You only really understand this song after you have sung it with all your new friends, live and in concert with Peter. It affects the rest of your life.
I saw Peter Gabriel in 1985 on his tour following the release of his 4th album. The last song he sang was "Biko". When the lights went up, no one left the theatre...just a sea of flames from lighters. Incredible experience. One of a kind.
I walked right past the man at a Womad festival in Reading ounce not noing that it was him my brother said do you know who that was after the fact that he would now what the man looks like. given to the fact anyway a chance missed to give the big man a hug.
This song always reminds me of where we come from as blacks. I am happy generations to come will know that the freedom of South Africa was received at a cost. I am a South Africa. I salute those who caught for the democracy. The fight is not over!
We need this song in 2022 as much as we needed it when Peter wrote it. As many western democracies shift to the extreme right and strip away human rights, the life and spirit of Stephen Biko must inspire us all to fight injustice & stand up for those who cannot.
This song made me cry the first time I heard it, it still does every time. Love transcendes hate, Biko will be remembered far longer than those who murdered him.
I get goosebumps and cry when I hear it. Especially the end. Makes me remember when I saw him and he left the stage but the audience still stood in solidarity against hate.
Mandela laughs! His heart is finally full of joy as he listens to Youssu N'Dour and Peter Gabriel! And I feel the same as you, Brother Doug - even after 30 years this song makes me cry and tears wet my cheeks ... (and reading the many comments of many friends I discover that we are not alone! This song, these words they are so powerful as to push anyone with a heart to tears ...!) This is the Art of Love! You are great, Peter!
„You can blow out a candle, but you can‘t blow a fire Once the flame begin to catch, the wind will blow it higher!“ Best line ever! Sad but true! I hope and fear it at the same time!
Peter, the musician, the intellectual, the person who is committed to human rights and much more - I have great respect for him! He's just Peter the Great !!
To those of you who are younger. This song may have ended apartheid. This song made the west notice what was happening in south africa. Peter Gabriel likely changed the world for the better with a song. How beautiful is that
I went to this tour in Glasgow.I was ready for leaving but I heard the first few chords of this masterpiece I would honestly say I watched him perform it but I didn’t cos of the tears flowing down my cheeks, but I heard it loud and clear.Let this song be a world Anthem please.RIP Biko you are a hero to millions of US who have been mistreated by the so called law.Love and Peace to all who agree ❤❤❤❤
16 dislikes? What are they looking in a song? This is arguably the most important song of the last 50 years. It had the effect to help change a nations way of thinking.

Peter Gabriel has repeatedly shown in his career how talented he was and still is. I recall having a computer game he designed years ago. Wish I could find it. My younger sister also used some of his music during the birth of her first child.
This video doesn’t even show in the slightest what it feels like to experience this song live. I saw Peter Gabriel in Berlin open air last year and I still get the chills when I think about it. The light makes it feel like you’re standing in front of a burning building with thousands of people protesting, chanting and punching their fists in the air for peace.
I saw this performed at the Human Rights Now concert in 1998, Amnesty Int' celebrating the Declaration of Human Rights. Apartheid was still in place and the audience response for this song was huge and emotional, but today we still need this, still need reminding that all lives matter, especially the historically oppressed. It's not good enough to say everyone's now equal when any population still live in poverty under consistent pervasive discrimination.
Biko Biko Biko because Biko! RIP Mr Stephen Biko! Please if you can assist humanity to grow together not apart! We trust your in a peaceful place watching over us! Guiding us with your light! It’s insanity that people just don’t get it that life itself is colourful so why should one’s colour be a factor of how beautiful we are in every colour & ethnicity! ✌️❤️🌎💋
It should make you happy. Biko changed the world. Peter Gabriel through this song woke the rest of us up. And changed the world. It took a hero.. and a song.
Einmalig!
No need for privilege checking... This is straight from the heart for all brothers and sisters around the world.. We're all the same no matter what skin colour... Peace and love people. xx

