We’ve been given EXCLUSIVE access to the original concept cars for the new Renault 5. Join Ginny as she compares the two to see if the production version is even better.
Re-inventing an icon is never an easy thing to do, but that’s exactly what Renault is hoping to do with the reborn R5. Having seen MINI and Fiat successfully resurrect classic designs from the past, the French giant is betting big on its iconic supermini. It ushers in a new era of electric Renaults and will be followed into showrooms by a reborn Renault 4, which will also take styling cues from its famous predecessor.
Re-inventing an icon is never an easy thing to do, but Renault has pulled it off with the Renault 5 E-Tech. You can’t miss the design elements that have been inspired by the original, but they’ve been updated with a modern twist. Stand-out features include the reinvention of the bonnet’s vent grille is a state of charge indicator in the form of the iconic number five, which lights up as the driver approaches - as do the pupil-shaped LED headlights that ‘wink’ at you.
There are two batteries up choose from; a 52kWh battery that gives the Renault an official WLTP range of 248 miles which will be the only option from launch, while a smaller 40kWh battery managing 186 miles will be joining the lineup at a later date.
The Renault 5 E-Tech comes as standard with 11 kW bi-directional charging including vehicle-to-load capability. This allows you to charge an electrical device - whether it’s your laptop or an e-bike - from the 5’s high voltage battery. It also means that the Renault supports vehicle-to-grid charging, which allows you to use the car’s battery to help balance your home energy or even to feed power back into the grid and earn money from it at peak times. You do need a home charger that’s capable of supporting this function, though; not all home wallboxes can do this even if the car has the necessary tech.
Does the new Renault 5 look like a winner to you? Let us know in the comments below.

This is the first car in years I've actually been excited about. I really want one!
Agree that they really nailed it -- the design speaks to the heart, the performance and price speak to the head. Think this will be a big success.
Quite annoying that it will be on sale in 2025, as I want one. Now 😂😂
Wholeheartedly agree. It's exactly what I've been wanting from an EV. It also pays so much respect to the originals
@@ssmith954 It will only be a big success if priced right for the average Joe.
Agreed, waiting for pre order start
Renault, Peugeot and Citroen are showing the world how good they are at design. Some of the best looking cars and interiors have been designed by these 3 French manufacturers. Well done guys!!
Are u serious Peugeot and Citroen really have bad design especially the last few years
@@ocoet3575 Both are producing great cars. Peugeot 208, 308, 3008, 408, Renault Mégane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech, New Renault 5. Citroen C4 and C4x. All great designs
Their engines are badly designed
@@1jakedizzleWhich hardly matters in an EV. But, I’d argue the Peugeot derived diesels are excellent engines
@@hughM9 but the petrol turbos are terrible. I’d also argue build quality and design is important in any car. Look at the charging issues Electric Peugeot’s have
I think Renault dealers may need to stock up on tea and coffee for customers. There will be plenty of interest in this car......Lots of choice at the higher end of the EV market already, but this is where the market needs to be now..... This will be an absolute winner for Renault... Watch out for lots of heavily discounted new Corsa E's...but why would you even bother, when this car vastly undercuts the Corsa E on price, and looks *way* better?
Great little car. Well done Renault!
Thinking that all the underlies are Dacia Spring .... So already tried and tested ?
Funny how the English and Americans think that speaking easy words and gesticulating with their hands make them more intelligible to foreigners !
The foreigners may speak english with a French accent, BUT they actually learnt English so no need to treat them as if they are stupid.
Coffee and pagette!
😂
@@user-oe1mb9hu9iit isn't based on the Dacia Spring.
@@siviter They wouldn't tell you would they. LOL. Daia Spring = springboard for all Renault EV "solutions". If it doesn't work = doesn't really matter, it's an entry level exercise. If it does work = Integrate that into Renault. They wouldn't advertise it would they. It's how engineering works though before it's put through the marketing dept.
It's called economies of scale and is used extensively by stellantis. Same goes on with VW group products. Audi,Porsche, Lamborghini etc etc.
They have completely nailed this. It is wonderful.
I have now looked at a couple of other channels and the interview with designer is an exclusive which also adds to the coverage here.
She's done an outstanding job of translating that from a concept into something actually manufacturable. From an aerodynamic perspective that separation edge she's talking about with regard to the tail lamps is such a simple and clever detail and also subtly references the wide-body turbo of the 80s. Also those cutom colour interiors look like they're way more expensive than they actually cost to make, purely because its so well detailed.
We need more women in the industry. She has done a great job
@@o0alias0o the designer is Gilles Vidal
I think thousands of people in the UK will be happy with this little slice of nostalgia. At €25,000 it is NOT the usual Stellantis £35,000+. Finally Stellantis have some competition! A well priced 200 mile car.
