I went to see Radiohead on this tour when they played Manchester. Before the last song, Thom read out a letter from a fan who was in the audience. This letter said how the girl and her brother had gone to see Radiohead on their previous tour, the crowd cheered. Thom continued, the show the girl had watched was made more special because two days later, her brother died. The crowd fell silent. I mean silent. You could hear a pin drop. The letter concluded, the fan was really looking forward to seeing the band again and that although her brother could not be there in body, he would be there in spirit. Thom folded the letter, put it in his back pocket and the band ended the night with Street Spirit. They played the song like they knew it was the most important thing that the girl would ever hear. It was perfect. They finished the song, put down their instruments and walked off stage. The crowd had no idea what to do. Cheer, cry, remain silent. When the lights went up, I would say 75% of the audience, including the girl I was with, where in floods of tears. I have seen literally thousands of bands play live and that one song remains the most memorable thing I have ever seen any band do.
What is really sad is that many people think they just did "Creep" and that's it.. They are really missing out alot. This band discography is just full of gem like this one.
Exactly bro this was basically me for my entire life (I’m 29) until like a year ago when I finally decided to properly check them out. I always figured they were just a decent rock band with several singles like Creep and Karma Police…had no idea that every single song they ever recorded is amazing lmao
It always frustrates me when reactors' only experience of Radiohead is Creep. I've seen them just react to that and move on, thinking they know what Radiohead is about. It was an early hit, but it's true, it's not one of their best, and even Radiohead didn't like to play it for a long time because they didn't feel it represented their sound anymore.
I view creep as a great entry point to the band , I slowly delved into their entire discography over many months and grew to love them more n more. Can honestly say I enjoy at least 50 of their tracks at this points, I also own the majority of their albums on vinyl now.
Kind of similar to Pink Floyd and their song Money. Although they had a few other songs that get radio air play. I honestly haven't heard anything else played by Radiohead on the radio other than Creep. My favorite album of their's is either Kid A or Amnesiac
Radiohead is the greatest band ever. Their worst songs are better than most bands best songs. Try ‘Pyramid Song’ or ‘Weird Fishes/Arpeggi’ next - both stunningly beautiful
and How To Disappear Completely and Like Spinning Plates and Life In A Glass House and Exit Music (For A Film) and Motion Picture Soundtrack and There There and Sit Down Stand Up and Reckoner and on and on and on. They have a bunch of pretty songs.
Wow i never gave radiohead a chance growing up but wow. This is perfect music for relaxing in a dark room on your beanbag. What you said at the end about death hits home more than you know. You cant change it vut accept it and enjoy what time you have left. But if you are given a new lease on life that gives you inspiration to enjoy as much as possible daily. Still trying to break out of my introvert life to try new things in life i would have never done with a morbid mentality i had for years. Some will know what im talking about, most wont.
"Street Spirit is our purest song, but I didn’t write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; it's biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn’t ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. Street Spirit has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It’s called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn’t play it. I’d crack. I’d break down on stage. That’s why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That’s what’s meant by ‘all these things you’ll one day swallow whole’. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn’t have it in me to articulate the emotion. I’d crack… Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don’t realise what they’re listening to. They don’t realise that Street Spirit is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he’ll get the last laugh. And it’s real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I’d crack. I can’t believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That’s why I’m convinced that they don’t know what it’s about. It’s why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you’re going to have your dog put down and it’s wagging its tail on the way there. That’s what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn’t picked us as its catalysts, and so I don’t claim it. It asks too much. I didn’t write that song." Thom Yorke
Well Thom,I have many demons through addiction but so many of your songs are so beautiful,I can stare the devil in the face and win now, thank God and Radiohead and Kate Bush!!!
No don't do the videos. It's purer without it. I know that some videos complement the song very well. But for a pure analysis I much more prefer it without the video!
Radiohead rabbithole goes deep. How to disappear completely is my absolute favorite and Thom York's as well. (The vocalist) Exit music is also a must. Talk show host and Reckoner are fantastic too.
You could line a wall with every Radiohead track, throw a dart and hit a beautifully crafted piece of sonic perfection. A few favorites of mine are "I Promise", "House of Cards" and "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi". But literally the entire albums _In Rainbows_ and _Kid A_ are incredible, front to back.
