My father died to this song in a hospice in Dublin in 2015 tapping his finger to the beat.Less than 10 seconds after it finished he died.
I like to think we don't die but just pass on. Taking some of these songs with us to the beyond. Sorry for your loss.
"but I will remain, and I will back again and again and again"
good sleep! RIP
R.I.P to your father
hope he's happy for this is the last song he listened to
It's impressive to me that a country song can be about armed banditry, sailing, large-scale construction projects, interstellar space travel and reincarnation.
It was the 70's. The age of free love (and drugs) hadn't quite faded yet, and so you had some very unique ballads coming up in that time. You couldn't even say the 70's was anything in particular musically. There were soooo many good tunes coming from everywhere back then, that whole decade was swimming in gold and this was a part of that. It often felt like it was time to toss the old rules out of what couldn't be done and just go with the flow. These Boys were among those who helped revitalize country in a way no one had thought possible, and we'll all love them for it forever.
@@michaelheath2866 The song was released in 1985.
Michael Heath I don’t think they were doing drugs bud 😝
Not originally a country song. Written and first recorded by Jimmy Webb, produced by George Martin in 1977. Much more pop and orchestral. Webb was a friend of Waylon Jennings who recorded several of his songs including “MacArthur Park.”
@@tonkaGuy888 You aren't wrong, but for me the point is that country embraced the song and made it their own by implementing a country feel and beat. The lyrics being what they are were still embraced by country, which involves the song into the canon of country music. So the original comment can still be applicable. If country stars had said, "Hey this thematic content isn't country and we don't want to do it" then it wouldn't be a country music song. But it is because Webb's inspired lyrics inspired these stars as well.
Kids today don’t understand how big this band was. These are literally the Avengers of outlaw country
❤❤❤❤
Hell, I'm a kid but love the highwaymen
The cowboys of modern
What did your grandparents say about your music style?
@@dennisjakobsen1648 Are you trying to start a debate?. Real music was around in the late 1800's and early 1900's that my grandparents listened too, not mindless beats for cavemen that people listen today. Modern music has NO skill or talent from the musicians its just people selling a message of sin to manipulate the children to support evil (in my opinion). The highwaymen is great
Cash, Nelson, Kristofferson, Jennings. What a damn group.
and Reggie Young in the background :) good days long ago

No matter how many times I hear this song, it's never long enough.

Willie a little off beat
I took the studio version and made an extended version of it myself. Runs about 20 minutes

Willie is never off beat. It's not his fault the band can't follow his lead.🤗
i like how they cheer everytime a different singer starts singing
yea cos every one of em was big enough to get his own show
I think it's pre-recorded audience. I'm not saying they're not deserving, but some producers take liberties with audience sounds. The way the roar of this video comes and goes makes me believe it's an edit audience reaction.
Yeah and cash gets the loudest
The editing in this video is pretty funny.

When I was a boy Willie Nelson was old, and now 30 years later and he is still old, I think this dude was born old!

I was talking about that the other day. I'm 35 and hes looked exactly the same for as long as I can remember
I'm 70 and Willie looks younger than me...boy this dude is growing younger as we get older......spooky....

Willie: Robber
Kris: Sailor
Waylon: Dam builder
Johnny: SPACEMAN
Taking to into account the drugs they consumed it's quite accurate Jonny being the spaceman.
Thanks
Look up on YT Marty Stuart's commenting about presenting this song to Johnny Cash. Marty was thinking of the 4 guys and knew they wouldn't have to sing the verses together/harmonize which was good because of Willie's and Johnny's voices being so different. Marty said Johnny said "I want the one about the spaceship." The Stuart quote is only a couple of minutes long and easy to find.

