How do you do a whole show on Cyprus and not mention that it was a British colony? Like many British colonies there was a very badly executed transition to independence resulting in war.

@@jordanpearce1947 the point is that Cyprus had intercommunal violence before the 1974 invasion as a result of British policies (divide and rule). That's why the peacekeeping force has been in Cyprus since 1963. Many Turk Cypriots recieved police, government, and better positions in order to keep Greek Cypriots down low enough that they wouldn't have the power to successfully revolt. It was a colonial tactic used in Lebanon and Rwanda causing violent ethnic and religious clashes. Cyprus experiences both ethnic and religious differences along with a heap of social and political issues that logic places blame on Turkey. Treaty of Guarantee was used as a ploy to Turkey's advantage where it abused its rights as a guarantor and exceeded limits implemented to avoid Cyprus from spiraling into conflict. On the other end, Greek Cypriots felt it was counter productive and unrealistic to give so much power to a small minority causing amendments to the constitution that favored Greek Cypriot policies further straining relations between the two groups. The was also enosis and other foreign interest that caused and halted the issues. Security guarantees are the biggest issue that keeps halting any peace agreement that would see a unified Cyprus without illegally occupation. I believe the treaty allows for either 650 or 950 Turkish soldier on Cyprus not the up to 30,000 believed to be present.
The history is older than the problems the British caused but Britain has also strived in recent years to create a peace even if it meant the United Kingdom relinquishing its guarantor status while ceding some territory possessed in Cyprus if it were to help produce a viable peace.

Jordan Pearce, British were part of that reason with poor relations, understanding of the two groups and bad administration. They also betrayed Cyprus, allowing a Turkish invasion. They did the same in India when they partitioned the land and abruptly left.

Cyprus as one state is just a farce. A more radical version of Belgium IMO. Just divide it in two and hand over the Greek part to Greece and the Turkish part to Turkey. This will calm down the tension between Greece and Turkey and this will also end a big tax haven for Russian oligarchs.

  • @mariosathens1
    @mariosathens1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +97

Let's see what Turkey demands from the Cypriots in order to agree with the reunification of the island-state. It is easy to understand why Cyprus is still divided.
    - only a part of the war refugees will be allowed to return back to their properties in the Nothern occupied part of Cyprus. The rest will stay in the free South and their properties will be given to Turk settlers.
    - A part of the Turkish Army will remain forever on the island
    - Turkey will keep its Guarantor rights over the island despite the fact that G.Britain and Greece don't want to be Guarantors of Cyprus anymore.
    - The TurkCypriot community (18% of the island's population) will have a VETO power to all the decisions of Cyprus Republic
    - The Presidency will change every 1 year between a TurkCypriot and a GreekCypriot
    - Cyprus has to accept the Turkish Theory about maritime borders and she has to surrender a part of the Cypriot sea regions to Turkey
It is easy to understand that this "Deal" doesn't lead to an independent, normal and European Cyprus but to a puppet state of Turkey. Ankara spread the fairytale that the Turkish Army is on the island-state to protect the TurkCypriot community but the truth is that Ankara wants to have control over the island and doesn't care at all for an independent Cyprus.

First of all, for the Guardian, there is no northern Cypriot government. There is only one country in Cyprus and it is the recognized by every nation on the planet and it is the republic of Cyprus. Second as a young Cypriot who did his service in the military I believe that we still need it especially now with Turkey becoming more assertive and aggressive in the region. Now, i can relate to the ideological opposition of the military in every country or war between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. This is the last thing I want. A war is only pain and death. My dream ever since I was a kid was to see my country reunited, and that definitely includes the Turkish Cypriots. We are more similar than you realize. Nevertheless, as long as the north part of my country is a puppet of Turkey the solution will not come. Turkey has become an authoritarian country with censorship on the press and a strong military industrial complex. They are becoming less democratic and more aggressive.History proved that those two don't go well together.