Yeah, whats up with Stellantis. They seem to think that mayching a Model 3 price for eveything is going to work?
@@deeyup Agreed that most of Stellantis is slightly bigger (not the Fiat), but they are all £35,000 to £45,000 for a 200 mile family hatchback. This is importantly cheaper. As long as you can manage Vauxhall Corsa sized. However, Stellantis is ICE based and adapted for EV. This is EV designed and built.
The Citroen ec-3 will be cheaper and seems very good, but it is based on an ICE platform unfortunately.
@xWood4000 Indeed.... I have an E-C4 and a friend has Mokka EV. Both are based on ICE and both started around £35,000. They have both devalued by around £20,000 in just 2 years!! I think it's because (1) Overpriced at the start (2) Technology moves and ICE based dates badly.
only 200 mile ?? no thanks
The French are killing it with the car design language in recent years! These new Peugeot and Renault vehicles look amazing, miles ahead of their German and American equivalents.
Renault Megane e tech also great car. Not only looks great, but the EV drivetrain is also very good.
haha no. Mercedes does great concept cars as well
"Humanise the technology" - YES!!!
My first car was a 1974 R5. The one with the gearstick coming out of the dash that you could hang things on.
New R5... WOW. I want one ... where do i Sign.
Love the colours. The interior is just R5 .
The Alpine will be the R5Turbo of the 70's and 80's. Little pocket Rocket.
Well Done to Renault for getting this done. Exactly what the market needs.
Memories, memories... I learnt to drive in a Renault 5 - with a floor mounted gear lever, no less. The standard gear lever was an umbrella handle straight through the dashboard. Now this EV surely must be a tremendous success, in my humble opinion! Well done Renault! And Thank You Ginny.
It looks extremely close to the concept and I like it a lot. Very excited for the next generation Twingo, which will similiarly be a throwback to the original Twingo design of the 90's.
Finally manufacturers are seeing the light and starting to get serious with the everyday small stuff... Just need to adjust the prices downwards
They've recreated a Renault 5, with electrics! Will definitely look at it for my next car. To replace my E208. Waiting to view the driving impressions. And I'll want yellow, too!
Love it. I love to see a red version down the line. My first car was a left hand drive R5 back in the 90s. To this day I have fond memories of it.
I think that it looks similar to the concept car because it is one of the few concept cars that I have seen that looks sensible.
Was watching the TF1 video, they were mentioning the parts are all sourced withing 300 Km reducing supply chain risks, including French made batteries, so no rule of origin tariffs when importing the UK. Renault are releasing a cheap bi directional charger with the car for V2G reducing that cost, but France and Germany planned at the moment Yes, I an a nerd... 🤓
Great info! 👏👏
French made batteries? I assume they import all the minerals and put them together in France
Love it, I really regret not buying a R5 Turbo in the 80's this is wonderful
Memories of a friend's (terrifying) Renault 5 GT Turbo come to mind. Love the looks of this. Can't wait to test drive one.
I'm not usually one to like small cars (Smart cars aside), but I really do like the look of the 5. The interior looks fantastic, especially with that Yellow 'denim'.
One thing that does seem like a bit of a miss is limiting it to 11kW charging on AC, we have a Zoe and it's very handy having the 22kW charger, it means we can get a reasonable amount of charge while shopping (or having breakfast at Spoons) as new Aldi stores have 22kW chargers rather than 7kW, plus it only being 25p/kW means it doesn't cost the earth like a rapid charger
Finally a small car! Some of the stats aren't exactly revolutionary but looks like a well designed package. High up on my list to test drive for sure.
I prefer to pay £25k and charge at 90/100kw than to pay £35k and charge at 130kw. Stats look very similar to the mini (two battery sizes and charging speed), but hopefully at least £5k cheaper and much bigger boot. Winner
Love it , can't wait for Apline version 😊❤❤. This is EV we need small cheap and great looking 😊
Alpine ! 😅
Back in the 1980s in Bodø, Norway we had almost decided to buy a "R5" except, one day driving home with a colleague in his "R4" going up a hill his car just slowed down, stopped, then slid backwards into a guard rail, where it finally stopped moving. This made a lasting impression, so we bought a 4WD Subaru Justy. Fast forward to 2023, and we buy a VW Buzz, our last car purchase. That said, the R5 looks like a delightful car, in yellow or green.
strange, the R4 was looking outdated from its birth, but it's incredibly reliable, they are still used today to cross the desert each year ( "Rally 4L" )
Brilliant I think they will sell loads. They deserve to it’s a breath of fresh air. I look forward to the road test and for me the sports one.
