Yea, I built these at Arlington Assembly Plant back in that dispensation of time, loved building those babies. I was in the paint shop where we hand sprayed the door jams and painted under the deck lid, inter door frames, fire walls and outer surface of the rear of the deck lid.Because of all the repetitious bending i now have a lumbar that has had major surgery on it and am sitting here in pain at the moment but thank God for pain meds which work much better than C19 Whiskey. They made a lot of stretch, Limmazines out of these. Those pin stripes were hand painted back then using jigs and some of the old timers did them WITH OUT the jig, loved those old timers. Worked with GM 31 years and started out building chevy vans in 77, and finnished making Escslades in 2008.
Thank you for your service for building these pinnacle American luxury cars. However, I do not for a second believe those stripes were hand painted or painted at all. The same stripes on my 1988 Silverado were a tape like application, and I will bet these were the same. They peel right off if you wanted them to.
I saw it with my own eyes they had an overhead jig that you could pull down, a jig for both sides and one for the rear, the jigs had suction cups on them and once you lined up the jigs appropriately, you had an air valve that would release suction to the cups and steady the jig into position, once you were all set you had a cylinder cup filled with paint and had a roller at the delivery point that would wet the wheels on the painting cup, then there were smooth metal shelfs on the jig that you would hold the cup downward and roll the paint on the whole way down the jig and that would apply your stripe. these were special order options on I believe Cadillacs, and some buicks and even some of the premium Cutlasses back in the early 80s. We started building Montecarlo ss in the early 80s and they were all decals like most of our cars back then, but on premium models you could get real pin stripes Not decals if you ordered the right model with that option. I am 64 so it was a while ago, but I remember like it was yesterday.
What do you think of the 2005 deville with North Star with the 275 hp not 300 My first Cadillac and so far live it but only had it couple of weeks. My step father loved the older late 60s early 70s Cadillacs

A a kid growing up in the U.K. I thought everyone in the US drove these cars . I used to write to all the makers and ask for brochures . 6 weeks after posting my airmail letter a light brown package would arrive !! Exciting times . Thanks Bill
@@yungamurai the 1973 Cadillac was the most American only sedan you could get. The fleetwood model reached 251 inches in length, and 79 inches wide which was about average for full sized sedans, few marketed past that width that weren't station wagons. The 1954 Chysler Imperial was 84 inches wide. The 1973 Imperial Lebaron was 79 funilly enough. But the 73' Imperial was 235 inches and known as the longest solid sedan that isn't registered as a mid limo-sedan hybrid. The colors were vastly wonderful as well, iridescents, pastels, and dark rich colors. Brilliant thick chrome efforts, and interiors meant for a palace esk hotel lounge.
A truly excellent automobile. I own a 1992 that is virtually the exact same car as shown. This was one of the last hoorahs for the classic Cadillac, and it's a damn shame. Imagine what they could do with a land yacht like this now given today's engines and technology! Instead, Cadillac gave up its heritage trying, and failing, to beat the Europeans at their own game of small and sporty luxury. As a result, they are now a shadow of what they once were. It is telling that after over 20 years of trying to change their image, it is still the car shown in this video that people think of when they hear "Cadillac". Bill is spot-on when he says that today's Cadillacs are made by people who hate Cadillacs.
The Escala show car concept would have been the spiritual descendent of the classic Cadillacs of yore. Expensive and expansive, it was a true hardtop without a B pillar and with frameless door glass. Now it's apparently going to be built, but as an electric, the 'Celestiq'. Electrification is going to be a nightmare. It will be like riding in golf carts everywhere.

THE QUALITY IF CADLLAC BY 1991 WAS NOT CLOSE TO WHAT ITS PREVIOUS REPUTATION GAVE IT. THE ENGINES WERE NOT DEPENDABLE AND THE MATERIAL OF THE INTERIORS WAS SUB STANDARD FOR A CADILLAC. THE PLASTIC TRIM CRACKED EASILY FROM THE UV RAYS OF THE SUN.LEATHER WAS NOT TOP GRAIN COWHIDE UNLESS YOU BOUGHT THE TOP OF THE LINE SUCH AS ELDORADO.

For a 1991 year car this is a very outdated design.This is why Cadillac does not makes the most expensive cars in the world anymore.It was a to big leap from this to the cars from 1993 or 1994.It is expensive to build a production line from scratch so the quality does suffers.They did not follow a smooth transition from this to what was two years later.
@@viorelvoicu274 GM was making gobs of money on these at the time - essentially the body and tooling carried over from the 1970's. Very little investment needed to keep the product going. The older folks loved them though and kept buying. They basically wrecked GM by forcing them to cater to their wants and turned off a whole generation of upcoming buyers by not having modern product. By the time they did, it was too late, and those old, loyal buyers were dying off.
I have a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham which is pale yellow. Actually, the proper name of the color is Bavarian Calumet Cream. The interior is called Minoan Gold. I love it. She's only got 68,000 original miles on her. The A/C runs ice cold on the original charge and the clock, as well as everything else, still works.
Does GM still make cars? I don’t hear much about them. Last I remember a guy named “Potch” was talking to real people not actors about how impressive a Malibu was because no one believed it was a Shitty, I mean Chevy. Ah…good times.