Fantastic choice in Radiohead song, it's been one of my favourites since it debuted (I used to watch music videos religiously in the 80's and 90's). They manage to make music that is both tragic and beautiful sounding in a way that's unparalleled.
Live, Jonny Greenwood(guitarists) plays the arpeggiated guitar part and at the same time plays the synth/string part on a keyboard using the headstock of his guitar.
Great reaction to my undisputed #1 Radiohead song! When this came out in 1995, it touched on such an emotional, almost spiritual level - absolute perfection! Anyone who feels that Radiohead is only 'Creep' is missing out! Their entire career is so varied, it's impossible to pigeonhole them. Keep it coming gents. Cheers.
Radiohead might just be one of the greatest bands EVER! Here in the UK their genre is "Indie" which comes from them being on an independent record label. It became a catch all term for the style of guitar music of Britain in the 90s. Fake Plastic Trees and The Bends are necessary trust me.
Great reaction, if you want to hear something truly immense and transcendent from Radiohead then you should check out ‘how to disappear completely’, it’s a must for any music fan / addict 😊
The National Anthem is great, an outer space hard groove that descends into jazz mayhem. Idioteque is an electronic banger. 2 songs that would give you a different but brilliant taste of Radiohead.
One of the most versatile, creative and free in their artistry band ever. There is so much to Radiohead, their capacity to create unique soundscapes is simply brilliant. And they were never afraid to explore and reinvent themselves. Great reaction
This is one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar. Radiohead was one of my favorite bands growing up, and it’s awesome seeing you guys cover them. Suggestion, please cover The National Anthem by them off their Kid A record. It’s unlike any other song of theirs and is amazing.
That's advanced picking for a first song. After playing a year ir twi i played this and remembered my dsd finally saying oh that sounds quite nice haha. Nirvana was my first songs!
12:35 the cracked eggs and dead birds screaming as they fight for life is a metaphor for the beginning and end of life, like a baby crying during it's birth and a man screaming while nearing death. the fighting part would be the chicks fighting to hatch from the eggs and the dead birds would be fighting for survival. fading in, contrast to fading out (the full cycle of life)
Great review! So glad you reacted to Street Spirit! I'm from England and remember hearing this song on the radio and being blown away. Off of the brilliant The Bends album which I bought straight away, then went into their Pablo Honey album. I rally haven't got a clue how this band had escaped me until that point. Seen them live several times since, they are epic in the flesh. One recommendation from their huge catalogue: Lucky - live Glastonbury 2003. It's how the song goes from 0 to 100mph seamlessly.
I'm not a big Radiohead fan. I can't get into their later more experimental stuff, but their first two albums have my favorite songs, this one, fake plastic trees, and creep.
I think of Radiohead as alternative/innovative. Their first album "Pablo Honey" they started from a batch of influences like 1980s noise rock/punk, The Pixies, R.E.M., etc. (basically, from the "first" alternative wave before grunge hit). But as each album proceeds, Radiohead evolved to the point by their third album OK Computer, and especially with 'Kid A" and 'In Rainbows' they were no longer taking influences from past alt bands and were themselves establishing where alternative music was going for others to keep up with. One thing to note is guitarist Jonny Greenwood is a great music composer (composed music for many films) and plays like 10 different instruments, so Radiohead's string arrangements and synthesizers are always on point!
Radiohead is magical, groundbreaking, spiritual, dark, uplifting. Seeing them live was transformative. I actually have the last line of Street Spirit (“immerse your soul in love”) tattooed on my shoulder. ❤️ So glad you did this one. Thank you. 😊
This song feels fairly haunting to me. I know Thom is supposed to be this unusual, discontented artist, and his lyrics here have some striking lines. Radiohead is an incredible band.
LET DOWN and 15 STEP. Radiohead do some styles you haven’t touched on yet. But they also have so many amazing songs that are ‘alternative rock’. Let Down from OK Computer is a beautiful, moving rock song. For something amazing and slightly different check out 15 Step from In Rainbows.
