(@1:25): Seeing Watt choke-up after explaining his getting into being a musician was simply because he wanted to be around his best friend (D. Boon, I'm assuming) was such a humanizing moment to witness -- this man is still grieving the loss of this friend of his after all these years (more than three decades)!
Back when fIREHOSE first started, they did a tour opening for Sonic Youth. I was standing in the audience and Kim was standing right next to me. She was watching Watt on stage and had this look of appreciative awe and amazement on her face and I swear she had a woody. After the gig, before the Yutes came out, I wandered to the side of the stage and Watt was standing there by himself. I went up and told him how glad I was that he decided to keep playing and touring, and in the space of about half a minute he just broke down and started sobbing about D. Boon, his brother, and how much he missed him. I was just a dumb punk kid...I didn't know what to say. The guy was really torn up. The next time I saw fIREHOSE they played right on the floor of the room...I was so close I could have reached across the cymbal and grabbed George by the bangs or reached out and plucked Mike's bass. Needless to say, great memory of one of the best shows of my life.
Firehose was one of my first bands I got to see live and up close. I loved them all as players, but even as a drummer you couldn't keep your EARS off of Mike's bass playing. So rhythmic and inventive in his lines to what Ed was counter playing. Almost like a Jaco meets John Entwhistle I thought. Super nice guy as well, the whole band hung out with my skater buds after the show at San Jose state. Good guys. Just listen to the bassline on "Brave Captain". Holy F is that amazing.
