A lot of the songs that enslaved people sang were codes to share with each other about escaping. It's little stuff like that that makes me appreciate these movies...contrary to popular belief, there really aren't that many movies about slavery and there are still SO MANY stories of resilience and ingenuity to tell.

No matter how "nice" slave owners were sometimes. It makes me sick to my stomach that a human thinks they can own someone, beat, rape, disrespect another human being bc of the color of their skin. Its easy for me to say i wouldnt put up that...but i did not live in that time period and cant even imagine what i would do or not do. These movies make me sick to my stomach. But i think its important to know the history.

    • @chrismittermuller5158

It nothing to do with race or colour of the skin it was mostly about money they raped n beat them because they have serious deep issues themselves it was African who sold their own people for money. White people have took white women as slaves killed their husbands n threw their babies over the castle walls these things was a regular thing before humans became civilised well kind of civilised things like this still happen today unfortunately

I guess it was just like owning livestock or pets. Some owners love their livestock even though they going to slaughter them after. At that case , I don't see it as hatred based. It is just like a natural process. Like when a lion hunt a deer, they don't hate the deer. It's intentional but not destructive. But some of them might have intentional purpose to hurt or destroy to cause pain just to release some of their...unbearable feelings? I would count that an abuse😅

    • @Browncoatful

I think that is what many today forget in that slavery was a way of life LONG before the US and other nations began buying African slaves from other Africans. I think it is also important to remember that history teaches us that slavery was not about race as multiple races, including whites, were slaves at one point. In fact, there is no nation or race today that has never practiced slavery OR been a victim of it.

True. Solomon himself had nothing but kind words to say about William Ford in his book. However, just because Solomon preferred Ford to what came after doesnt mean we as modern audiences cant morally condemn him.

Man, the power dynamics of the enslaved and owners being friendly is strange. The enslaved had to settle because they had nothing to fight back with. The owners treated the ones they liked as pets, not humans. It's crazy this happened.

The American of the South, having a Christian ethnic couldn't except the idea of owning another human being, so the rationale became, " these people aren't fully human." The complex dynamics of the cultural history of slavery and the result in one big island is displayed in the island split of Haiti and the DR. The Dominicans gradually dissolved slavery, while the Haitian threw it off in a Rebellion. Of course there were the Cultural influences of the Spanish in the DR and the French in Haiti that also effected their separate attitudes. Haiti's system was incredibly cruel, while the slavery structure in the DR was actually class driven, with actual inter marriage, not "cabin visits". So the Dominicans blended slavery out of existence, while the Haitians threw it off. Interesting Fact, the British were not the first to officially end slavery in the Western Hemisphere, but actually Mexico, by their Black President, Vicente Guerrero in 1829. The British like to brag on their false claim to be the first to end slavery, where even after their national end to slavery, they were huge supporters of the Confederacy. The system that supplied cotton, essential to their textile industry. In which they had entire families working on factory floors like "Slaves".

The comments (from MJ and viewers) just show how little we're taught about this period in American history. They didn't "just take it" There were over 250 uprisings that were documented. Its really important to educate ourselves about this period to understand how the legislation from this period has an effect on us today. (for example the electoral college) AND to differentiate between Black people's ACTUAL culture, and the remnants of trauma on ALL Americans. you can't treat your fellow human being this way and not be affected.

Something to keep in mind is that it could be that she knows that & that she’s saying some of these things for rage bait purposes to increase the volume of views and comment engagement for her channel. At the end of the day, this is a public platform and as such has opened herself to critique the same as some of those who are brown nosing. In this social media stuff it’s not about the content but a matter of grabbing the views. It’s all fraud at the end of the day.

Thanks for sitting through this again for your channel 😊 Yeah...this movie was wild and one of the few that didn't try to sugarcoat slavery to make certain people feel better about this country's REAL history. And yeah MJ, slaveowners absolutely used the bible to justify what they did, which is also why you might hear people constantly debate whether or not Black people should even believe in Christianity because of its use in slavery.
What was annoying AF, lol and almost made me hate Sarah Polson, was that the slaveowners' wives made themselves actually believe that female slaves wanted the "attention" they got from their husbands. How delusional do you have to be to run with that nonexistent narrative!?

It's sad that this day and age that people don't know the did difference between race and ethnicity. It's even worse that descendants from Spanish speaking countries always deny their black heritage by saying "I'm Puerto Rican" or Dominican. That's like a black man from the USA saying he's not black, he's American. It makes no sense, they want to be everything but black, but you can't change your DNA. Just like there are different races in the USA, there are different races in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic too. Ignorance shouldn't be embraced.