Gotta give GM respect for knowing their demographic. Even though the European cars were now the symbol of success, for the older affluent American who started their career in the 50's, Cadillac was still the standard to show that you made it to the top.
I always craved them, but when they were ubiquitous, few thought they were all that special or would disappear one day. Now, they are very special indeed.

Bill The "BY HARVY" is Harry Cadillac Grand Rapids, Michigan. This Caddy was purchased by the wife of the deceased President of Gibson Refrigeration, and later the Air Conditioning Factory in Belding, Michigan. She was 70 years old when she bought th car from Harry off the showroom floor. It originally had the Crome wheels, and while parked in Harry's lot the wheels were stolen, so Harvy replaced the wheels with what is on the vehicle now. At 93 years old she decided she wanted a new Caddy, and sold it as promised to a close family friend who traded it for a 1973 Triple Black Cadillac with Factory Red Pinstripes that now has 24,038 original miles. At 25 years old he bought a new 1973 Brown with White Vinyl Top. That was one of his favorite Cadillacs of over a dozen new ones he bought in his life besides the two 1976 Cadillacs both Dark Green a Coupe de Ville with White Leather, and a Sedan de Ville with Green Corduroy Pillow seating. Your 91' now was pampered and kept in a heated garage throughout its life! Always maintained by Harry! ENJOY!
Grandma had a ‘74 Fleetwood Brougham with a 500cu V-8, which I took to my HS Senior Prom and used to drive it to Florida most Falls for her from snow country. It was Grandpa’s last Caddy after he annually got a new Fleetwood since the mid-60s. Palacious interior, drove like a ship, clock never worked and my little brother managed to pull off the inside of the rear door just trying to close from inside…it was (almost) held on by a couple of clips. Wasn’t must fun to drive fast with only a 85mph speedo.
Bill - this car is YOU. Keep it and love it my friend. What a fine example of one of America's best products. I certainly miss these chromed long dazzling line, simple mechanically - but oh so rewarding to ride in and drive. And oh yeah. Curb presence is unmatched. Everything but Lincolns absolute finest looks rather pathetic next to this machine.
My great uncle got one he bought brand new when these dropped. I remember me and my father going with him to a Cadillac dealership to pick it up. Remember we was removing the plastic from the inside. He still owns it maroon on maroon. He pampered that Cadillac currently sitting at 11K miles. No rust or dents interior no rips. I've been trying to buy it from him, but he won't budge lol.
Coach Builder Edition: the moment I saw this car, I felt it sat 'beefier' than standard, almost like it is riding high. Also, those are large tires and so dressy! Really is the Pinnacle.
I still have my dad's. Same car only dark blue. Gets driven couple times a year. Best is a boat load of people heading to the drive-in. Every time I drive it, I love how it floats down the road

@@clintonmcfarland4529 because old cars have character! I’m 35 and have been driving old cars since I was 22. All my friends your age, when given the chance to drive them instantly say “I want one”. I currently own a 1968 Fleetwood Brougham and a 1986 Buick Grand National. The older guys just don’t want to share their cars with the young guys. Even if they do drive Hondas,share the love of cars with them.
And I get that the old guys don’t want them to “ruin” the old cars by modifying them or altering them from stock. But hey, they’re keeping them on the road for future generations to enjoy! These big collections of classics stuck behind closed doors for no one to enjoy seeing going 70 mph down the highway, or for people not to touch. Which is the reason “cars and coffee” events are popular these days and not the museums.
I absolutely love this car. Beautiful. Couple of things: in ‘91 this would have had standard remote locks, so the remotes you have are either the original GM remotes or if they’re aftermarket they upgraded from the factory system. NOBODY “liked” the downsized front wheel drive ‘85 Cadillacs. They put up with them, but they were absolutely awful. Especially with the boat anchor HT4100. This particular car has the rare $1300 optional Astroroof, and the even more rare $750 optional CD/Cassette combo player. 1990 was the first year a CD player was available in any Cadillac so in ‘91 they were still rare and expensive!
I find it fascinating that 1985 was the year both for "New Coke" and the FWD Cadillac.. Both were equally unpopular. Even the door lock button included a wreath and crest on top.

