Yes, it does have a salsa vibe and you can dance salsa to it. Yes, it has an island vibe and a Spanish vibe at the same time. Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic, are all islands and Spanish-speaking countries, so you get the best of both worlds. Great song and great vibe
Per Songfacts "La Isla Bonita" means "The Beautiful Island" in Spanish. In the song, Madonna sings about the beautiful island of San Pedro, where she longs to be. San Pedro is not a real island. In a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, Madonna said, "I don't know where that came from. I don't know where San Pedro is. At that point, I wasn't a person who went on holidays to beautiful islands. I may have been on the way to the studio and seen an exit ramp for San Pedro."

You need to delve deeper into her catalog. It is the most critically acclaimed of any female artist ever, and is an absolute monolith. Guilty pleasure has nothing to do with it.

It’s a cool song. But…. culturally, the song is more gypsy Spanish than island 🏝️ flavor. She mixes a bunch of things culturally. The song references zamba which is Brazilian. She then references the desert which is not island 🏝️, it’s more south western California / Mexico; not Island music. But nice song.

I know that I’m late to this reaction but to talk more about the video content… Madonna didn’t make a black Jesus.. in the Catholic religion there was a
One black Saint that was persecuted for his good deeds based on his skin color… he was not Jesus. Madonna unexpectedly came upon the church and went inside for safety… so wardrobe wasn’t going to be accordingly proper… she walks in and see the Saint who should be a innocent figure idol so why is he behind the bars.. so it became a comparison to the innocent black man… Madonna was Black Lives Matter before it existed.. Madonna always spoke about racism to black and brown people.. this was her protest at the time it was and still is happening in the world… this was pre-Rodney king beating… Madonna will always speak the truth and at this time interracial couples was a major taboo back then known as “Jungle Love”so she put the kiss in the video… she wasn’t kissing the Saint … people were not ready to face the truth, that racism existed you think we have it bad now, but back then it was even worse and you think it would really not that long ago that people thought that way even about interracial dating… if you understand, symbolism, you would definitely understand this video and its story. Most people just look at the images and took a negative feeling towards it… this video is ICONIC

My mom couldnt stand Madonna,i guess she found her too much (especially the vulgar,triple x provocative style she had). But then she noticed this song,and her mind changed completely. La Isla Bonita and Papa Dont Preach became 2 of her favourite songs of alltime. She even ended up buying Madonnas greatest hits on VHS to me,wich really showed how much she changed her mind around. When my mom had her mind set on something,it was close to impossible to change her mind. Earlier she tried to "shield me" from certain Madonna videos and such,so for her to buy me that collection says ALOT. I cant really watch it anymore but i still have it,it means so much to me still to this day,i still have it somewhere. And besides,its a dear memory i have left from her. Cancer took her way too early from me and this earth. That also speaks volume on Madonnas behalf,she was able to open moms eyes and mind,and turn her over. Now granted she was still not very positive towards Madonnas "provocative nature",but i guess it was too much to make her see it from Madonnas side. Madonna had a plan with everything (she still has)
