I am new to longarm quilting and many quilters use zippers. So I got the zippers and canvas to make some leaders. This videos is helping me understand how to make them. I got instructions with my zippers but they were a little difficult for me to understand especially sewing the zippers on with my long arm.
This answers unknown questions about replacing my leaders! I know later in life I will need this video when the time comes to replace them and adding zippers to them! I assumed you had to purchase the leaders and zippers, I had no idea I could make my own! Making them seems easy enough! I can't thank you enough for the video!
@@TheQuiltedPoodle Another question please, when you are finished quilting, quilt is off the frame, what do you do with your leaders? Roll them on the bars?
Never underestimate the power of a woman on a mission! I've been wanting to do something like this. Glad I stumbled upon you. Great tutorial. I have a smaller setup but do make larger quilts (queen and king). I don't have red snappers so will use heavy cording. It definitely would be much simpler to pin the quilt to the shorter piece of the zipper portion. I think the only thing I would do differently would be to put 2 zipper heads on and zip from the center out. I've saved your video for future reference. Fantastic tutorial.
This a great video, but for a newbie to quilt frames and leaders, I ran into a few roadblocks. I purchased the supplies. My canvas came with the short ends folded over and hemmed. I do not know if I’m suppose to cut it off and serge it or leave it. In the beginning of the video the edges were serge. I serged my raw edge and added the tape. I then noticed that the raw edges that were serge had been turned under before the tape was added. I know that it’s hard to make video that everyone is going to understand and that people who are experts at what they do don’t always think about the tiny things that very beginners focus on. I very much appreciate the video being made and I will figured it out. I am glad I discovered you and your great videos.
Thank you for this video. I was so inspired I made my first leader cloths. I actually ordered outdoor canvas I found on clearance at 80% off. They are so pretty too!
i love this ! I am on a Cutie hoop tabletop Frame and use a much smaller leader. I also used drop cloth I sewed my long arm zipper 1/2 on to mine and then I stitch the other half onto my backing :) thank you this is very helpful
Sorry, im new to quilting and just ordered a frame and not the leaders. I was asking about the velcro that was stuck on the frame. Im guessing you purchased the sew in type of hook and loop and did not need the sticky type
Excellent idea! I just went for the "quick & dirty." I love using my longarm as a big sewing machine, not just a quilting machine. I've since made another set of zipper leaders that went much faster. I only sit a single pass of sewing the zipper to the leaders. Center to the right end & center to the left end. I hope you will give it a try.
The length depends on the length of the leader. I wanted to have at least 5" extra zipper length on both ends. I ordered longarm zippers from Amazon so the zipper teeth were the correct size. It really doesn't matter, I'm just always trying to find new uses for this big sewing machine . . . I'm a little crazy like that, I just Made a video for the grace company summer camp using my longarm to make frisbees for my dog. I used to make them on my domestic sewing machine, But I wanted to give it a try period it worked wonderfully.
Hello! Is the fabric laying wrong side up, on top of the right side of the zipper? It looked like when you unzipped it later that the zipper pull was from the bottom. Also, where did the little skinny strips come from and what are their measurements ? I’m very new to using a frame. I actually have new leaders, so I guess I did not have to sew the wide strips. I guess? I did it anyway. Now I really need help. 😢
I'm on a table top hoop frame ...I'm thinking about using hook and loop tape for my back bar leader..So how did you attach the hook and loop tape to your rail ? double stick tape?
@@kynurse67that’s a really good question; I was wondering the same thing! I sure hope she answers. IDK, I can’t picture it wd be possible to just turn the extra piece around; it doesn’t seem like it wd work. 😬
Good Question. If I had purchased the material from a fabric store, that probably would have been in the description; however, the canvas I purchased on Amazon was simply repurposed painter's Duck Dropcloth, described as being impervious to paint spills. It is a truly nice, heavy material that you can expect to last for quite some time. I found it to be a heavier weight than what I have purchased from JoAnn's described as "Duck cloth" when I was making a utility bag.

Oh thank you!
This looks Fabulous! My zipper are on backwards so this is an immense help on attaching zippers to my canvas!! Thank you so much!!
Marie, you are the BEST TEACHER!! Thank you for showing us how to add zippers to our leaders.

The hook and loop tape keeps the leader attached to the bars. One piece on the bar and the adjoining piece on the leader
Thank you! I have Arthritis in my hands and am really thinking that the zippers would make loading my quilt so much easier.
Yes, easier than red snappers, but I use both. Good Luck, give it a try.
Thanks for such an informative video.
I think I’ll give it a try
I love being able to zip one quilt off and put a rush quilt on the longarm.
Would it be worthwhile to attach the leader to the zipper with 1/4" fusible tape before stitching it down?

What size zipper did you use to make the leader. I was looking to purchase them but am unsure of the size.

How did you know if you were getting a drop cloth with no seam? What is the link to ine you got?
On Amazon, depending on how large you want the drop cloth, here are the 2 links I used.
12'x15' www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08D6W1F5H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
4'x12' www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010O5HZVW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
What type of hook and loop did you purchase? I purchased some once and it was not very sticky
I would NOT get the adhesive kind...I found out the hard way that the stickiness rubs off on your needle and can make a mess with the bobbin mecha
Why did you sew zipper on with your long arm vs your domestic machine? Would it matter

What did you use to label your leader cloths? I love it
I used my Silhouette Cameo vinyl cutter. Since I started quilting, it doesn't get nearly as much use as it used to 😄