The new FWD Cadillacs were just awfully conceived, awfully designed, and downright embarrassing cars. My Grandfather had an ‘87 Sedan deVille which I’d driven a few times. I wanted to drive it off a cliff in all honesty.
@@alwaysopen7970 Yeah GM/Delco redesigned their head units in ‘93 on all GM cars. Same thing happened on my Mom’s ‘98 LeSabre. I took it out, tore apart the unit, and found a couple teeth broke off the tape deck loading cam. The deck could be replaced as one assembly.
This model is to me - the classic elegant American luxury automobile beautiful and the headlights seem more elegant and more smoothly integrated here. So elegantly handsome. I owned a 1981 Lincoln continental mark 6- Also very classic elegant profile with " opera lamps"
I went GM training center on Riverside Drive in Burbank and I was trained on this model. I loved this car, and as a tech I never loved anything . GW Bush rode around in this car that was so heavy due to the armor that we could not get it on a lift. I realized I should have become a secret service agent after learning that their job includes hanging out at car dealerships watching the oil being changed on a car. I think I will buy one of these . The underpinnings of this car was the GM or Chevy pickup truck. On the President`s limo we tried to write down the parts numbers of the belts and hoses to be able to use them on our own cars or selling them as hot rod parts, we found that the parts were impossible for us to buy and that idea went down the drain. I think you should keep it for a while.
I have flipped cars for over 35 years and Yea, This one, I defiantly would keep for myself. It is once over and clean as can be. I would have no guilt in keeping it.
For two decades I searched for a triple black 90 Brougham for my retirement years. A year ago that finally materialized when I bought one as a roller needing paint. I will get a Cadillac 500 for it instead of the lowly Chevy 350, can't wait to drive it!

When you say Cadillac to a gen xer this is what comes to mind, from 69 model up. Long hood, long rear deck, formal roofline, wire wheels, power everything, hood ornament, rides like a sofa. What a beauty. Thanks, Bill.
Big, black, boat! Very cool. I did some body repairs on a customer's '75 Fleetwood back when I was working at a body shop outside of Trenton, NJ. in 1976. After fixing and detailing it I was to drive it to the owners house about 7 or so miles away. Unfortunately I didn't make it as some senior citizen came out from a side street and into my path without looking. I swerved to avoid hitting him and instead went directly into the largest tree on the block at about 45 mph! DAMN IT! Totaled the car and even though using a seat belt, I hit the windshield with my face breaking my nose. The owner wound up getting a brand new clone of the car except a '76 model this time. And yes, I kept my job. I was just 20 years old at the time.
That car was originally from Michigan - the "By Harvey" badge on the left side of the deck lid is from Harvey Cadillac in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Cadillac script on the right side of the trunk should be above the 5.7 liter badge. The Brougham D'Elegance badges on the rear quarters look like they're mounted too high. Up through the 1986 model year, the base model was the Fleetwood Brougham and the upper trim model was the Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance. There was a lot of confusion during the 1985-1986 model years since there was a Fleetwood d'Elegance (FWD) and the Fleetwood Brougham/Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance models. All Broughams were Fleetwoods but not all Fleetwoods were Broughams...LOL. The Fleetwood name was dropped from the 1987 RWD model - it was called the Brougham (base model) and the Brougham d'Elegance (upper trim model) with the 1987-1992 model years. After that, they reverted to the Fleetwood and Fleetwood Brougham models for the 1993-1996 model years. The vinyl enclosure around the stationary portion of the rear door windows was on all 1990-1992 Broughams - they were not specific to the d'Elegance package. The 15/22 MPG rating indicates it had the heavy duty trailering package. The non-trailering package cars were rated at 17/25 MPG. That vintage of Brougham had the engine clutch fan with or without the trailer towing package. The steering wheel center pad was the same from the 1981 model through the 1992 model. The 79 and 80 model had a similar steering wheel but the center pad was all vinyl with the Cadillac emblem in the center. No rack and pinion steering on those cars - it was recirculating ball steering with 12 or 13 grease fittings. That was carryover from 1977. The warning lights behind the woodgrain was new for the 1990 model year. Prior to that, it was a black strip in that area with the lights. The 1980-1989 models had an analog speedometer and the fuel gage was in the center where the Cadillac script is on this car.
Yep. I’m originally from Belding and most of the Caddy’s running around had those emblems. No doubt a snow bird brought this one down to Florida for the winter and there it stayed.
The 5th Avenue that ran from 1982 until 1989 (rear drive) was gorgeous! The styling could not have been more perfect. The only thing it lacked was hidden wipers.

No comparison between the 2. Imperial,real wood,leathereven power vent windows,and that dual air,not to mention it's flat out majestic size and presence.god what a road machine.black over white,white full leather interior, and 413 c.i,340 h.p eng.this was a automobile! Good God! That paintwork is absolutely stunning. I’m of a similar vintage as this car, and I wish I’d aged half as well. My grandparents drove nothing but Caddy’s from this era during my formative years, and damn if this doesn’t bring back fond memories.

That classic Cadillac front end. Those were the days! Amazingly clean, well kept car. Gorgeous paint! Personally, you'd be a fool if you didn't keep it. Depending on mileage, and the mechanics of the vehicle, it would be a wonderful addition. It sounds like you really like the car. Apparently since you own a truck, gas isn't a problem for you. I'd go for it.