Great reaction! There are so many beautiful Radiohead songs, it's hard to think of just one or two to recommend. "True Love Waits" is a wonderful tearjerker and they released a beautiful, piano-accompanied version on their album Moon-Shaped Pool. "How to Disappear Completely" is also great, more of an unsettling vibe, and Thom Yorke really shows off how powerful his voice can be in that one. Looking forward to more reactions! :)
I would call Radio Head third wave prog rock. One of my favorite bands. Their live from the basement shows out there are magnificent. Totally worth a full listen and to see how they all play off of one another.
Love it when you guys get back to Radiohead. This one is an absolute classic. You can't go wrong with any of the songs from "The Bends" or "OK Computer" with their 90's era material. Even their debut "Pablo Honey" had great songs other than "Creep". They became much more experimental post 2000 and that's not a bad thing. They have always evolved and tried to do something different with every album like Bowie used to. "National Anthem", "Exit Music (For a Film)", "Subterranean Homesick Alien", "Just", "Nice Dream"...the list goes on dudes.
I love Radiohead! This song is profound.. lately that is how I have been associating their musical talents... so profoundly over the top! Thanks for another great reaction. Check out Thom and Jonny's side band "The Smile", they are creating some amazing music and I just feel like they are so absolutely under noticed and under appreciated for their musicianship and creative capabilities. They are definitely way way ahead of their time and their music will forever be in my heart.
Music is on my top four favorite drugs of all times. I have a plethora of reasons why I like music every day. One reason is I have tinnitus in both ears. So the music prevents me from hearing my tinnitus when I have on my headphones. This is another reason like to listen/watch rappers react music.😊 Because it's soothing to my ears And helps me forget about my tinnitus as well. But I've been high on music since I was a kid.. Thanks to my mom and sister and dad for introducing me to all kinds of great music over the years. Radiohead music reminds me of the music from the Deftones band. With that voice.😊😊😊❤❤🎉🎉
On the recent 1000 countdown of top songs from the 90’s on a New Zealand radio station; Radiohead - Paranoid Android reached #2, Smells like Teen Spirit number one
High and dry from the same album is one i think you guy will like. pyramid song is another atmospheric song, how to disappear completely, 2+2 make 5, idioteque, myxomatosis. Thom yorke's solo stuff is worth checking out too, like his live on jules holland performance of the clock (from the album The Eraser).
Radiohead is so hard to pin down, each album has its own sound and they implement so many different elements & instruments to give that unique sound for each album.
Yes, y’all did Paranoid Android off of Ok Computer, which was my suggestion. You’re welcome 😆😊 You also did Karma Police and No Surprises from that album. ‘Planet Telex’ and ‘Just’ are my favorites from this album (The Bends). ‘Just’ has a great video that will leave you hanging…
Despite always being more of a Hard-Rock, Metal, Hip-Hop and Drum n' Bass enjoyer i do love all kinds of Music (depending on the mood ofc)... about Radiohead above everything else (because i do like Radiohead music) all i can have for them is RESPECT! The first ever major band to release a direct album into the internet! You could pay whatever you wanted for the official album (from 0$ to Infinity$)! The best part of it? They didn't hald-assed it! They legit released one of their best albums ever "In Rainbows" that anyone with internet could legit get for free!... the album was legit and it turned out to be one of their most successful personal endevors! For that (and appart from their musical quality and talent) Radiohead will always have my respect!🤘❤️🤟
Radiohead-Tool-NIN album correlation: Pablo Honey - Opiate - Pretty Hate Machine The Bends - Undertow OK Computer - Aenima - The Downard Spiral I Might Be Wrong (Live) - Salival Kid A - Lateralus - The Fragile Amnesiac - The Slip Hail to the Thief - With Teeth In Rainbows - 10,000 Days -Year Zero In Rainbows B-sides - Broken The King of Limbs - Bad Witch A Moon Shaped Pool - Fear Inoculum - Hesitation Marks
This was the first Radiohead song I heard, back in the 90's on a freebe CD from Q magazine or somthing like that. Fell in love with it completely, and got the album. And all the others as they came out. In Ranbows is fabulous. But then they all are in their own way. You guys have a massive and brilliant catalogue to look forwards to! Cheers.
I’ve heard Tom thinks this is probably most depressing of their songs, to the point he doesn’t enjoy performing it. Music video is also nice, check it out.
You should try gems of Radiohead known only to the fans - two songs hidden in B album "In Rainbows": Go Slowly and Last Flowers. Both songs are short and simple, but maybe the most beautiful in entire of their catalogue.