A great song, I heard it first time on the Nelson Mandela Concert 1988 in London, Peter sang it toghter with the Simple Minds! Thank you very much for uploading. And tbe best: You did upload it in 5.1 Sound!!! That's great. Only a few of all the million videos here on TH-cam have real 6 Channel Audio.
Biko is not a song, it's an international anthem against racism. That unite us.
Said someone who is ancestor of this all scums which conqured half of planet. Yeah, he is simbol of freedom!!!
You only really understand this song after you have sung it with all your new friends, live and in concert with Peter.
It affects the rest of your life.
Again...a timeless tune with universal lyrics. Unfortunately, still there are young people risking their lives for our freedom. Love it so much.

Most likely it was the "So" tour. If it was the 4th album that would be 1982/83
This song always reminds me of where we come from as blacks. I am happy generations to come will know that the freedom of South Africa was received at a cost. I am a South Africa. I salute those who caught for the democracy. The fight is not over!
Chills every time.
This song is my private Candlelight.
Biko ...Still in our hearts in 2020................
Agreed!!!!
Still on my heart in 2021. I was upset because a person I know is in South Africa, and had no clue who Steven Biko was/is
@@carriehamilton324 Then tell them of the man , of his history , tell them of is life , educate them to what he gave his life for.
Still in mine 2021. Afghan's are the Biko's of our world now
Peter is one of my favorite artists ever!
Couldn't agree with you more. The spirit of music lives in us!
Bring the voice of every soul on the world
Ich kann mich von diesem Song nicht trennen; Peter Gabriel ist einzigartig und begleitet mich mit Euphorie mein Leben lang!
Ich konnte ihn bei der letzten Tournee live erleben, einfach nur super.
We need this song in 2022 as much as we needed it when Peter wrote it. As many western democracies shift to the extreme right and strip away human rights, the life and spirit of Stephen Biko must inspire us all to fight injustice & stand up for those who cannot.
The extreme left does the same thing.
This song made me cry the first time I heard it, it still does every time. Love transcendes hate, Biko will be remembered far longer than those who murdered him.
you never walk alone, crying while this song plays
I get goosebumps and cry when I hear it. Especially the end. Makes me remember when I saw him and he left the stage but the audience still stood in solidarity against hate.

i cry. you will never be alone. billions feel the pain. love is strong. i cry.

One of THE most powerful songs ever created, performed! Love, LOVE PG!!!!!
Peter is such an amazing performer. I'd have loved to seen this show in person.
Peter Gabriel is a legend.
Banu Stephen Biko lives in the hearts of those of us who fight injustice, racism, & police brutality the world over. #rememberhisname
Hail all the brave soldiers of human rights everywhere, marching on to advancement and human progression....
Still a song that resonates to this day.
Peter Gabriel rocks.
If ever a performance made one emotional it is this by Mr Gabriel . Makes you realise just how under appreciated yet admired he is
PG was my very first concert 6/19/93 @ Worcester Centrum in Worcester, MA. It is still the best concert out of the 100s of concerts I have seen.
Same year for me, in D.C. Top 5 shows I've ever seen, and I've been to literally hundreds before and after it as well.
The eyes of the world
are watching now

To those of you who are younger. This song may have ended apartheid. This song made the west notice what was happening in south africa.
Peter Gabriel likely changed the world for the better with a song.
How beautiful is that
The song certainly brought the issue of apartheid to light for many.
The TEARS.......This song touches my Soul...I just wish he didn't have to Die......
The Man may have passed on BUT his memory , his struggle will never be forgotten..........

BEAUTIFUL
This is close to a religious experience as you can get. The song is powerful and this performance is beyond words.
Try reading the bible!
But this is some of the secular music the lord loves. I mean darn he did start a band named genesis!
Wonderful. Let us remember. All men and women are created equal.
Thank you for sharing this very inspirational song and presentation. Surely helps us to see the value and the meaning of life. God bless everyone