Currently 18, turning 19 this year. Just started looking into cars myself and I fell in LOVE with this one when I saw it on my walk in the local city. The one I saw however, was beaten up inside and owned by some loser but dear word did I fall in love anyways. I did my Cadillac research and low and behold I came across this video…. and do I love it. All the new cars bore the heck out of me and my family always tells me that the older cars of this era aren’t good anymore. I guess that’s a say to how it was taken care of over the years but this is a beauty!! Thank you for doing this looonnnnnggg review! Also that’s definitely a keeper!!
The misaligned door strips alone speak volumes as to why people were flocking to Lexus and the Europeans. While this car is truly beautiful (ugly pinstriping aside), its quality is still American.
Yeah, these door strips are horrible. They may have been removed and repainted, which might explain it? Aside from that, the overall build quality looks really nice on this car.
@@LearnAboutFlow At least you didn't directly blame unions. The oldest car I have owned was a 1951 Packard. The newest is a 2002 Pontiac. I had/have no problem with the assembly quality of either car. In particular, the Pontiac has well styled but obviously low cost materials inside. But the interior looks almost new after twenty years. There is no fake wood. Yeah, American cars are terrible.
When a Cadillac was a Cadillac. Absolutely a brilliant car. Class, charm, elegance, size, a presence. When you roll up in this, people look. A headturner! You can have your Lexus or Mercedes or whatever but these are celebrities!

I remember driving my parents 91 Cadillac when I first got my license. I was driving about 45 mph and accidentally slammed it into reverse, don’t ask me how….the rear tires locked up and I skidded to a stop. I thought I had destroyed the car 😢 Then I just put it back into drive and drove off. We had the car another 10 yrs and never had a transmission issue 😂

I accidentally put it in reverse and it locked up the trans which in turn locked up the driveshaft that leads to the rear wheels because it’s a rear wheel drive car. Not sure what you’re talking about?? Front, rear or AWD, if you put the trans in reverse when traveling @ 45mph it’s either gonna blow up the transmission or lock up the wheels. My comment was meant as a testimonial to how sturdy these were built.

Some idiot kid stuck his head in the door and put it into Park. It didn't break anything but I almost punched the kid into next week. I got new tires for free; mostly from not killing the kid. He got fired. No habla Inglis
My friend did that same thing with my 1976 Monte Carlo I was driving two buddies home from the bar and they starting horsing around wrestling and one kicked the shifter lever into park going 65 and it locked the tires up but I just shifted it into D and it went on its way like nothing happened .
The Olds 98 Regency was the most beautiful GM full sized coupe and sedan of this body. The Cadillac Brougham/Buick Roadmaster from the 1993-96 were beautiful. The seatbelt anchored on the door was a stupid idea...
I had an 89 Fleetwood White With wedgewood blue Leather. Had a 307Oldsmobile engine With a quadrant Made in Arlington Texas. It was my father's car And I loved it The last Cadillac I had What's the 2013 CTS4Diamond white My dad left me when he died Thanks for the memories bill

ABSOLUTELY fantastic! Bill, you and I are only a couple of years apart in age, and I remember these cars well... and QUITE fondly! A neighbor across the street had one, and he used to whisk his kids and myself around Detroit city in it in the very early 80's. I just recall the near-silence, and smoothness, as the torquey V8 pushed us back into those over cushioned, soft, velour seats. Great stuff man! Thanks for posting this one. I think you should keep it... I would!!!

I absolutely love the way these cars drove. They made you feel like just going out and having a good time and you always looked back at it when you parked and walked away from it because it made you feel special. I liked the opera lamps, digital dash, and the turn signal indicators. The gas door locks and unlocks with the power door lock switch, the standard ABS was a nice touch. I don't see any indication of the Coachbuilder Pkg here but I'll note 91 offered a heavy duty ride pkg as standard equipment which included a rear sway bar. Watch out for unusual wear on the rear tires due to excessive positive camber. This was corrected on 93-96 models.

37:40 I love the warning lights in that strip, which were probably designed to keep grampa from driving all the way home with no oil pressure. Cadillac also invented turn-signal chimes that got progressively louder and a 2-light ("WATER" and "STOP! ENGINE HOT"/buzzer) system to keep its more absent-minded clientele from doing too much damage. If I had a car like this and an infinite supply of money, I'd like to put analog gauges into the un-used stretches of that strip and real power vent windows into the rear doors.
Just picked up a 1992 5.0 Brougham with 42k mikes for 5 pieces!….needs an antenna and a headliner. The reclining seats were stuck but Watched a video from Anthony Grozzo and had them working in 20 minutes. Love it!