Ruh oh.. just found you guys because I’m all about Radiohead and just bonded with how you’re speaking about this song. Now.. go check out In Rainbows then Amnesiac - both albums will blow your mind. And yes! Experimental and highly addictive is a great way to describe them.
As far as I can interpret, this song is about someone who has lost all hope, and is leaving advice to someone else to "immerse yourself in love". He's saying that while you're alive, find love any way you can.
This song always makes my eyes water. It's sad, peaceful, beautiful, melodic, it's just amazing. Oh and check out the real music video for this, trust me.
This was the song that got me into Radiohead. I saw it on mtv late at night a few times (great video, weird as expected) and just had to find out who the band was. It’s still my favourite album of theirs (The Bends) And Fake Plastic Trees is still one of my all time tracks ever x😊
The 'Street Spirits' are referring to those who have taken their own lives. This song is coming from the perspective of a suicidal person and what led them to do such a thing.. Hauntingly beautiful.
I love zillions of bands and artists and genres but no one tops Radiohead since I first heard OK Computer in college....that was it....and this is coming from someone who's next 3 favorite artists are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pink Floyd, and A Tribe Called Quest. So if I can find my way to love this band I am not surprised you all are digging them. 9 albums still going...waiting on #10....def good music for drugs :) - as for their genre, they change their sound on every album, it is one of their things so its hard - they started out as a banging 3 guitar attack (love 3 guitar bands)with bassist and drums, same 5 guys who started still together to this day - but they evolved into electronica, jazz, like always pushing boundaries...so their genre, and this isn't just being a homer fan, they are in the "Radiohead" genre cause they are in their own lane. That is def true for other bands as well. But I guess I'd say Alt-Rock Experimental Electronic Psychedelic (?????). Once you get hooked it is done. I hope you keep testing the waters - this song is off their 2nd album and is the closer and what a powerful album closer - depending on what phase of their 30 year journey the song you choose is from - 2 things are for sure, one it will be amazing BUT maybe throw you off on first listen as they don't care about travelling to many different unusual places, and 2 it is always well written with Thom's voice and lyrics and the band is Top Notch and their producer is incredible so they sound incredible regardless if the tune grabs you at first - check them out live, they are as good as it gets. Thanks, you guys are awesome always. Peace //
The Bends is my favorite Radiohead album - peak songwriting in that record, incredibily emotional and beautiful but still a bit angry and passionate. Their later, more experimental stuff might be "better" musically but as songs the ones in here are almost all perfect.
Art Rock and Alternative Rock is what Radiohead is mostly called. But they mix things up and go into a more experimental or electronic music on some albums. Radiohead music is Radiohead music. I immediately know it's Radiohead.
Fuck, I wouldn't be able to perform this song after reading a letter like that to the audience.
I'd just break down in the middle.
What is really sad is that many people think they just did "Creep" and that's it.. They are really missing out alot. This band discography is just full of gem like this one.
Which is wild because it's not even one of their better songs.

Radiohead is the greatest band ever. Their worst songs are better than most bands best songs. Try ‘Pyramid Song’ or ‘Weird Fishes/Arpeggi’ next - both stunningly beautiful
The only band that can compete with them or even surpass them is Depeche Mode
and How To Disappear Completely and Like Spinning Plates and Life In A Glass House and Exit Music (For A Film) and Motion Picture Soundtrack and There There and Sit Down Stand Up and Reckoner and on and on and on. They have a bunch of pretty songs.
As a Tool fan who's just recently become a Radiohead fan too, I think you guys should check out more of them!
Fake plastic trees, weird fishes, paranoid android. I could go on...
@@VeteranHedonistNo Surprises, High and Dry, Exit music (for a flim) my Iron lung, Jigsaw Falling into place, Karma Police.
Yesssss! I thought I was the only person that put Tool and Radiohead in the same uncategorised category of music. Just file under Mmmmmmm nice. 😊
nude, you, let down
Wow i never gave radiohead a chance growing up but wow. This is perfect music for relaxing in a dark room on your beanbag. What you said at the end about death hits home more than you know. Since Thom doesnt know where it came from, maybe some listeners understand it and he's wrong.... or there could be multiple valid meanings..