Cute as a button. Can't wait to see you do a full review of it. Once again, it confirms that you Europeans are SO much more enlightened, with all kinds of EVs to choose from, unlike on this side of the pond.
It is good that it comes with "low power options" as this will make insurance more accessible for more people.
Well done Renault, you absolutely nailed the design, on the new 5. You really need to make it possible to buy it in non metallic RED too, like the Turbo. Best color!
Impressed by this car, nothing turns me off it which almost never happens! I had a Renault five for 18 years and it never let me down, so this may be a serious contender for my next car! ❤
Bonjour from a Brit living in France. Looking forward to seeing this little beauty on our roads soon.
Moi aussi !
Stunning, absolutely stunning……..and that baguette holder…😮
Oh wow. I will genuinely consider switching my Model Y for this. So much character.
Great interview with the designer too
Other commentators saying it will have a starting price of £22k in the UK, it is 25k EUROs. If true, that is very impressive! One of the best looking electric cars made. Nostalgia is a big seller!
She did say the 25k was a mid spec. Based on the podcast, this video was filmed a few weeks ago, I guess Renault was still being a bit more coy on the price back then
Brilliant, just love it and yes to the yellow. Having said that, im also drawn to the 💚!!
Much more informative review than others, thank you 👍
Stunning, desirable and seemingly well designed….
What a brilliant interview with the designer - I watched the launch of the 5 and the passion from the CEO and all the team really shone through. Yes the range is a bit limited but that will get better with better battery tech and will do the city dwellers just fine - but what a fabulous looking vehicle. Very quirky but simply brilliant. Very clever to do the accessories including a baguette holder! Great episode.
Oooh... Can't wait to see this in the flesh. The Renault 5, eC3, Dacia duster /spring all in the affordable bracket, as long as I fit in it (Big Bloke am I) then this may go to the top of my shortlist. Love the look of it.
We've bought the R Pass so we are one of the first to get one. That is how impressed we've been.
That looks fab. Great city car! Great review!
So pleased they decided to revive the R5! The GT Turbo was one of their all time greats and still an icon.
Looks fantastic. Had one of these early 80's. Brilliant to drive, not good to start on damp days.
Looks brilliant and what with v2l and v2g awesome, all future evs should have it
Absolutely in love with it!!! 😍
An excellent piece of product design, which resonates with the much loved original. Sure to be a hit.
This was fantastic insight. Well done
I love it. 💛 I had a Super Cinq back in the mid 90s and loved her, so it’s fabulous to see a new Renault 5, this new one looks wonderful. 💛
There's lots of talk about European manufacturers being at risk from cheaper Chinese models. That may be true of some or even most, but this car has something that no Chinese car is going to have - huge desirability. It's the coolest electric car ever made and I predict that Renault are going to really struggle to keep up with demand. It's stunning and I want one!
Great video, the design logic makes sense. I'm sure this will be popular
I'm in love with the new R5e..... Renault have absolutely nailed it! In '79 I had a 5 ts and loved it. My 5 gtl that followed was lovely too but not quite as exciting. Sadly I can't afford a new R5e so will have to admire from a distance 😢😊....merci Renault!
This is how city EVs should be. So refreshing to see a design for the modern cramped cities and towns.
I really like the design and the overall concept. Although not a big EV fan but I could be tempted with this.
I love the design of this little hatchback, hopefully it comes to Canada as LeCar part deux 😊
Very cool, I like how much of the concept they kept. I wish it had the concept headlights as an option though, they are very cool. Glad they did a great job with the interior and hopefully the dynamics are as good as people driving the test mules indicated. It really reminds me of the 1st gen BMW mini in nailing the modern but retro and IMO looks much better than the mini electric.
Love it! Just re-entered the Renault market with my first electric Zoe, which I love!
After having Clio's years ago I must admit a fondness for Renault and will certainly be considering this Hot Hatch when I eventually come to replace my Zoe, the hardest choice will be the colour though!
We need more smaller EVs like this!
Can i ask a question the Ambient lighting on the dash is lit up yellow is this able to change different colours 🤔 thanks 👍
They've done a great job. I do prefer the yellow concept, mainly due to the lower overall height of the bonnet, but I understand there are practical factors at play in bringing the idea to fruition. 👏
Rare for me to say this but… there isn’t a single angle I don’t like it from, well done Renault. It’s definitely got that ‘i want’ factor! 👏🏼
From the side it just looks like a Dacia. Front n rear nice though
Excellent. If it has 500kg towing capacity, then it will certainly have a way to carry bikes in the back. With that baguette carrying basket, it has all the accessories I need.
Thanks for the video. I hope they bring this car to Australia. I want one, provided it is a reasonable price.