My grandpa owned a brown 1988 Brougham (only it had the carbureted Olds 307 engine) when I was very little, it was truly a land yacht. My favorite feature on these older Cadillac's will always be the horn (at 37:36).
Yeah, these horns sound familiar. Circa '76 I had a '66 Olds Dynamic 88 4dr hdtp, and I got all the horns, including the trumpet, from an El Dorado in the junkyard. The El Dorados had that trumpet horn, mounted vertically in front of the radiator that sounded like a freight train. As an 18-year-old I used them copiously, for safety, with the expected result.
Imagine that your choice in 1991 is an LS400 or the Brougham, and choosing the Brougham. :-) The Brougham has aged well and looks even better now than it did new. If I was Bill, I'd definitely keep it.
it's crazy you bring up the 91 LS. my dad bought one a few years back and it was soooo nice. but I was just really comparing the two cars in my heads for their time, they are way different.

Those were always good cars . . . when new you knew they were special and wanted one . . . still want one. Its like the American S class Mercedes. It was so distinctive.
The 93-96 Fleetwoods we're a definite interior and style downgrade compared to this. But the engine was so much stronger ignoring the fragile optispark.
I think the OG Optispark got a bad rap. My family had several cars with the LT1 and none of us ever had an Optispark issue. I’m not saying it wasn’t an issue for some, but I never saw it.
Avoided 94-6 for those reasons. The additional HP/torque would be cool but, I am the mechanic and can change traditional parts far easier. Agree on the interiors 100% though the sound system is great.

Yea, I built these at Arlington Assembly Plant back in that dispensation of time, loved building those babies. I was in the paint shop where we hand sprayed the door jams and painted under the deck lid, inter door frames, fire walls and outer surface of the rear of the deck lid.Because of all the repetitious bending i now have a lumbar that has had major surgery on it and am sitting here in pain at the moment but thank God for pain meds which work much better than C19 Whiskey. They made a lot of stretch, Limmazines out of these. Those pin stripes were hand painted back then using jigs and some of the old timers did them WITH OUT the jig, loved those old timers. Worked with GM 31 years and started out building chevy vans in 77, and finnished making Escslades in 2008.
Thank you for your service for building these pinnacle American luxury cars. However, I do not for a second believe those stripes were hand painted or painted at all. The same stripes on my 1988 Silverado were a tape like application, and I will bet these were the same. They peel right off if you wanted them to.
I saw it with my own eyes they had an overhead jig that you could pull down, a jig for both sides and one for the rear, the jigs had suction cups on them and once you lined up the jigs appropriately, you had an air valve that would release suction to the cups and steady the jig into position, once you were all set you had a cylinder cup filled with paint and had a roller at the delivery point that would wet the wheels on the painting cup, then there were smooth metal shelfs on the jig that you would hold the cup downward and roll the paint on the whole way down the jig and that would apply your stripe. these were special order options on I believe Cadillacs, and some buicks and even some of the premium Cutlasses back in the early 80s. We started building Montecarlo ss in the early 80s and they were all decals like most of our cars back then, but on premium models you could get real pin stripes Not decals if you ordered the right model with that option. I am 64 so it was a while ago, but I remember like it was yesterday.

The fleetwood model reached 251 inches in length, and 79 inches wide which was about average for full sized sedans, few marketed past that width that weren't station wagons. The 1954 Chysler Imperial was 84 inches wide. The 1973 Imperial Lebaron was 79 funilly enough. But the 73' Imperial was 235 inches and known as the longest solid sedan that isn't registered as a mid limo-sedan hybrid. The colors were vastly wonderful as well, iridescents, pastels, and dark rich colors. Brilliant thick chrome efforts, and interiors meant for a palace esk hotel lounge.

A truly excellent automobile. I own a 1992 that is virtually the exact same car as shown. This was one of the last hoorahs for the classic Cadillac, and it's a damn shame. Imagine what they could do with a land yacht like this now given today's engines and technology! Instead, Cadillac gave up its heritage trying, and failing, to beat the Europeans at their own game of small and sporty luxury. As a result, they are now a shadow of what they once were. It is telling that after over 20 years of trying to change their image, it is still the car shown in this video that people think of when they hear "Cadillac". Bill is spot-on when he says that today's Cadillacs are made by people who hate Cadillacs.

The Escala show car concept would have been the spiritual descendent of the classic Cadillacs of yore. Expensive and expansive, it was a true hardtop without a B pillar and with frameless door glass. Now it's apparently going to be built, but as an electric, the 'Celestiq'. Electrification is going to be a nightmare. It will be like riding in golf carts everywhere.

For a 1991 year car this is a very outdated design.This is why Cadillac does not makes the most expensive cars in the world anymore.It was a to big leap from this to the cars from 1993 or 1994.It is expensive to build a production line from scratch so the quality does suffers.They did not follow a smooth transition from this to what was two years later.
@@viorelvoicu274 GM was making gobs of money on these at the time - essentially the body and tooling carried over from the 1970's. Very little investment needed to keep the product going. The older folks loved them though and kept buying. They basically wrecked GM by forcing them to cater to their wants and turned off a whole generation of upcoming buyers by not having modern product. By the time they did, it was too late, and those old, loyal buyers were dying off.
I have a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham which is pale yellow. Actually, the proper name of the color is Bavarian Calumet Cream. The interior is called Minoan Gold. I love it. She's only got 68,000 original miles on her. The A/C runs ice cold on the original charge and the clock, as well as everything else, still works.
Nobody does a/c and heat better than GM!

