      I'm a first time rider (squidlet) who literally just purchased a 2020 SV 650 ABS today, what a great video guys. One thing I think this video doesn't touch on at all is the MSRP of a standard 650 ABS is $1300 cheaper at $7,099. For a first time rider (or any rider) price can be a big factor in a decision. I know they are giving away the X version hence the comparison, but for me (and this guy Josh in the vid) the deal killer on the X were the clip-ons, I really preferred the standard bars and riding position (and price) of the regular SV 650. That being said Yammie's love of the SV 650 played a huge factor in me choosing it as my first bike.

    Many of my friends who started racing Sv's more than a decade ago are still racing SVs. , some of them in Moto America twins cup. Only a few who started on 600s or 1000s are still racing. 1st Gens with a good SB build and big flat slides are still killing it in club racing.

      I have a 2007 Naked! These are awesome bikes, it's my 3rd bike. 1st was a Suzuki GS500E, then a Honda ST1100 and now this SV650. Very happy. It has more power than the GS500 (70hp vs 40hp) but is still more flickable and light compared to the ST1100 (which has 100hp but weights 600lbs - I mainly use it now for when my fiancé and I go slow cruising together).

    I've been watching several of your vids as they aren't too bad. I have been riding for close to 40 yrs now - All street. Plus I spent many years with my own business as a riding instructor.
    One thing that stands out is why do you guys not use all your gears. A lot of the bikes you ride are 6 speed and 5 at a min.
    Yet you sit in 3rd or 4th for long distances at speeds where you really should be up in top. Firstly it will be easier on your fuel consumption.
    Importantly it will be crucial to the life of the engine as an engine and gears are designed to be driven with a load on them.
    I know there are two sides to the thinking the gear does the speed and in a lower gear it is more responsive.
    That is why you downshift to get to the right gear to make it move.
    The thing that isn't so good for them is there is a tolerance in each and every bearing. Whether it is a roller or shell bearing they are designed for oil flow and to have working pressure loaded on the bearing. When you sit in a low gear at speeds that it should be upshifted to top. It has several moments where the engine has its turning parts loose and you are getting microscopic movements that are allowing it to move to positions it isn't meant to go, essentially floating.
    This accelerates wear in the bearings over time.
    Staying in a lower gear at speed also makes it twitchier and harder to maintain constant acceleration or coasting as the tiniest of bumps will often have you slightly opening or closing the throttle depending how tight you really shouldn't be hanging on to the controls. Thus also wearing your chains and sprockets before time too.
    Getting to top gear gets your bike working smoother and with the designed load on all the internals. It also helps with your skill of knowing what gear is the right gear for the right occasion.

    A few weeks ago, I was out testing 2019 models of both the regular SV650 and the SV650X. My impressions were kind of the same. While the sportier riding position of the clip-ons on the X made it feel aggressive and fun in a different way, it quickly became uncomfortable. It reminded me a lot of my old R6 in that way, fun for short bursts but I wouldn't want to go for rides longer than an hour on it.
    I ended up settling on the regular SV650 with the upright bars and the dark grey/red frame color combo. I preferred the look of the regular model a bit more and after looking online, there are plenty of options to convert the handlebars to a more sporty ergonomic setup like the X, if I decide to go that route later.
    Something not mentioned in this video: the seat on the X looks different and has slightly more padding in it than the regular model, which some people might appreciate. The regular SV650 also lacks the pre-load adjustment on the front forks like the X, if that's something you care about.

    Bought one a year ago as my first bike, no complaints, easy to learn on, and now that I’ve been riding for a while I’ve pushed it a lot more and I still haven’t reached its full potential. The only thing I’d say is on long rides it does tend to become uncomfortable on my wrists, so if anyone has a tip for that lmk. Otherwise great bike, love that VTwin sound

    • @rlema1
      @rlema1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, same here, you need to train your "six pack" and legs to get some equilibrium and not to put all your weight on your wrist, for that agressive position. Last week had my first long trip on this bike and just loved it! before that, only city and with covid, very few rides, my back hurts, so, some muscle training and its really better now.