More talent on that stage in a single night than in all of the music industry today.
You are certainly right about that talent versus the wanna be's today!!!!
I beg to differ. Dont look at the charts if you want true talent, look at the non mainstream genres and underground stuff, just like its always been.
To stick with the country theme, here are a few examples:
Blues Saraceno (gothic country/blues/hard rock/heavy metal)
The White Buffalo (alternative country/country/roots rock)
The Brothers Bright (modern alternative rock)
The Heavy Horses (country/roots)
Brother Dege (gothic americana/lafayette indie/modern blues rock/rebel blues)

Lyrics..
I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of '25
But I am still alive
I was a sailor
I was born upon the tide
With the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner 'round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft to furl the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still
I was a dam builder
Across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around
I'll always be around, and around and around
And around and around and around and around
I'll fly a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I'll come back again, and again
And again and again and again and again
And again
Thanks

Can we take a moment to appreciate the brilliant guitar playing of Reggie Young? The man was a legendary session guitarist in Memphis and Nashville. His band once toured with The Beatles as their opening act. He played guitar on some of the biggest hits of artists such as Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson. He was also a member of Jimmy Buffet's Coral Reefer Band.
Is he playing electric in the background? I love his tone
@@michaelfountain2620 Yes, he's the one doing all the little fills and flourishes between the verses and choruses.
THANK YOU for identifying him. The riffs he played in the breaks make this song truly memorable.

He was an exceptional and effortless player.
My dad drove bus for this tour the California leg, he was with Kris and his 17yr old son. It was some good stories, my dad always had stories he drove for greyhound for 35 yrs. But he came home with so much stuff from this tour, including a backstage pass signed by all of them, priceless. My dad died in 2012 from cancer at 78, but he had a life full of stories. FYI there were some Kris and smoking stories and how his son was a wild child, i think his name was Casey, not sure.

fire, water, earth and air. 4 key elements, 4 great musicians. very well spotted.
Back then the only jobs were being a bandit, working on a ship, building the dam or driving a starship. So it makes perfect sense.
my favorite element is starship
That's interesting: tbh after hearing the song a few times I got the impression that it's from the point of view of a single soul being reincarnated over the ages from the highway man right finally through to the spaceman, and then there's the line "when I reach the other side, I'll find a place to rest my spirits if I can". That's the impression I got, anyway.
@@jackspring7709 yea, reincarnation is definitely the unifying theme. Jimmy Webb, who wrote the lyrics, has said so himself
No country group nor any group will ever top these 4 legends
country group yeah but any group lol no go listen to Led Zeppelin they're by far number 1
@@chrismarple Pfffft. Not even close.
@@chrismarple While I'll concede that you ain't really rockin' till you get the Led out, there is simply no version of this reality where Zeppelin is even close to the level of these four legends...
Never ever will
Not country but,
Roy Orbison
Jeff Lynne
Tom Petty
Bob Dylan
George Harrison: Travelling Wilburys may give that mighty fine line up a run for its money..
4 simple, real men, paying tribute to other, real, simple working men, who gave their lives, to build society.
Wow- great comment. You nailed it
Yea, especially the Highwayman. Robbing and killing innocent people. He's really building society man!
You missed it
1992, Sydney Australia. I was 5 row from center stage. Willie, Waylon, Johnny, Kris.
This is the best Live performance. I will never forget. Legends.
The Highwaymen was a brilliant concept, putting 4 legends together, not just electronically, but as a performing entity, brilliant!
Entièrement d'accord avec vous,,, inoubliable
So true...I just wish Willie didn’t mail it in but that’s about all he ever did so
Thank you.
Quel dommage que Merle Haggard n'ait pas été le cinquième!
@@60BloodyChamp60 rude. If you're not a Willie fan, just say that
Played at my mates funeral last week, he was 46, English we lived in Coogee Beach Australia together in 1999...What a man... Had not heard this song before, heard it alot since, perfection, it will be in my life forever...and through it so will he, rest in paradise!
Listening to this from Coogee today mate. Your friend will find a place to rest his spirit if he can, perhaps he will become a coogee man again ✌
Sorry for your loss ..
My condolences to you and prayers for the repose of his soul!

