It is funny how many people miss how Madonna (in the video) wasn’t impressed by expensive gifts & wanted someone down to earth but the song labeled her “the material girl” a reference Madonna has never cared for as she was stating that everyone was into materialistic things but even in the video Madonna was saying she wanted the opposite. It has a great meaning when understood correctly. The material girl was the actress during her scenes but she didn’t want those things in her personal life.
Probably coz it's their first listen that they miss it 😁
The video is an homage to Marilyn Monroe's famous Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend number. It's almost identical to it. Material Girl is a fun song. One of Madonna's biggest hits in the 80's. So glad you're doing more Madonna reactions. You're in for a lot more treats where she comes from!

At the time (1984) this felt like a really fresh take on Marilyn’s “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend” from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. It’s such a clever and cheeky movie. Well worth a watch. So many good lines.

Madonna in this video was paying homage to early Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe who played a materialistic starlet in the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes with Monroe’s song/dance number Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend. It’s one of Madonna’s early iconic images, one that she had revealed she regrets that people had misunderstood about her. She considers her performance of MG as more of a parody of materialism rather than an endorsement of a “gold digging” celebrity. In her first live concert performance of MG during the 1985 Virgin tour she clearly demonstrated towards the end of the number that she seeks a genuine, loving relationship with men and not wealth and fortune. Also, in her She’s Not Me number during her 2008/09 Sticky & Sweet tour, she again made it clear the MG image is not her in real life.

I’ll be 50 in over a week an British Indian guy growing up in Britain in the 1980’s was amazing, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, etc. glad to be in my preteens to teens when they were at their most powerful in the music industry.

But back then it was the tube we were glued to that truly played all music or music news only! No reality shows, dating games, etc. & I did grab some culture along the way! .... Its true!!😉

The song was supposed to be ironic. Madonna talked about regretting recording this song because people didn't seem to get it and she hated being referred to as 'the material girl'.
