The trio mssv is an underground supergroup. They’re not playing the local enormodome, but each musician has a storied career and the ability to leap musical conventions in a single bound, even while rocking like hell … or playing compositions with sections that ricochet from Coltrane to Martian terrain.
The group sprung from guitarist Mike Baggetta’s dream of an ideal, omnivorous band-one that could navigate any kind of musical or sonic path, much as Baggetta has done himself, whether playing with other artists or solo. His first choice of bassist was Mike Watt, a legendary indie music figure who has been releasing daring rock and improv albums for decades, starting with the highly influential ’80s and ’90s outfits the Minutemen and fIREHOSE. And while mssv’s debut album, 2019’s Wall of Flowers, was recorded with the foundational rock drummer Jim Keltner, Keltner’s disinterest in touring caused Baggetta to seek a replacement in Stephen Hodges, one of the few sticks players who can match Keltner’s intention and a brilliant artist in his own right, with decades supporting Tom Waits, Mavis Staple, and other legends.
On the road behind their latest recording, Human Reaction (one of my picks for best albums of 2023), mssv stopped at the Blue Room in Nashville’s Third Man Records complex in late October, where their wily creativity ignited the place. But at soundcheck, Baggetta and Watt explained to the PG team exactly why they dig their rigs.

I love Mike Watt. He is an amazing inspiration.
41:06 "More trebly on the bass, and more bassy on the treble." Mike Watt is a genius the way he speaks, I could listen to him all day.
I've had the chance to interview Watt and he's totally on a different level from us. I wanted to just let him talk forever and felt guilty asking more questions.
Check out his podcast. Watt from Pedro.
YES! Mike Bagetta has been one of my absolute favourite guitarist the last couple of years!
Mike Watt and the rest of the fIREHOSE guys, Ed Crawford and George Hurley, stayed at my house in Glasgow, Scotland in June ‘87 after they’d played with Sonic Youth . I was bootlegging both bands, and during Sonic Youth’s set I realised Mike was standing right next to me in the middle of the crowd, watching them! Normally I wouldn’t speak to anyone while I was recording but this is Mike bloody Watt!! So obviously I had to say something to this man, it’s not every day you get the chance to talk to a member of Minutemen in Scotland!
So I told him I was a a huge fan etc etc and he asked me if I knew anywhere his band could stay for the night, so obviously I said “Yeah! You can stay at mine!”
They were all cool as f*ck, signed all of me and my brother’s fIREHOSE and Minutemen albums and singles, and Mike showed me how to play “Corona”, one of my favourite Minutemen tunes!
I still have those tapes I made of the fIREHOSE and Sonic Youth sets, complete with my in-the-crowd conversation with Mr Watt!
Post it on TH-cam!
Right on my man, George is my drummer now! I'm Pedro!
This is the best decision for a rundown in a while. We all wanted to know for so long! I can hear Watt talk for hours. Great job with it PG!!!
Thanks!
Watt is the best! I hadn't spoken to him in over a decade, so was incredibly psyched to see him again!
I saw Watt and his group in 2020. Man they were freaking amazing! His drummer joined my buds and me outside for a joint. Great night.
Mike Watt is a national treasure, also if you name drop Sonny Sharrock then I'm interested
Sonny was a great musician and a great friend. I loved that guy!
@@teddrozdowski7912 hearing the space ghost coast to coast theme song made me want a guitar as a kid
Nice to see Ted do a rig rundown!
Thanks! I've got a couple more coming up!
Best bass episode ever!
Great interviews! Mike Watt is such a great person. We have always enjoyed meeting him on his tours in Cambridge, Mass. Always a fun time meeting the entire band and participating in sound check. :)
well, I have a new all-time favorite rig rundown. incredible. I keep a set of Watt's stage-used strings on the wall of my recording space in my basement. One of my most cherished possessions.
D’Addario?
Excellent rig rundown! I always learn so much from these. Informative and entertaining. Thanks for doing them!
Mike Watt is brilliant. I love him!! What a human being. the vid was too short
great stuff. always fun to see musicians coloring outside the normal lines, immersed in guitar texture.
I read in mike watts tour diary that this happened and was waiting for it. thanks so awesome!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Holy shit! I love this band, and I’ve been lucky enough to see them live. Amazing.
where did you catch them live?
On the subject of amps, I remember Watt saying in the 90’s: “Old man punk is small shit with wheels”. I’m an old man now and he was totally right! ✌️❤️
You sir are not alone .
Fantastic run down! Watt and Bagetta are incredible musicians.🎸🎶🎵🔊
Couldn't agree more!
Saw these fine fellows at the Mercury back in October. Great show and opening act Shellshag was awesome.
I played with them when they stopped in Montreal. What an amazing band, the dynamics, the skills of bagetta, the god damn thump of watt and the character of hodges drumming were incomparable. Each one of them was so nice and mike gave me tips with my own rig. Watt loved our band and invited us to his radio show even though we're a small ass band from across the border. These guys are legends but they're so damn generous.
I’ve seen a million Mike Watt interviews, and this is the most amazing by far. I’ve never heard him get so excited about his gear before!