Bill The "BY HARVY" is Harry Cadillac Grand Rapids, Michigan. This Caddy was purchased by the wife of the deceased President of Gibson Refrigeration, and later the Air Conditioning Factory in Belding, Michigan. She was 70 years old when she bought th car from Harry off the showroom floor. It originally had the Crome wheels, and while parked in Harry's lot the wheels were stolen, so Harvy replaced the wheels with what is on the vehicle now. At 93 years old she decided she wanted a new Caddy, and sold it as promised to a close family friend who traded it for a 1973 Triple Black Cadillac with Factory Red Pinstripes that now has 24,038 original miles. At 25 years old he bought a new 1973 Brown with White Vinyl Top. That was one of his favorite Cadillacs of over a dozen new ones he bought in his life besides the two 1976 Cadillacs both Dark Green a Coupe de Ville with White Leather, and a Sedan de Ville with Green Corduroy Pillow seating. Your 91' now was pampered and kept in a heated garage throughout its life! Always maintained by Harry! ENJOY!

Grandma had a ‘74 Fleetwood Brougham with a 500cu V-8, which I took to my HS Senior Prom and used to drive it to Florida most Falls for her from snow country. It was Grandpa’s last Caddy after he annually got a new Fleetwood since the mid-60s. Palacious interior, drove like a ship, clock never worked and my little brother managed to pull off the inside of the rear door just trying to close from inside…it was (almost) held on by a couple of clips. Wasn’t must fun to drive fast with only a 85mph speedo.
Bill - this car is YOU. Keep it and love it my friend. What a fine example of one of America's best products. I certainly miss these chromed long dazzling line, simple mechanically - but oh so rewarding to ride in and drive. And oh yeah. Curb presence is unmatched. Everything but Lincolns absolute finest looks rather pathetic next to this machine.

My great uncle got one he bought brand new when these dropped. I remember me and my father going with him to a Cadillac dealership to pick it up. Remember we was removing the plastic from the inside. He still owns it maroon on maroon. He pampered that Cadillac currently sitting at 11K miles. No rust or dents interior no rips. I've been trying to buy it from him, but he won't budge lol.

A standard Brougham with the 5.7L engine here. Not coach built. "By Harvey" is the dealer advertising tag.
As I recall, all the 5.7 cars had the heavy duty tow suspension, which explains the higher ride height in the rear.
I still have my dad's. Same car only dark blue. Gets driven couple times a year. Best is a boat load of people heading to the drive-in. Every time I drive it, I love how it floats down the road

I currently own a 1968 Fleetwood Brougham and a 1986 Buick Grand National. The older guys just don’t want to share their cars with the young guys. Even if they do drive Hondas,share the love of cars with them.
And I get that the old guys don’t want them to “ruin” the old cars by modifying them or altering them from stock. But hey, they’re keeping them on the road for future generations to enjoy! These big collections of classics stuck behind closed doors for no one to enjoy seeing going 70 mph down the highway, or for people not to touch. Which is the reason “cars and coffee” events are popular these days and not the museums.

Couple of things: in ‘91 this would have had standard remote locks, so the remotes you have are either the original GM remotes or if they’re aftermarket they upgraded from the factory system.
NOBODY “liked” the downsized front wheel drive ‘85 Cadillacs. They put up with them, but they were absolutely awful. Especially with the boat anchor HT4100.
This particular car has the rare $1300 optional Astroroof, and the even more rare $750 optional CD/Cassette combo player. 1990 was the first year a CD player was available in any Cadillac so in ‘91 they were still rare and expensive!
I find it fascinating that 1985 was the year both for "New Coke" and the FWD Cadillac.. Both were equally unpopular. Even the door lock button included a wreath and crest on top.

The new FWD Cadillacs were just awfully conceived, awfully designed, and downright embarrassing cars. My Grandfather had an ‘87 Sedan deVille which I’d driven a few times. I wanted to drive it off a cliff in all honesty.
The tape players from just 2 years later crapped out not long after the warranty expired. My 93 has a mere radio at this point.
@@alwaysopen7970 Yeah GM/Delco redesigned their head units in ‘93 on all GM cars. Same thing happened on my Mom’s ‘98 LeSabre. I took it out, tore apart the unit, and found a couple teeth broke off the tape deck loading cam. The deck could be replaced as one assembly.

