Why are you using a vacuum on your internals!? NEVER use a vacuum as it creates static electricity that can short out components.

That's a nice server! I used an older PowerEdge 2950 III (2x E5420, 32GB RAM) to host my public MC server in 2013-2017. I would have used it for longer but I didn't have a dedicated room for it anymore and it's way too loud to run in my room, and there wasn't really any players left on the server anyway.
Sadly the days of being able to start a successful MC server just by posting on forums and youtube are long gone, at least here in Finland. If I started a new server today I'd get less players than in 2012 when I started mine even though at start it was Hamachi only. Most Finnish servers that still have players are owned by big youtubers.

I just use a regular PC with NAS storage drives for file servers and game server hosting. It might not be as powerful, but it works for my needs. I probably shouldn't use windows for that, but i do because I'm too lazy to install ubuntu server, and everything works currently. I love how I use ubuntu on my pc, but use windows 10 for a server lol.
Tip for hosting a server (if you have multiple worlds/plugins you want to switch between):
you can make a file server, and make your minecraft server drive available to the network so you can change the world files from another device from the file explorer. you can also use ssh to stop/start your server remotely (i'm assuming you knew that). I use a network drive to host my minecraft server for my friends, and its very easy to add/remove plugins and change the world file from spigot via windows explorer or an smb drive on linux. I also use windows remote desktop for checking the console and starting the server. ssh works too.

What’s the average total wattage you’re pulling with that thing during normal operation?
Always wanted to try something like this, but with the energy crisis, power ain’t getting cheaper, and I live in a fairly warm climate, so air conditioning is already inflating my electric bills.

@@dannylu7235 Plug another one to your switch to your ipmi and give it a static IP so you can remotely access its settings and health thru IDRAC.
Personally I would put proxmox and virtualize Ubuntu and create a homelab with lots of services, maybe do pterodactyl or like multicraft inside a Ubuntu VM.
Do reverse proxy so your port isn't exposed if you have lots of people accessing ur mc server or whatever.

  • @884tomato

I did that once too but without buying the hardware (Renting for 40$/month). But I setup a raw server, booted linux, installed the server etc. The only thing I always wondered is: If you have that much power on a server (I hade a Ryzen 3600, 64 G RAM, 2 TB NVME Storage) what is actual the perfect config server and linux-wide to setup. I never found an actual step-by-step tutorial on why you have to use this and that on a minecraft server to get the least lagg possible. I know Java has a bunch of issues and I know there are mods and ways to counter that. But I don't know the specific ones and how they actual function. I'm not an IT guy either, so I hope one day there will be an actual expert of e.g. hypixel server staff, that explains how everything works.

    • @dannylu7235
      @dannylu7235  ปีที่แล้ว

That's a good point, I do think there's a point where you get diminishing returns on performance. Like in my video I allocate 64G of RAM to this server which probably isn't going to make a difference or even make the performance worse at some point. As far as I can tell there's no clear cut way to determine configs. You'd probably have to do benchmarking tests or use tools to measure memory/cpu usage and tune your configs from there. I'm not expert though so this is my best guess on how you'd even approach that.

@@dannylu7235 I'd love to talk to experts about that. Like java junk collection, which server jar performs the best in what scenarios (e.g. fabric server with mods like sodium, starlight, phosphor, lithium, krypton if you want vanilla, paper if you want to use generic server mods, and so on) I know that allocating more ram than needed to a client is usually bad due to java junk collection (but idk how exactly it works) but at the same time surely minecraft develops itself into a more performant version...hopefully right :D

Also if you want the server to use mainly as a minecraft server, I would put the server.jar file as a service you know?
so that it automaticaly starts the server once the server boots up

Complete the circle and run your own type 1 hypervisor with Proxmox like @Jēkabs said and you can have the best of both worlds as you will learn how to operate type 1 hypervisors. perhaps practice load sharing and failovers between multiple hypervisors and it just simplifies a lot of things down the line

Minecraft is single threaded so you’re not taking advantage of all of the cores on that giant server, it’s like Grandma asking you to plant small flowers in her garden, and then an hour later you roll up in an excavator.