The Avengers of country music.
Minus a few :)
I don't listen to this genre much. But I play this one video probably 50 times a month, with just my headphones.
Isn't that odd?
I don't think is odd, it is right, I do the same
Laid my best friend to rest a year ago, age 28. They played this song at his funeral. I'll never forget it.
Rip to your friend bud!
Sorry to hear bro
But he is still alive..
He is saliling across the universe
Rest in peace to him
This is the best song ever. They performed it to perfection.
lip synched
Tommy Acuna its the original footage matched with the live recording soundtrack to the concert
@@tommyacuna6384 clearly not.
The devils right hand runs it close
The most awesome thing, this song is about reincarnation. Learnt that listening to an interview with the awesome Willy Nelson. It is one of the few country and western (and they be separate as Grampa Whyatt would laugh as he told me, lol) songs my Mum's family totally didn't kill for me. Never thought I'd do this as so many do on youtube, but damnit Grandad Whyatt, may you be still mustering your cows on the huge range in the sky. You are totally and utterly missed by Mum and I the most. You taught me so much growing up about how to be successful in agriculture and life generally, and always did your best with all the questions I asked you rapid fire. I laughed when Mum told me you told her that I was your favourite grandchild, even with all those questions. You told her I asked good ones though. It's been over 30 years now, and I am almost 50 and I know you'd be proud of me lasting this long. You may not be a highway man, but give my best to Johnny Cash if you see him.
How can this masterpiece not send chills down your spine????!!!!! I'm not a huge country fan, but even this song had me shivering
Because it’s the Mount Rushmore of country singers
Well...it actually DID send chills, so I don't really have an answer to your question. LOL
@@BEASTMODEJR-xf5ky The song is beautiful - written by Jimmy Webb. He also wrote Up, Up and Away, done by the 5th Dimension. Super song writer. As beautiful as the song is - I think the magic of this performace is this performance. The four powerhouse stars. The dancing other-worldly nature of the guitars. Everything about this video/recording is ethereal and a work of art.
Well, it isn't a "country" song, per se. Written by Jimmy Webb, it just happened to be a hit by these super legends. He wrote other hit songs for other artists. One example of a totally not country sound, was Up Up and Away by the Fifth Dimension from the late 60's.
@RD H Remember, it's Jimmy Webb's lyrics. And Johnny's interpretation of them.
The internet isn't big enough for this much talent !
A salute, I feel is sufice!
Kris Kristofferson...best songwriter ever ..deserved much more recognition ❤
LEGENDARY!!!! I LOVE THE HIGHWAY MEN
Best super group of all time and I would give the world to be able to see them play live R.I.P. gentlemen you are sorely missed
At least Willie ain't dead
Phoenix Flores Kris Kristofferson isn’t dead
........Yet
MARS MABILIS DREW BILLI QUICK QuICK True, he’s like 83, but he still sounds amazing, all of them will and have performed until the very end
The Dirty Mac is a good super group. (John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Mitch Mitchell.)
This is REAL country music. My grandad's country music. Rest his soul.
31 years old from the UK and only just appreciating this music can listen for hours nothing like this is made in today's times my kids have to listen in the car so hopefully they will in years to come
crazy these legends performed together... never again will there be something like this.

Daniel Plummer Where do you have those chords from?
This song is in the key of D major and uses various combinations of the I, II, IV, V and VI chords which would be D, Em, G, A and Bm.
@@fastcarsaremylife I understand it sound really dumb but trust
me if you time the chords and words right it sounds surprisingly like the song. But I will happily try your version, thanks.
Six decades of Rock & Roll and now at 71, I finally am listening to the real music masters. Boy, did I miss a lot! This proves that God teaches us until we're ready to return back from whence we came!
Reggie Young on guitar solo. Amazing.
@cleitonpiccini RIP, Reggie.
I am a northern city kid and the son of a OTR owner operator long distance truck driver. I have listened to a lot of different music in a lot of different places and this is one of my favorites.😁😁😁😉
Waylon is the coolest SOB that ever lived‼️

This is just a fact!