      Get aftermarket clips ons. I haven't found any that raise up, but if you just take the angle off. I think these might be 10 degrees and you can find them all the way to zero. Makes a huge difference in comfort. I haven't actually done this yet, but that was always the first thing I did on my R1's. I will be doing this in the next week or so. I can't put if off any longer. Also had my seat re done with gell insert. So comfortable now. I used to get them from Heli. Heli bars, but not sure they make them for this bike, but trust me, it will change your ride and you will be able to ride longer. Without making you bike look lame either because they are still clipped on below the top triple tree.

    The SV650 is a great bike, not just a great beginner bike. I've been riding for 10 years and used to own the 1st gen, I now own a 2017 and it's mostly a great improvement. The engine has less character, the seat is hard as fuck but otherwise it handles way better. For commuting it's pretty much the same bike although the clutch assistance is pretty cool sometimes. But here lies the problem; You're riding it on straight lines here in the US,while I'm riding it on the twisty back roads of the french riviera, and being an experimented rider the new one is night and day, it handles SO much better. Overall the SV is a fantastic bike for experimented riders who wanna keep their license, it's cheap, fun, handles pretty well, is reliable and a great commuter.

    • @rlema1
      @rlema1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      agree, I went from a MT03 to sv650x, and no way this is a beginners bike, the aggressive position calls speed and the weight it's a lot for a beginner. City Riding may be a little uncomfortable because the short turn angle also.

    • @the_hippykiller22
      @the_hippykiller22 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rlema1 I'd still say it's a good beginner bike though. The weight isn't too noticeable, it's very thin and easy to apprehend especially the regular version. I'm moving towards a Monster 1100 evo but it's still a nice bike even though it has less character than the old carb SV.

    I bought a 2001 (new) back in the day, loved it, I only sold it because I had a second kid and little time to ride. I picked up a couple more bikes a few years later, but man I can’t wait to get back on an SV, it’s a bike that is casual fun in a way that few other bikes get right. It has little to do with experience, I’ve been riding since 1999. It’s just fun.

    I thought that I wanted a SV650 or Mt-07, but found that the Kawasaki Z650 was more comfortable. The fact that I am short (5'6", 28" inseam) might have something to do with it. It might be down a couple of horsepower at the highest RPM's (according to an article I read), but it's not the kind of thing I am talented enough to notice.

      I have researched this to Uber nerd levels. This is pretty much the best bike you’re going to get for short riders since the seat is the lowest that I can see plus being a V twin it’s narrower. This makes a notable difference. My guess is if you’re 5’6” or over you’re probably good. Otherwise it’s dependent on how short your legs are. I’m 5 foot but I always wear regular length or at least 32 inch jeans so my legs are longer and added another inch boots. At this height though, I don’t have that much legs. It’s definitely doable, but because I’m a complete beginner I couldn’t start on it right away. Not even close to flatfoot or even balls of both feet, but on tippy toes. I learned how to ride on a grom which I can get my feet flat and move around pretty comfortably and currently still on it. Hoping to be more confident of managing a taller and heavier bike soon. I’m worried about going from Grom to this, but I can’t find really anything in between. A lot of people claim that should be something but what? Everything I find higher wider seats. (Obviously there are cruisers but that’s not what I’m looking for.). I hope this helps anyone who might be reading it.
      And yes a completely different thing to be able to manage the weight height and center of gravity and all of those things as a female. But guys will come and tell you they know exactly how it feels regardless...

    I would suggest that new riders check insurance rates in their state/province before buying a motorcycle. Where I live insurance rates are based on engine displacement. Under 400cc it's least expensive, and there are 3 more classes 400-750cc, 751-1150cc, and over 1150cc being as expensive as car insurance. My current ride is 1167cc, so being just over the line for the top class, has it's disadvantage of being really expensive.

      I have an SV650X model. Not my first bike by any means. Have had 6 sport bikes including two R1's, and two BMW dual purpose 650GS. By far this is my favorite bike. It is a great beginner bike but it is also every bit of bike you need especially if you ride really tight twisty roads like the canyons in Colorado for example, or the Tail of the Dragon in TN. It is much more user friendly and I have no problem keeping up with a liter bike in a tight twistie road. I usually pass them because they just can't handle the really tight corners as well. So many wave me around them because they feel pressured because I am on top them in the corners.