Those speakers are the sign of a CD player in dash. I love the extra black trim on the bumpers and glass headlight covers. Just a wonderful car.
I went GM training center on Riverside Drive in Burbank and I was trained on this model. I loved this car, and as a tech I never loved anything . GW Bush rode around in this car that was so heavy due to the armor that we could not get it on a lift. I realized I should have become a secret service agent after learning that their job includes hanging out at car dealerships watching the oil being changed on a car. I think I will buy one of these . The underpinnings of this car was the GM or Chevy pickup truck. On the President`s limo we tried to write down the parts numbers of the belts and hoses to be able to use them on our own cars or selling them as hot rod parts, we found that the parts were impossible for us to buy and that idea went down the drain. I think you should keep it for a while.
I have flipped cars for over 35 years and Yea, This one, I defiantly would keep for myself. It is once over and clean as can be. I would have no guilt in keeping it.
For two decades I searched for a triple black 90 Brougham for my retirement years. A year ago that finally materialized when I bought one as a roller needing paint. I will get a Cadillac 500 for it instead of the lowly Chevy 350, can't wait to drive it!

Big, black, boat! Very cool. I did some body repairs on a customer's '75 Fleetwood back when I was working at a body shop outside of Trenton, NJ. in 1976. After fixing and detailing it I was to drive it to the owners house about 7 or so miles away. Unfortunately I didn't make it as some senior citizen came out from a side street and into my path without looking. I swerved to avoid hitting him and instead went directly into the largest tree on the block at about 45 mph! DAMN IT! Totaled the car and even though using a seat belt, I hit the windshield with my face breaking my nose. The owner wound up getting a brand new clone of the car except a '76 model this time. And yes, I kept my job. I was just 20 years old at the time.
That car was originally from Michigan - the "By Harvey" badge on the left side of the deck lid is from Harvey Cadillac in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Cadillac script on the right side of the trunk should be above the 5.7 liter badge. The Brougham D'Elegance badges on the rear quarters look like they're mounted too high.
Up through the 1986 model year, the base model was the Fleetwood Brougham and the upper trim model was the Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance. There was a lot of confusion during the 1985-1986 model years since there was a Fleetwood d'Elegance (FWD) and the Fleetwood Brougham/Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance models. All Broughams were Fleetwoods but not all Fleetwoods were Broughams...LOL.
The Fleetwood name was dropped from the 1987 RWD model - it was called the Brougham (base model) and the Brougham d'Elegance (upper trim model) with the 1987-1992 model years. After that, they reverted to the Fleetwood and Fleetwood Brougham models for the 1993-1996 model years.
The vinyl enclosure around the stationary portion of the rear door windows was on all 1990-1992 Broughams - they were not specific to the d'Elegance package. The 15/22 MPG rating indicates it had the heavy duty trailering package. The non-trailering package cars were rated at 17/25 MPG. That vintage of Brougham had the engine clutch fan with or without the trailer towing package.
The steering wheel center pad was the same from the 1981 model through the 1992 model. The 79 and 80 model had a similar steering wheel but the center pad was all vinyl with the Cadillac emblem in the center.
No rack and pinion steering on those cars - it was recirculating ball steering with 12 or 13 grease fittings. That was carryover from 1977. The warning lights behind the woodgrain was new for the 1990 model year. Prior to that, it was a black strip in that area with the lights. The 1980-1989 models had an analog speedometer and the fuel gage was in the center where the Cadillac script is on this car.

Back in the late 80's early 90's I use to undercoat and pinstripe those 5 mile long boats. Fitting them on the lift was fun.

The one I saw however, was beaten up inside and owned by some loser but dear word did I fall in love anyways. I did my Cadillac research and low and behold I came across this video…. and do I love it. All the new cars bore the heck out of me and my family always tells me that the older cars of this era aren’t good anymore. My parent's first new Cadillac was a 1965 Calais. No AC no power windows no door locks.
The misaligned door strips alone speak volumes as to why people were flocking to Lexus and the Europeans. While this car is truly beautiful (ugly pinstriping aside), its quality is still American.

The newest is a 2002 Pontiac.
I had/have no problem with the assembly quality of either car. In particular, the Pontiac has well styled but obviously low cost materials inside. But the interior looks almost new after twenty years. There is no fake wood. Yeah, American cars are terrible.

I have seen references to the door handles as "casket style". They added to the elegance, for sure.
When a Cadillac was a Cadillac. Absolutely a brilliant car. Class, charm, elegance, size, a presence. When you roll up in this, people look. A headturner! You can have your Lexus or Mercedes or whatever but these are celebrities!

I remember driving my parents 91 Cadillac when I first got my license. I was driving about 45 mph and accidentally slammed it into reverse, don’t ask me how….the rear tires locked up and I skidded to a stop. I thought I had destroyed the car 😢 Then I just put it back into drive and drove off. We had the car another 10 yrs and never had a transmission issue 😂

I accidentally put it in reverse and it locked up the trans which in turn locked up the driveshaft that leads to the rear wheels because it’s a rear wheel drive car. Not sure what you’re talking about?? Front, rear or AWD, if you put the trans in reverse when traveling @ 45mph it’s either gonna blow up the transmission or lock up the wheels. My comment was meant as a testimonial to how sturdy these were built.
@@christophermartin972 I had a Cavalier in a tire shop because the tires they sold me were out of round. the front of the car was up in the air and running in drive to show the boss I wasn't imagining it. Some idiot kid stuck his head in the door and put it into Park. It didn't break anything but I almost punched the kid into next week. I got new tires for free; mostly from not killing the kid. He got fired. No habla Inglis
My friend did that same thing with my 1976 Monte Carlo I was driving two buddies home from the bar and they starting horsing around wrestling and one kicked the shifter lever into park going 65 and it locked the tires up but I just shifted it into D and it went on its way like nothing happened .