He’s a national treasure
I think we've found my new favourite guitar player, and I would probably not have watched the video if it weren't featuring Mike Watt
My son and I saw MSSV on the last two years tours, in Pittsburgh, and enjoyed them both times ! Enjoy talking with these guys as well as hearing them play. They are also friendly with signing things and getting photos with them. Always fun to spiel with Watt at The Boat ! The energy these guys have on stage and on the road is unsurpassed......... They will play all across the U.S., and do like 50 shows in 50 days. Who does that ? And in a van and sleeping at fan`s homes..........And they ain`t kids no more, either..........Watt and Hodges especially. We try and catch Watt with whoever he is touring with, on any given year. Ed fROMOHIO Crawford usually comes by to see Watt and play encore(B.O.C.`s The Red & The Black)with Watt too in Pittsburgh !
I've not seen them but thanks to RIG RUNDOWN these guys are definitely on my to see list. So very cool , I can't wait. Thanks guys.
Our pleasure!
Been following @MikeBaggetta for years -- he's a jazzer, of course, as are his early albums, and I dig him! Saw this trio last year at a "heavy metal" bar in town, and got to meet Mike -- super-cool cat! The gig was a blast, and the crowd was SO into it! Thanks for doing this gear run-down!
Mike Watt, what a guy! Hilarious, passionate, informative.
Mike Watt in any band is an absolute *monster*
Wall of Flowers is a beautiful album
23:23 Wow, John is seriously rivaling Josh Scott in pedal collection!
"This thing hangin' off your headstock looks stupid." Truer words were never spoken.
Great way to start the New Year-fantastic band!!!
The Warden is such an amazing and underrated optical compressor. It makes everything sound better.
nice
Glad to see Ted back on Rig Rundown!
THE RING THING IS AWESOME...IT DOES A GREAT UNIVIBE IMPERSONATION TOO!
100%
Love it! Great to hear the whole backstory Mike W - thanks for sharing! Glad the HP2 is getting the job done for you. Hopefully I'll be able to catch one of your shows!
Man, when Mike started talking about his bass he really came alive. I was reflecting on his advancing age shown on his face until then. But all concerns were allayed as soon as Watt got into his rhythm as speaker. Hasn't lost a step.
Anyone peep the overwound strings on Watts Bass? I'm guessing in theory it is adding a little mass to the headstock.
Love Watt so much, artistic inspiration since forever, and tech knowledge. Solid.
Impressed by Watt’s knowledge of bass history. He is the first person I have heard state correctly that Leo could play music, he just didn’t play a stringed instruments. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard someone say incorrectly, “Leo couldn’t play a note.”
I never listened to Mike Watt’s music but I’ve always had a lot of respect for him, absolutely killer bassist and a punk legend as well
Fuggin love Mike Watt!
Loudest show i ever saw was Mike Watt open for Primus in 1993
By the way, near the end of the video, the bass line Watt plays when he goes through the different pickup configurations is from "Whisperin' While Hollerin'," from the fIREHOSE record "fROMHIO."
31:52
This is one of the greatest interviews ever!!
I never knew that about the P-Bass name origin.
But the
“Everyone called the electric bass a 4 string guitar when it was invented. No! 4 string DRUM SET!! What’s the closest note? KICK DRUM!”
He’s full of gems
Mike’s signature Reverend is my ideal bass….short scale and powerful with it! Those things kick ass!!
Mike Watts rig is very up to date cutting edge bass stuff, I must confess I’m surprised. There’s a lot of stuff there that you hear praise about on online forums but never see on actual stages, where old fender and ampeg still rules. I mean, Broughton and Sushi, in a Bergantino rig, there’s some real Talkbass vibes there 😂
Grandpa Watt.. I was waiting for him to offer you a butterscotch lol
Love Watt. A total legend and legendary good dude.
WATT!
Appreciate the tech talk and the bass tips from Watt - he's a big heavy in my book, but he talks like a regular guy.
Heck yes cool one!
Mike Watt is such a trip 😂😂..and he reeeally loves Leo Fender.
Watt RULES!
Sonny Sharrock shout out!
Watt is the best. Love this dude!
Love Mike Watt! I’d carry his damn cab any day.
WATT RULES!!!!!!!
Aye!
✊
Lovely chats. Ted Drozdowski is one cool dude.
Are we going to talk about Watt's string winding or... (24:40)
Wow...I'm also getting old (pushing 50) but how well does Mike Watt (a teenage hero of mine) play the part of the creepy uncle who leans in too far? Bands of the SST era were not known for their rig tone...just the Fort Apache sound. Love this guy, but also creeped out by his "I'm not there" mentality. You can kinda see it in the interview.
Mooooo !
Brother Watt says, "If you're not Playing, You're Paying.."
W A T T
He jams econo
#wattisgod
Watt could be an electrician if this music thing don't work out.
when ur machines disregard ur pronouns is never desireable. The Mikes !
៏
Worst episode ever
Says the guy with a lame Christmas music video. So Metal! 😂
I'm sure PG will be calling you soon to be on the program.
Rude !!
You’re a fool !
Yeah most shitty people wouldn’t like this episode