    Probably picking one of these up in the next few months. I love my f650gs, and chucking it down dirt roads is fun out here in the desert, but riding it at 80mph on the freeway for my commute is very tiring and the bike is really straining at that high rpm.

    • @paddyjay3364
      @paddyjay3364 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have owned two 650GS. Loved them except for the 5 speed trany was limited when it came to passing on pavement. I've owned two R1's in the past but last year I picked up a SV650X. Same color as this video. I absolutely love this bike. I don't miss the power of the R1 at all. I find this bike more fun to ride and I can keep up with liter bikes in the Colorado canyons no problem at all. In fact the tighter the corner the more I have to brake, because the liter bikes have to slow down so much I'm always right on top of them in the corners. They often wave me past lol. Think I put to much pressure on them. I find myself passing them all the time on my group rides. Terrific engine braking and the sound of the V Twin. Yummy. Especially with the pipe I have. Not sure I want to share that information lol. No one else has one. I shopped overseas. I see your post is a year old. I hope you found one and am enjoying it.

    That 2000 SV650 appears to have a fork swap. Don't remember them ever getting USD forks, at least not here in Oz. The clipons on the SV650X are still pretty high, being above the top yoke like risers.

    A 160/60 tire isn't really much more limiting than a 180/50. Just about every sport and sport touring tire has a 160/60 option.

    5" rear rim so you could in theory put a 180 rear on it. A 160 on a 5" rim will be rather stretched and therefore run a flatter profile.

      It's funny they keep calling this a beginner bike. It is definitely beginner friendly but this bike is a blast. I have a 2019 SV650X. It's not my first bike by any means but it's my favorite. My first was an EX500, then a VF4 700. Have had numerous full on sport bikes including 2 R1's . I will say that this 650 is much, much better in tight corners than my R1. I rode my R1 on The Tail of The Dragon and it was way too much bike. I plan on bringing the 650X soon. I live and ride in the Colorado Canyons and feel much more at ease on my SV. I keep up with liter bikes no problem and often need to pass them because they can't take tight corners near as fast as I can. So many of them wave me around them because in the corners I am right on top of them. So if you ever feel the need to move up, think about that. It's way more than a beginner bike if you know how to use its power. Sure the front suspension could be inverted and beefyer. But that is my only complaint. Looking for a wrecked GXR 600 or 750 and put the forks on it. Then the bike will be perfect.

  • @yonniboy1
    @yonniboy1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The MT-07/XSR700 is a more exciting fun bike but the SV handles better, the Z650 has less power than both the Yams and SV but its electronics package and TFT is much more advanced, IMO the CB650 is realistically in a different class from the others.

    I bought this in mid 2019. I really like the way it sounds and looks, but on the freeway, I feel it’s trash. I’m not a rider who prefers an aggressive feel, so that was my first mistake. I just couldn’t get over how gorgeous she is. But I too, don’t like riding it long.

      I have one. Got the seat re done with gell and I am searching for aftermarket clip ons. Remove some of the angle, maybe find some taller. I always put aftermarket clips on my R1 first thing and I thought the R1 was comfortable and I could ride for 4 to 5 hours no problem. Looking forward to new clip on for my 650X

    Asking 8k for a starting bike with no TC, outdated screen, halogen light bulbs and no quickshifter (compared to competition) and in some cases no ABS is crazy. Crazy to think that the Hornet 750 costs just less than 8k and for the same price you can get heated grips and 2 suitcases... I dunno, sometimes I think Suzuki thinks of themselves as something higher, forgetting their humble beginings.

    I love that classic looking seat on the X. When you see the standard version next to the x in the showroom its hard not to want to spend a little extra coin. Just wish it came in different colors.

    • @paddyjay3364

      I love my 2019 SV650X. Favorite bike overall, and I have had lots of different sport bikes over the last 34 years. Including 2 R1's. I think the 650 is a much better bike in tight corners over the R1. Live in Colorado and I rip the canyons on my SV 1 or 2 times a week. So the seat. It looks great. The X model looks great, I have the same color. Black and white, but this seat is the most uncomfortable seat I have ever sat on. One hour kills you, but you do get used to it. Now I ride 150 to 175 miles per ride. But I most definitely plan on bringing my seat in to be redone. We have a great company in Denver does them. So soon I will have gell under that brown cover. Can't wait.
