This 31K Mile 1993 Ford F350 OBS 7.3 IDI Diesel Dually was the Last Great Mechanical Diesel Truck

  • There's no question that turbos and advanced electronics made diesels more potent in the horsepower and torque department, but there's something to be said for a true all-mechanical diesel. The 7.3 IDI from International Harvester (or Navistar by 1993) is widely considered to be a benchmark for pickup and medium-duty truck engines, and is legendary amongst diesel enthusiasts for being long lived, reliable, and simple to keep going.
This is a 1993 Ford F350 DRW - the last to use a naturally aspirated 7.3 IDI. It's a rare find, having been kept in air conditioned storage since new, and driven sparingly by it's one prior owner. Most of these trucks worked very hard for a living - this one had a very soft life.
Full review and test drive by Bill. Car is available at Autohaus of Naples, www.AutohausNaples.com, or at (239) 263-8500.

I have two of these trucks, a 1989 F-250 and a 1996 F-150. Both have spent their lives being worked harder than average.
The F-250 has been in the family since new. It has a 5.0, AOD transmission, regular cab 8' bed. It had a lift gate installed on day 2. It has somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000 miles on it, and is mostly mechanically original. Second transmission, as the first was destroyed in a collision which knocked out the transmission cooler lines. Just recently, I pulled the original engine out and put a long block in, and replaced all the sensors / injectors, etc. The original engine was still in nearly perfect condition, with no lip on the cylinder walls and no damage anywhere. I could have left it in there and had a million mile engine.
The '96 is my daily driver, and has the original 300 I6, M5OD trans, super cab 6.5' bed. At almost 190,000 miles, it drives like a new truck. I use it to tow things regularly, and recently got back from a couple 700 mile round trips towing a horse trailer and a Jeep. It's in much nicer shape than the F-250, but has spent most of its life towing a travel trailer.

You basically own the road when you drove one of these babies definitely one of the most iconic trucks ever made in merica. And I myself owned a 92 F150 xlt almost identical to this two toned color here. Mind was a little bluer in color with a lighter blue in the wide stripe. I miss that ford and would like to have another. I like my new Tacoma sport but I'd take my ole 92 ford or 76 ford F series any day of the week. Just a plain practical work truck and the best thing about this baby is no computer all mechanical, that's what makes this truck so special.

I just bought a '94 7.3 IDI E-350 dually with a 16ft box frame off a guy in my neighborhood for $3500. I'd rather have had a truck cab, but still the best investment I've made since my 5 spd 2000 Mazda B2500 Ranger rebrand.

The 7.3 idi was a great engine for it's time. Its still a good engine . If it was 4x4 & a 5 speed I'd be on my way to get it. I have spent many many hours and miles sitting behind that engine and can say we got along great. That was about a 30k truck back then and I remember people saying it was crazy money. You will spend half that for a new engine in a modern truck today.

This one brings back great memories. My dad serviced and also up-fitted these trucks at Turnpike Ford in Secaucus, NJ. I was a kid and my mom would send me to work with him on summer breaks. Of course today that would cause the planet to skip a beat. Things were different back then.
Anyway I got to sit in, and also crawl under these trucks when they all were in this condition. The IDI was a great engine. Got a good chuckle at the fuel tank switch valve. Wonder it still works properly? Always a fun time when it failed mechanically and you were still driving on the low fuel tank (but the fuel reading switched to the secondary tank) and it stalled out. Now you got some fuel system bleeding to do 😂
Also @19:15 that not the truck rattling. Pretty sure it's Bill's bones.

I hope you stay on top of those coolant additives cuz these things need it. These old dually are beautiful! I’ve had both a 95 & 93 idi & the idi is better for longevity.
The Powerstroke is good, but it’s a pain to fix & it’s expensive for pasts & everything is frigin electronic & all that l computer crap.
That thing is mint & don’t let anyone turn up the pump.
