    I am a kindergarten teacher and you can imagine how noisy 5 or 6 years olds can be ;-) At the beginning of the school year we made a rule ( a kind of a game actually) : when my kids are too noisy or when I just want to make them quiet or say something, I just raise my hand. Kids who can see it, raise their hands too and get quiet. After a while all kids stay still with their hands up :-) At the beginning I counted from one to ten, twelve or even more to see how much time they need to see me with my hand up. Now they can do it before I say five. It really works :-)

    As a current teacher student I wish I had you as a mentor rather than the ones I've been assigned. On my teaching practices the usual thing I ask my mentors for is simple concrete advice and guidance for how I can be in better control of the classroom when I teach (body language etc), but they never give me any good answers for that and just later complain about how I'm lacking in teaching body language and confidence. Had they just given me the advice I asked for I could have easily improved myself!

    • @etacude
      @etacude  4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      That's exactly the way I felt when I was studying to become a teacher. I felt alone and angry that my mentors and lecturers at university never shared any practical advice that we so desperately needed. When asked they would say:"Just get better." 😵
      Now I want to try and share some ideas through this channel. I hope it is useful to some people watching. If you have any questions or videos you would like to see don't hesitate to ask!

    Thank you, golden advice!
    Also, I remembered that our teachers used to use simple clapping tunes to calm the class down. The teacher claps, students repeat and there is a certain pattern to which you can't clap and have to say "Don't clap this one back". Everyone calmed down instantly and it was fun))

      Hi Maria, thank you for your kind words. Your situation sounds tough with difficult students. Just try to remember - Deep down they really want a teacher they can trust and can lead them. Perhaps their whole lives they have been disappointed with people who gave up on them. Therefore they "test" teachers to make sure they are good. Be strong, pass the "tests" and become a leader to these students. Good luck!

    One thing I like to do is during a paired or group activity, when students are talking amongst themselves, I kneel down to a student so that I can hear them or help them out when they need it. This way I get better eye contact with them, but also so that I am not all towering over them.

    Hey Eric,
    Excellent work. You’ve helped me immensely as a teacher.
    One issue o had yesterday with eye contact was you a student who refused to break eye contact. I held the eye contact, but the class noticed and began to laugh. I asked the student if they needed help, if something was wrong. It took a few moments until eventually I told the student that they were now disturbing the class. Then they looked away, but it was a challenging situation. I was a very defiant young man, and I can imagine coming across an older student who, in the wrong mood, will absolutely refuse to break eye contact. Resulting in a power struggle. How do we defuse this?

    • @etacude
      @etacude  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Keep it for a while - smile - to show that you are unafraid and move on. Treat them as normal. Ask to quickly see them after class.
      Ask them if they are okay - they seemed to be upset about something. Smile. Try to create rapport and build your relationship.
      Hope this helps, Christie! 😊

    How long it will take to build confidence of students towards a teacher?

    • @etacude
      @etacude  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's a good question Sahan. Without training and a proper idea of how students' minds work it would take perhaps 3 or 4 years to get confident.
      But if you can learn from someone who can prepare and teach you well it could take 6 ~ 18 months.
      That is just my guess. But one thing is sure, having a good mentor will make life a lot easier and quicker to become confident.