The Olds 98 Regency was the most beautiful GM full sized coupe and sedan of this body. The Cadillac Brougham/Buick Roadmaster from the 1993-96 were beautiful. The seatbelt anchored on the door was a stupid idea...
I looked for a 95 Roadmaster before buying my 93 Fleetwood.

Harvey Cadillac is in Grand Rapids Mi. I worked there in 1988. Every car sold had a “By Harvey” emblem.
That front end styling is Rolls Royce of the era.

ABSOLUTELY fantastic! Bill, you and I are only a couple of years apart in age, and I remember these cars well... and QUITE fondly! A neighbor across the street had one, and he used to whisk his kids and myself around Detroit city in it in the very early 80's. I just recall the near-silence, and smoothness, as the torquey V8 pushed us back into those over cushioned, soft, velour seats. Great stuff man! Thanks for posting this one. I think you should keep it... I would!!!

I absolutely love the way these cars drove. They made you feel like just going out and having a good time and you always looked back at it when you parked and walked away from it because it made you feel special. I liked the opera lamps, digital dash, and the turn signal indicators. The gas door locks and unlocks with the power door lock switch, the standard ABS was a nice touch. I don't see any indication of the Coachbuilder Pkg here but I'll note 91 offered a heavy duty ride pkg as standard equipment which included a rear sway bar. Watch out for unusual wear on the rear tires due to excessive positive camber. This was corrected on 93-96 models.
Hard to watch this one with out hearing Anthony Gozzo's voice.

37:40 I love the warning lights in that strip, which were probably designed to keep grampa from driving all the way home with no oil pressure. Cadillac also invented turn-signal chimes that got progressively louder and a 2-light ("WATER" and "STOP! ENGINE HOT"/buzzer) system to keep its more absent-minded clientele from doing too much damage. If I had a car like this and an infinite supply of money, I'd like to put analog gauges into the un-used stretches of that strip and real power vent windows into the rear doors.
Just picked up a 1992 5.0 Brougham with 42k mikes for 5 pieces!….needs an antenna and a headliner. The reclining seats were stuck but Watched a video from Anthony Grozzo and had them working in 20 minutes. Love it!

My grandpa owned a brown 1988 Brougham (only it had the carbureted Olds 307 engine) when I was very little, it was truly a land yacht. My favorite feature on these older Cadillac's will always be the horn (at 37:36).
Yeah, these horns sound familiar. Circa '76 I had a '66 Olds Dynamic 88 4dr hdtp, and I got all the horns, including the trumpet, from an El Dorado in the junkyard. The El Dorados had that trumpet horn, mounted vertically in front of the radiator that sounded like a freight train. As an 18-year-old I used them copiously, for safety, with the expected result.
Imagine that your choice in 1991 is an LS400 or the Brougham, and choosing the Brougham. :-) The Brougham has aged well and looks even better now than it did new. If I was Bill, I'd definitely keep it.
it's crazy you bring up the 91 LS. my dad bought one a few years back and it was soooo nice. but I was just really comparing the two cars in my heads for their time, they are way different.

what a classic gem i grew up as a caddy kid thats all my pops had i came home from the hospital after birth in '67 in a '67 coupe de ville in the '70 's he had a '73 '75 '77 '80 all coupe de ville in 93 i owned a '73 fleetwood and now i have a '79 fleetwood d elegance love it also fantastic channel keep doing what youre doin

Those were always good cars . . . when new you knew they were special and wanted one . . . still want one. Its like the American S class Mercedes. It was so distinctive.
The 93-96 Fleetwoods we're a definite interior and style downgrade compared to this. But the engine was so much stronger ignoring the fragile optispark.
I think the OG Optispark got a bad rap. My family had several cars with the LT1 and none of us ever had an Optispark issue.
I’m not saying it wasn’t an issue for some, but I never saw it.
Avoided 94-6 for those reasons. The additional HP/torque would be cool but, I am the mechanic and can change traditional parts far easier. Agree on the interiors 100% though the sound system is great.
I’m from the UK and my parents in the 80’s had two late 70’s Brougham’s and they were awesome! They owned our narrow British roads!

And true as that comment is, GM is gonna tank one day at the rate there're going. Overpriced, good paint jobbed junk they build now. No good budget cars that are built with quality, similar makes of Caddy suv's are high priced Chevys cladding in Caddy skin, just terrible and unjustified for fair consumers who wants to buy good American made cars. Just a matter of time when GM sinks to the bottom