Those people on both sides who demand that everyone should be forced to do military service, do they really think it’s wise to have a significant portion of people in their military who are only there because they’ve been dragged into it? What use would such individuals be as soldiers in combat? If you’re going to have a military force then surely it makes more sense for every soldier in it to actually WANT to be there. Open up a book and read history then. Greece had a junta government who supported Greek nationalists in Greek colony of Britain. UK released the nation and made both Turkey, Greece and UK as protector nations. When Turkey asked for international help and intervention against the mass murders and ethnic cleansing of Turkish settlements in Cyprus nobody cared for years. So Turkey used it's right to intervene. Despite getting trade restrictions from both NATO and Warsaw Pact.

3:15 - it's not "inter-ethnic". The last genetic study has shown that the Greek and Turkish speaking Cypriots are genetically extremely close, almost identical and share more similarities than with their respective "mainland country" (Greek Cypriots with Greeks and Turkish Cypriots with Turks). So ethnically speaking, they are all Cypriots, I wouldn't refer to it as "inter-ethnic" conflict. The conflict is religion, language and politics-ideology. Not ethnicity.

Once again the British present this as an issue of conflict between so called Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities, that will be resolved if the two communities discuss and agree on a common path and cohabitating way of life. However the truth is that Turkey invaded and grabbed land from Cyprus, and still holds it illegally. The occupation is illegal under international law, amounting to illegal occupation of European Union territory since Cyprus became its member. This issue needs to stop being presented as one of conflict between two communities, otherwise it will never be resolved. The only possible solution is Turkey removes their army and returns the land back to the Republic of Cyprus.

1- After conquered in 1571, Cyprus was
declared a province (Eyalet) of Turkey. Turks ruled the Island as part of the
Turkish Empire from 1571 until 1878. In 1878 Turks leased the Island to UK with
a convention. On 5 November 1914 the British abrogated the convention and
    annexed Cyprus.
2- There has never been in Cyprus a
"Cypriot nation", what exists is two distinct peoples on the Island,
namely the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots. This being so, any approach
to the Cyprus question which regards Cypriots as one nation is incorrect.
3- The partnership Republic formed in
1960 between the two peoples of Cyprus broke down in 1963 and since the Turkish
intervention in 1974 Greek and Turkish Cypriots live apart, each secure in its
own sovereign territory and each with its own customs, traditions and identity.
4- Two separate and sovereign states in
the Island is the best solution and it has already been achieved. What needs to
be done is to stop the international acceptance of the Greek Cypriot regime as
the government of all Cyprus and to recognize the Turkish Cypriot state in the
north as a separate and legal political entity.
5- The claim that the Cyprus problem
was caused by the landing of Turkish troops in 1974 and that if only they would
withdraw, the problem would be solved is not correct. This is a just a
misconception, for the Cyprus question began in 1960 and the landing of Turkish
troops was the consequence, not the cause, of the problem. In fact the legal
intervention of Turkey as a guarantor was and still is what stopped the
    bloodshed in the island.
6- Turkey is not an invader in Cyprus
but the guarantor and the protector of the Turkish Cypriots. One should
question why the existence of Turkish troops disturbs Greeks and Greek Cypriots
so much yet neither are disturbed by the British existence. Furthermore they
    invite other foreign powers too.

I didn't expect this to be solely about conscientious objection, should have been stated in the title. Interesting nonetheless.
It's beyond any doubt that both sides in Cyprus need a military at this point in time, even the Republic of Cyprus. I frankly don't see a system where you can just pick and choose yourself if you go to the military or not, how is that fair for everyone else? If a small group refuses to enlist and they are allowed to walk free, then what is stopping everyone else from doing the same? A professional military would of course be a solution, however I do not think people understand quite how expensive and ineffective that is compared to mandatory conscription.
As someone why was in the military roughly two decades ago, through mandatory conscription, I can say that for the majority of the time it was productive and educational. It also most certainly prepares you for adulthood through responsibility and various skills that you will never learn within four walls in a city.
