Great news! Here in Canada's capital it's below freezing and my Bandit slumbers in the garage dreaming of spring (March or April). Happy New Year! Because I was under the impression that you should never mix DOT 4 and DOT 5 and I was in the dark about DOT 5.1, I went forth and googled and this is what I found: "Since DOT 4 and 5.1 are both glycol-based brake fluids they are compatible with each other, which means they can be readily mixed without harming your brake system. It is important never to mistake DOT 5.1 (glycol-based) with DOT 5 which is silicone-based and should never be mixed with any other DOT fluid." Good to know!
@grosbeakmc- thank you! We've got hot weather here. Some 30 degrees Celsius at times. I did know about not mixing 4 and 5 to be honest. To be safe though, keeping it all the same is the way to go. 5.1 is what I use. Dot 4 was probably okay back in 2003. I'm just recommending using the best as safest, so it's probably not right of me to say "only use". Nay mind 🙂.
@@antonyhochnah mate. DOT 5 should only ever go in a DOT 5 brake system. The seals can swell and cause some damage. DOT 5.1 is the higher spec built to exceed DOT 4, which was built to exceed DOT 3. Also temperature of climate will make very minimal difference, as the brake rotors and pads can get get significantly hotter than any ambient temperature on this planet.
@16bittech - Dot 4 and Dot 5.1 can be mixed (but why would you?) but Dot 5 is silicone based which can't be mixed with anything else. Which is essentially what you're saying here 😊 I'm just using straight 5.1. Dot 4 is the standard spec for the Bandit.
Mate, you need to make it a mission to find the bloke that owned this thing before you,,, and give him the fkg hiding he deserves! Never seen a more poorly maintained bike of it's age, just simple stuff and thankfully easy enough to rectify, he must've been a fkg hamfisted dolt that's fer sure. Throw some gsxr11 cams in it for another easy 20hp and you're set.
@robertoburromiapanino2659 - Very true, however it is good to now know what I've done to rectify these issues so I have a good base to work with. Yes for sure, the Bandit is simple and easy to maintain. I have considered the GSXR cams but with speed limits every decreasing here in NZ, the stock engine is more than enough. Unfortunately.... Thanks for your comment and watching my video :)

Silicone based is better suited to hot climates, whilst glycol based be better suited to colder climates. Don't blend the 2.. One or the other.
@antonyhoch - totally correct in what you say! Never blend also.
