FreeCAD Project / Attach Sketches Traces and Logos onto Curved Surfaces. 3 Ways including parametric

- We explore three ways to place your sketch onto a uneven or curved surface using projection through either the part workbench or curves workbench or by unwrapping the surface on the curves workbench in FreeCAD. In this demonstration I use a SVG file containing a logo created in inkscape and use this to project it as a face onto a curved surface or uneven face. We learn how to wrap this around spheres and cylinder and experiment with unwrapping a face of an object to sketch directly upon.

"Sketch on surface" seems extremely useful for working with curved faces.

At around 35:08 you note that the Sketch on Surface tool is unusable for extruded BSpline Surfaces (because of the way they are parameterized 0-1 in the BSpline direction, length in the extrusion direction). This is no longer the case for current versions of the Curves workbench - both directions are mapped to lengths. So it now is usable...

Thanks for your kind comments, great to hear your enjoying them. I think it might of been yourself asking for some videos of modelling from the ground up in this workbench? I'm quite a way through the series but I realised I haven't done any long play modelling using all of this together as of yet. My first one should be out this week, if not it will be next. Didn’t show a way to project a logo using the sketch map method. I only found a way to import external geometry. Copying an external sketch does not always work, for example, when the external sketch has been moved or rotated. There was an idea to replace the map sketch with another sketch - it causes the error "Failed to get the face support of the sketch". Are there other ways?

Yep wow, in some ways FreeCAD is more powerful than other CAD programs. Kind of wish there was an align tool thou
Are you looking at aligning in the sketcher or aligning in the part / part design workbench? May be able to help you there.

About the projections, I have a question: I'm looking for a method to bend a perforated sheet around a surface in the CAD model (as if it had been bent with the bender after punching). The SketchOnSurface tool seems to me to be just the right method if I then simply draw the punch-outs in the sketch of the modeled surface, or am I understanding this wrong?
Is there a simple method to distribute regular patterns of e.g. hexagons on a sketch (something like the PolarPattern in PartDesign), or is it faster to import this as DXF from another CAD program?

Ah great to see your enjoying them. Yes sketch on surface world be the way to go with a sketch and you can do it a number of ways. Use the sketcher or import the file from a external 2d source as you said and use sketch on surface using the external object property.
I am not very understanding the box selection usage in 4:14, is it used to accommodate the path of 882 & 886 in deleting them?
This was indeed informative with sufficient useful methods. I still have a question though. Instead of projecting entire object, can we just project a specific edge of that object? Because doing so will be extremely helpful in modelling hood vents of cars?
Yes Instead of the selecting the face from the part project just select the edges and that will project onto the model

Thank you for this. Is there a way to merge the projection onto the face so it becomes a single object (handy for FEM work in a specific location) or does this fall under Boolean fragments? (Oh and enjoy your coffee :P)
You would need to boolean both by selecting both of them and using a union or cut in the part workbench. And thank you for your kind donation 😀👍
@@MangoJellySolutions Thank you. I suddenly felt like I was buying an answer which wasn't the case BTW it was a thank you for a great video regardless. We need more like this considering how bloody awful FreeCAD UI/usability is. I recently had to Google how to move a part as I'd forgotten (just use it for FEM work these days) which pretty much sums it up. (I know I know small team working for nothing but we all know what happens when you let Devs lead design and user flow :P)
I wish I knew how to create an SVG file to import.
You can create one in inkscape which is a free vector design program like Adobe illustrator

That bit where you're having to game FreeCAD into selecting just the edges of a wire before projecting it is a classic example of just how ridiculous FreeCAD's UI is sometimes.
Edit to add more negativity: precisely none of this works in the RealThunder branch of FreeCAD, at least in the way I'm trying to do it.
