Nobody talks about Manu like they do John Bohnam, Keith Moon, Danny Carey, etc, but this was a sort of complicated drumming pattern to be appreciated. Gabriel did well without Phil Collins.
On recording one if the best funkiest rhythm tracks ever. Here, Omar is giving a ridiculously good rendition of the feel, the bass drum has a million subtle almost inaudible hits that I cant believe anyone can do and not detract from the studio version. The music is really clever to me, I wish I would have wrote this one. I was expecting it to be much worse.

Ok,l love Peter G, but seriously you should've had the sistas doing the background vocals!!!!!! Your voice with theirs was pure magic, and it sounds better!!!!!
I have a list of complaints too, but I have a since of humor about it, check this version of Big Time Remixed by Sickayda Mars, It's different, but it's still the original song. th-cam.com/video/YXUwofaZ5ts/w-d-xo.html
Love PG to death! But the real star in this clip is David, who swappes from a Les Paul to a Telecaster and back quite a few times...without missing a beat ;)
Oh dear... His voice has gone. While hitting the tone occasionally, its done. I've loved this man since I first heard him sing. Incredibly talented. A signature voice! Talented song writer! Leave us always wanting more Peter. Time to retire. Love you always!
Loved this from the MTV days. Now, years later, about 2 days ago I thought of it and here I am. One reason I love this great, unique song is that, and I am no musician so please forgive me, the instrumentation sounds as if it is in opposition to the singing, made for a completely different song yet this is what has great appeal for me. Does anyone else think this and if so, does this"effect" have a term to describe it????
Maybe you're hearing that Peter is slightly ahead of the beat in this version Funk music generally lays back in the beat and of course live versions are generally faster in tempo If you look up "playing in the pocket" it might help?
No, I can't. It sounds great to me - very well played. But of course its not going to sound just like the record, and it's also going to be impacted by whatever was in the air on this one particular night.
I was expecting worse,I am pretty particular about recreating detrimental things live, but as someone who has played all the instruments to this song, I dont think it can be done better live unless you recreate in automation fashion, sequence it all, I would like to see more trueness to the song in that respect.
not much of a song, and i grew up with it and am a Peter Gabriel fan. the bass (synth & guitar) is pretty cool, but i've watched REALLY carefully 3 times, and i can't see how Tony got his funk fingers on and off so quickly. maybe this is another one of those live performances that they actually rerecorded a lot in the studio later
What I can't stand is when they splice together a song from different shows. You can see the guitar player is playing a Les Paul at the beginning of the video and then all of the sudden he's playing a Fender. It's possible he switched guitars but I really doubt that. He was playing the whole time. Yes and Tony Levin putting the bass down after he's playing with plastic tubes on his fingers. I wanted to hear more of that.
+cnucklz09 The plastic tubes are his "funk fingers" - I always thought it was a pair of cut down drumsticks, but I could be wrong... Great player regardless though.
Sorry guys. I had to thumbs down this. Tony putting down his bass and moving to keys is thumbs down worthy though IMO. It's all about that bass. Don't put it down.
I have to agree, when you have a great bass like a musicman stingray, why not use it. There is also something strange going on with David Rhodes guitar. One minute it's a musicman, the next it's a gibson
I'm pretty sure the crowd was cheering because it was over. I love Peter Gabriel but this song sucks live. The other live versions I've heard on here are pretty geed too.
That was a strong performance. Gabriel's vocals sounded great but Manu Katché really had some great, crackling fills in there.
Nobody talks about Manu like they do John Bohnam, Keith Moon, Danny Carey, etc, but this was a sort of complicated drumming pattern to be appreciated. Gabriel did well without Phil Collins.
Stewart Copeland was the drummer on the album version - hard to cover
Absolute killer bass line! Love this, then and now...
Agreed, "goosebump" performance. I can't get enough of Tony Levin and David Sancious 🔥
All hail Mr. Levin and his Funk Fingers!
I'm here to see those funky fingers in action
Had a pair in the late 80's . Not easy to do but fun
He is amazing
Loves this song since i was 10! Soon turning 30! PG is for everyone in every age.
I became 30 on August 2nd and that's so true. Every song for every age. Thank you, Martin.
Мне 59..И я тоже шокирован текстом и музыкой этой песни ...Возраст-не показатель,дело в душе..Жму твою руку брат!!
Peter is a bad old man doing his thang you go boy!🤗🕺💕
My favorite Peter Gabriel song
Kudos to Peter. His voice is amazing still.
I’m late to the party but this is freaking awesome. Sounds great
Mr.Tony Levin...El Magnífico bajo......maestro......
We love you too much Peter such a beautiful big raspy voice!, UK 💖🎄😍😍
How can anyone not like this.. I mean it's BIG T--TIME!!
Good performance. Gabriel sounds great -
Mr Manu Katche in drums is my favourite drummer

You probably mean Manu (Katche) instead of Omar (Hakim ?).
That is not Omar Hakim on the drums. It’s Manu Katché, Peter’s studio and live drummer since 1985.
Tony L. Tremendo. & Peter G. El genio de siempre. Qué envidia jajajajaja
My 9 ball nickname is "Big Time" for my shot making.
Love this song...ready to break and run out...again !
How funky is that synth bass line during the verses? Subterranean. Fonky!
+Brilliantbeing Yeah That's Tony Levin one of the best bassplayers around
It looks like he’s busting that out on a moog. I want to know what sound patch that is...anyone?
@@davidanania5618 looks like a Nord to me. But if I had to guess on the album he used a Moog Source. He used one a lot back then
Great musician, great songs, great entertainer

Amazing performance. Just inspired me.
Pure fun XD favorite song off "So" and my favorite live performance of the song, as well: Peter still has it made!!
Sounds Great. The bass makes this song !
I found out about this song because the WWE licensed it for Wrestlemania 22 and played it so much I fell in love with it.
Same thing for me actually, since then I’ve become a huge Genesis and Peter Gabriel fan!

Tony Levin is the best. Seeing him with Belou and Vai this fall...
Big Peter!!!
Marriage of funk, R&B and rock
So much larger than life.
I’ve seen PG play this song with three drummers. And it only grooves the right way with Manu Katché behind the kit.
Que lindas estan las coristas!!

EXCELLENT !!!!!
Wrestlemania 22 one of the best WM songs :)
Hannibal Lecter is killing it as Peter Gabriel's new front man!!
I thought it was Alexi Sayle!
Say what you will....my gut tells me these rather obvious and simplistic lyrics have a much, much deeper meaning
Great response. I agree....
It's definitely a satire of the excesses of the 80s. Materialism, Thatcherism, and the over the top lifestyles of people like Trump.

Oh wow Hank Schrader went to this concert.
you can kind of see why peter gabriel doesnt perform this...
its the most commercial song he ever recorded. so it jars with his back catalog which is very socially aware. so he doesnt perform it very often.
No, I can't. It sounds great to me - very well played. But of course its not going to sound just like the record, and it's also going to be impacted by whatever was in the air on this one particular night.