I really wish us black people would stop trying to force the black identity on everyone. Most Africans Americans have European blood, but you don’t see Europeans trying to remind us that we have their blood. Cut it out. She was raised thinking she was black because in Latino culture, she’s considered black or “Afro Latina” due to colorism, but she’s indeed a Biracial Latina. The culture only glorifies white and mestizo(ingenious/white mixed) Latinos. Ingenious, biracial(black/white or black/ingenious) and black Latinos are made to feel undesirable. To make it simple. Latinos that look like Mario Lopez, Sofia Vergara, Selena Gomez and Jennifer Lopez are glorified in the culture, while Latinos that look like Cardi B, Amara Le Negra and George Lopez are made to feel less than. Also, someone being dark skinned doesn’t make them black because black people aren’t the only racial group with dark skin. Your average South East Indian is darker than you, but that doesn’t make them black lol.

38:01 The "White Slaves" were known as "Indentured Slaves" and they most often were "European Immigrants" who entered into "Indentured servitude contracts" to pay for their passage to America. The contracts were usually for a certain amount of time depending on how much the fare was for safe passage to the "New World" and when they fulfilled it they were freed. There were times when "White People" entered into an indentured enslavement contract voluntarily to pay back a loan or debt repayment. Other times, enslavement was imposed involuntarily as a judicial punishment.

This is such a great film. It shows a lot of complexity you wouldn't expect to see in a film on this subject with a wide range of characters. Which it comes to the subject of slavery in America it's a must watch film. Similar to watching Schindler's List or The Pianist when it came to the subject of the Holoc**st. (and yes I had to censor that because youtube sometimes doesn't like that word being used)
I particularly like the drunk who betrayed Solomon. As it's similar to stories I've heard of war criminals who became heavy drinkers. Lets say the cruelty and violence they commit is haunting, and drinking is the only way to hide from it. It's likely why Fassbender's character is also a heavy drinker, and even tries to use religion to convince himself more than anyone else what he is doing is right. As I said they put quite a bit of complexity that I didn't expect to see in the film as a result. Yet he convinces no one else, not even his own wife who despises him in spite of her own cruelty.

    2. About the legality of slavery in the US, you just have to read the first part of the 13th amendment. It says that it's abolished EXCEPT as a form of punishment. Which technically means that it's still legal. At the same time there are some prisons that actually pay their prisoners. (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver did a piece on that on his TH-cam channel). It's a ridiculously low wage but at least they aren't doing the labor for free like in other places both inside and outside the US.
    3. I heard that Benedict Cumberbatch's family did not want him using his real name when he became an actor because his family at one point did get rich from slavery in Barbados.

No one is ever gonna see eye to eye on everything so if a person don’t like something that you say, they should talk to you in a respectful way instead of a negative one I personally think you should do, a Q&A and let people ask you questions because you said your mom raised you to think that you’re black but once you find out the truth, you changed yourself and it would be interesting to learn more about that

If you ever get the chance to visit New Orleans, please go to Whitney Plantation in Wallace, Louisiana. Its a museum and memorial dedicated to the history and culture of the enslaved. New Orleans was the largest domestic slave trading port with 52 places for auctions and sales. They are slave dwellings still erect in the French Quarters. At the same time its the most African influenced city in the continental USA and the most northern Caribbean city.

Lincoln freed the slaves of southern states which he had no control of but allowed slavery of the northern states. the war was about state rights, the population of the north was much higher and they could pass any laws they wanted. the Gettysburg address made the war about slavery. and the victor writes the history. i am against slavery but i studied this

do you hear or understand what you say?

I'm an immigrant from Belize and look like I'm damn near white in skin , but from my hair to my body shape I'm very black. Now you and me we're more mixed than American blacks but blood wise we're products of the same slave trade and colonialism. Check your history cause alot of us latins like to claim our European colonizers and try to raise our kids to be white and its sad we are taught to hate our black and native blood which is what makes us what we are. Speaking Spanish itself is a direct result of slavery. In conclusion you me and millions of others especially in central, the northern parts of South America, and all of the latin carribean islands, are decedents of african and native slaves.🙂

We are not white or fully black . It's just that alot of us like to hate or look down on each other that don't present themselves as white. Being black doesn't mean American. Which is what most people think of. Even pure Africans don't consider themselves black cause of that. Which is sad. Cultures are different and they can be very difficult to navigate just saying we as latin people in the americas shouldn't erase our african and native heritage is all I want to say.