Well Thom,I have many demons through addiction but so many of your songs are so beautiful,I can stare the devil in the face and win now, thank God and Radiohead and Kate Bush!!!
Thom Yorke never said this, it's purely apocryphal
Except he actually did.

No don't do the videos. It's purer without it. I know that some videos complement the song very well. But for a pure analysis I much more prefer it without the video!
I have been searching for this for hours. This song has pulled me through depression and a whole lot more. Very glad you reacted.

an absolute timeless and meaningful classic
Radiohead’s entire catalogue is good in my opinion. They’re super talented artists. Would love to see more from them!
that was the perfect voice for that song, any other voice just wouldn't have had the same impact. Awesome !
I recall this video being on the charts back in January 1995.
The National Anthem is great, an outer space hard groove that descends into jazz mayhem.
Idioteque is an electronic banger. 2 songs that would give you a different but brilliant taste of Radiohead.

Love those bands that just have that X- Factor like Radiohead, Tool, Massive Attack. My favourite Radiohead song, Burn the Witch.
Such a great song. His voice is amazing.

"How to Disappear Completely" is also great, more of an unsettling vibe, and Thom Yorke really shows off how powerful his voice can be in that one. Looking forward to more reactions! :)
Gives me goose bumps every time I listen to this song
I loved this in the 90’s not long divorced, it kinda worked for me.
Still know all the words. Sigh
Love it when you guys react to one of my favourite bands. Even if you dont do a video for it you should listen to their In Basement set.
I've always loved listening to Radio Head's music.

Echobelly - Dark Therapy, another indie rock classic in the same vein from 1995.
Cheers.
You are right, their music is mind altering, just like drugs🥰
Thom's voice moves me like no other
They dabble in different genres. Jazz, acid jazz, metal, punk, experimental, blues...ppl usually consider them to be alternative rock
I have literally muttered "Got dayum, that was beautiful " many times while listening to RH. In Rainbows is still my fav of theirs.
Thank you! I love Radiohead!! Do "Talk Show Host" next!
Y'all need to sample this for a dope beat! Thanks for the reaction 🤘
You NEED to see the video for this. It's as amazing as the song is
Immerse your soul in love…
They do I live version of this that is acoustic. It's one of the best vocal performances I have ever seen and makes me tear up every time.
My favorite Radiohead song! Thanks for checking it out ❤
Radiohead Recommends:
“No Surprises”, “Let Down” or “High and Dry”
I remember them doing No Surprises
@@metalguru85 hard to keep track anymore. 😆 thanks!
I’ve heard Tom thinks this is probably most depressing of their songs, to the point he doesn’t enjoy performing it. Music video is also nice, check it out.
I love this song so fricken much. Thanks for reacting to it.
Thank you on your reaction ♥️ gretest from Croatia
My fave Radiohead song, gorgeous! ❤
I love the passion in your reactions so much ❤
Love the way you guys feel the music!
A random array of some of my favourite songs of Radiohead
(Nice dream)
Lucky
Idioteque
Life in a Glasshouse
A wolf at the door
Bodysnatchers
Apart from the suggestions from The Bends already mentioned, check out Bones and High and Dry
The 'Street Spirits' are referring to those who have taken their own lives. This song is coming from the perspective of a suicidal person and what led them to do such a thing.. Hauntingly beautiful.
Hollywood, pleeeeaaaase. Your blood by Nothing but thieves. 🙏🏼
😄
Great reaction guys! I feel the same way as you both about Radiohead! I would recommend Queens of the Stoneage- I appear Missingl- Live 4K
Have y'all checked out Portishead yet? I'd recommend Wandering Star from them
Art Rock and Alternative Rock is what Radiohead is mostly called. But they mix things up and go into a more experimental or electronic music on some albums. Radiohead music is Radiohead music. I immediately know it's Radiohead.
I just love Radioed forever ❤
It doesn't matter when I die. Because I'm gonna continue to work out either way so I can live my best and strongest life while I'm alive. 😊💪🎧
You should do True Love Waits from the I Might Be Wrong Live Recordings set.
You boys are the opposite of trash talkers, great reaction :D
I would give radiohead its own genre called chill metal.😊
They don’t have any metal songs
