s/early 70s.
You've done a beautiful job of restoration, but I must admit, I nearly cried when I saw the very dark stain come out. This piece of furniture, in my memory, was usually light, lighthearted, light wood or light colored, depending on the decor and taste of the young woman who used it. Lovely work, though, very lovely work. Always a pleasure to watch. ❤

Trish, you are correct. I had one for years that I got from my Grandmother. There was a sweet chair, also kidney shaped with spindle back, that went with it. My brother, now 79, had his first birthday picture taken while sitting on that chair. I hated parting with that table and chair, but passed it on to my cousin who has little granddaughters and I hope they find joy in using this dressing table. Oh, and there was always a frilly skirt on it and the drawer was for hiding secrets.

Yes we had it in our house too. My grandmother took fabric and pleated it and wrapped it around the table to the drawer on each side. She called it a vanity table and kept her little suitcase ( trunk of supplies underneath hidden by the cloth. Some people called it a writing table too.

Thank you to so many of you who suggested this was a vanity. I'm certain you are right, so thank you. This was in many ways a simple project, but I just couldn't say no when I saw all of the makeover choices : ) Big restoration coming to the channel soon! Thank you for all the support! Barry

OK, so no you've mixed stains. Now try to thin them. This way, you don't have to be in such a rush to wipe it off and result will be very contiguous. (even - sorry). You could always add another coat or change the color.
Have you seen this blond woman, professional, John's Refinishing? Now she does everything "the right way". She is just amazing. Will send you the link if you don't know her already. Don't "trust the process", but know the concept. MY 2 cents. Props for going into the story behind the desk. Nice touch, makes it interesting.

@@ericbowen3813 It's not flattering to disparage one person in an effort to uplift the work of another person. I don't think Barry would appreciate that at all.
Since Trena learnt her craft from her professional Dad from being a kid, she has years of experience and knowledge to draw on so naturally what she does is going to be different from any other person doing a similar task.

This table reminds me of one in my Aunts home. She covered the top in fabric and added a skirt all round in the same fabric. There was a chair from a car seat also covered in fabric. It was called the Princess bedroom as she did it for my 16 year old sister to escape the new baby at home, me! That was 76 years ago. My aunt was the person who taught me to sew . I still think of that bedroom and the work and love she put into it. Thank you Barry for doing the same with your furniture pieces.

That made for a nice restoration. That is certainly a late 60s or 70s vanity. That was an old table cloth on the top. Many times they were used as plant stands with a cover like that, then turned over to kids. That stain turned out well. I usually use a sealer or even a thin coat of shellac to prevent blotchy finishes. Get an sandpaper eraser stick and clean your sand paper to make it last. I have been using them with success for 30-40 years. If you don't have a wood lathe you can make one fairly easy, maybe not for turning wood but to sand those kind of legs. A relaxed atmosphere, even watching old westerns allows for better work.

I love the provincial color stain. I have used it on most of my unfinished red oak pieces. I usually cut it with 1/3 natural stain so it isn't as dark and the red from the oak doesn't show through. It becomes a nice golden oak color. The little table in this video has such a graceful shape, and the color makes it elegant.

I have a lot of pine furniture left from the previous owners of my house. I sanded everything down and refinished them in amber shellac. I love the warm beautiful glow.

When I heard it was pine, I immediately thought of the steel in vinegar trick to make it black. It’s beautiful the way you did it.

I was surprised just how lovely the top was even before the stain. I tend to prefer the warm, amber, honey color of pine but this darker stain is also quite nice. Elegant in its simplicity. Well done. Another one saved.

I llike the finish. Makes it look as though the piece is old, but cared for--a patina.

This is probably my favorite piece I've seen you do. I remember seeing this table at my grandmother's house when I was a little girl. It was in her bedroom. She used it as a makeup table.

Years ago, I donated a antique side table to a yard sale that was raising $$$ for a local organization.
I had the piece kicking around the house for about 20 years...using it for this and that.
When I helped the older lady who purchased it load it in her car, I flipped it upside-down.
There on the bottom my daughter (who was standing next to me) had written her name in crayon!...most likely when 5 years old.
My daughter, now an adult, smiled at me and said, "busted!"