More of this! Less of the frumpy mummy-pants SUVs!
I might be able to afford one of these second-hand in ten years. Which is great, because in Australia, our brutal conditions and physical isolation makes interesting cars like these normally off-limits, as they just won't be reliable. But these are electric, so now we can dive in! 🙂
The colours are fabulous!!
My new heart-throb. .....and the Renault is fantastic too. I hope they do well with it !
I love this! Renaults recent design language is looking reallly nice 👌Its definitely more inspired by the Renault 5 turbo of the late 80's early 90s, than just the normal R5.
If below the 25k and is close to the claimed mileage, I think this is going to sell really well, Mini and fiat need to watch their backs.
Pearl white gt turbo, my first car, 2.22 mins in. Still love it.
started to drive a long time ago with a red R5 from french firefighters (+200K km) and i guess this one will be my first EV car :p, nostalgia you won
Looks nice and a decent package.
The MG4 has coloured lights in the charging area to indicate the level of charge. Only indicates which quarter the charge is at though, not more fine-grained than that.
Does the screen block the view of the road?
Iam in love with this car, and will purchase one when it is introduced ❤
I have fond memories of the original Renault 5, the new model has retained the charm of the old model, but in a modern form.
Interior looks better than most (although would like to see it in real life) - the baguette basket is a touch of genius that at the same time could only be French.
Range is better than I expected, although I would like it to be a little longer, maybe an extra 20% at most, so it is close to ideal for me.
Even the price is good. I expect Renault will be selling a lot of Renault 5s
Just beautiful ❤️
Nice to see a production car that looks 90% like the concept car. C'est Magnifique!
Looks better in price/specs then the new Mini Cooper SE👍
Very nice perfect for someone that live in the city , a little shy on range for me I will stay with my GV 60 . Thank you Ginny.
One of most beautiful cars ever
Will probably do well on the leasing market. 25k is still a lot for a small car.
Will be a great used bargain.
Great presentation.
What an exciting looking car.
I loved the concept one but was resigned to seeing the production one toned down to banality by too many focus groups.
Instead this is actually better and loaded with nice touches.
I love it !! Just hope that it isn’t marketed with a stupidly high price and toned down aka the Honda E.
Also I will be very intrigued to see what the Alpine version is like.
I want 2 of them. A green 💚 basic one, as cheap as possible & a 🤍 Alpine that will smoke arrogant bigger cars.
Maybe a 🧡 one too since "Jamais 2 sans 3" & that was the one my parents had.
I friggin love this thing.
I'll buy one for sure. Maybe not the first year but this will be my going to work car.
This will sell really well.....great job Renault.
Nailed it. I want one.
Plug&charge and V2L, amazing, good guy Renault! The yellow is great, but I would immediately get that gorgeous green one with a white accent line and roof. Also, while I love the headlight body, I can't stand that little light square they decided to create in the middle of the headlights. Too gimmicky, there is already a light square motif below in the bumper, what gives.
I love it. It really could be an instant classic. I hope it is well-built.
Looks great! The R5 is a great icon to reinvent and it’s a massive step forward over the Zoe. Let’s hope the drive matches it’s looks!
Europes first shot against the Chinese Automakers, likely to be a little bit more expensive than them but with history and brand loyalty.
this is a piece of art. I'd get it. Hope someone can make a compact sedan. Like the Japanese ones in the 70s
Honestly thought that white square was the TH-cam full screen button
I've owned lots of different cars in over 50 years of driving but none have been a Renault. But this new 5 looks great, I really like it and will definitely be taking a close look at one when they become available.
It looks absolutely brilliant. Fantastic job Renault, they are going to sell tons of these.
Looks excellent! Really excited about the new R5!
I like it, I saw pictures of the concept car last year, but I wasn´t sure is it real. I hope they give the classic tiny door handles to the 2 door version.
Great review Ginny. I think this car is going to be a real winner.
Looks very good in black !
That's lovely, but I would like it in bright red like my late Dad's 1985 model.
Yes please.
Great!
... Now I want to see the Alpine version. 🙂
I am in love!!
Beautiful.... just beautiful
Absolutely quite frankly, this is the car I'll be looking to replace my mini electric, which will be for this end of year. After I went BMW and Mini 10years ago, didn't think returning to french cars... but this really puts them aside. Oh dear I am excited with an R5...
I bought 2 R5's for 75 euro when I was 18. They were my first cars euh wrecks.
To say it's landmark car is a massive understatement
Awesome presentation and car! 😍😍😍😍
The real new r5 does look better than the concept. I loved the original r5, ended up with many fast fords (RS turbos) and Peugeot's (GTis), now looking forward to seeing these retro futuristic cars on the road!
Absolutely beautiful 😍
