The choreography and costumes are derived from the movie “ Gentleman Prefer Blondes” with Marilyn Monroe singing “ Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend”.

Investors might be interested to know that the movie's title was derived from a famous quote from decades earlier: "Gentlemen prefer bonds." --- Andrew Mellon (very wealthy banker, financier and Secretary of the Treasury under three U.S. presidents).

Madonna came from out of nowhere and skyrocketed to fame like a shooting star. She broke big on R&B radio. He first two albums were primarily produced by veteran R&B producers Reggie Lucas (Mtume-Lucas productions: Mtume, Stephanie Mills, Roberta Flack, Donnie Hathaway) and Nile Rogers (Chic, Sister Sledge, Diana Ross). She later moved toward a Disco/Club/Dance sound. ‘83-‘86 was an interesting time in music. Driven by the desire for play on MTV and advances in technology (synthesizers were smaller, lighter, portable, and easier to play than the big bulky ones of the ‘70s) R&B, Pop, and dance music began to blend together.

Well, I would say the song is a parody (even with the high pitch voice) of the 80s materialism, but at the end she went with the simple guy!
In the video she reproduces the musical number ""diamonds are a girl best friends" performed by Marilyn Monroe in "Gentleman prefer blondes", a Anita Loos roman which made a parody of the gold-diggers! and Madonna is not a gold-digger, she worked hard for her money!
But the song was so huge in the 80s that the press started to call Madonna the Material girl, and I think she was upset that they didnt understand the parody on it, because she never sang the song again till 2015!

I loved her her first few albums the best. Papa don’t preach and true blue are still my favorite songs. Those first few albums are great all the way through. After that it was only one or two per album.

Such a good song! Please react to Vanity--Pretty Mess haha! You'll think she's a mess. "Vogue" "Express Yourself" "Rescue Me" "Justify My Love" are good too!

This is the first time i heard about Madonna early 80's when her career started I'm 47 and she was very huge at 80's i think her and Michael Jackson were dominating the music industry in that particular of time.

1984. She would have been 25, 26 there. I was a teenager and she was my crush.

I don't think "kids today" understand how big Madonna was in the day. She was HUGE. Lady Gaga is still not as big. And this was the song that broke her into the big time.

Despite the video making it clear that she wasn't materialistic, the press couldn't help constantly calling her "The Material Girl" anyway.

She’s channeling Marilyn Monroe here from “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”

This is a very catchy song but you’re exactly right Asia. Songs like this contributed to the attitude of the generation today. That they’re all worthy of the top 10% wage earners who have to be 6 feet plus and handsome. Anybody below that standard is unworthy of them. Sure at the end of the song she went out with the poor guy but nobody remembers that. They remember the material girl part.

5:15 She may be singing the song but she did not write it. It was written and composed by Peter Brown and Robert Rans.
