Its always a good idea to carry several options to defend yourself and a firearm should never be the first line of defense as most situations don't require lethal force. If you use lethal force as your first option, you're going to be spending a lot of time and money defending your actions to a judge and jury whereas using a less lethal option first makes it much easier to defend yourself if you have to use lethal force in the end because it shows you tried to deescalate first. I carry a taser with 700 lumen light when I'm out at night as well as pepper spray gel and leave my Byrna at home simply because I dont want someone to see it on my hip and think its a gun even though it's Orange in color.
According to the San Diego Police department and the Sheriff's department you can carry it, but if an officer sees it and stops you, you need to comply with them as they will be treating it like a gun until they can visually verify it as a less lethal launcher. They do not recommend buying them in Black or Grey because those colors make it very hard to visually verify its not a real gun which can result in a very bad day for everyone involved. That being said, each city has its own laws concerning air powered guns, but those laws are usually for under 18. It's up to the owner to know the state, county, and city laws before they buy any type of CO2 powered weapons, including pepper spray.

I have some questions. How far is the effective range of the kinetic ball? Does the heat from inside of the car have any possible damage to the gun or balls.

If your device uses high pressure air (HPA), CO₂, springs, air, or other means to propel pepper projectiles, those are illegal in California to public carry. Bottom line: The Kimber Pepper Blaster is illegal in California.

Sadly that's true now, but it wasn't always like that. Byrna had a program with the California BSIS which would allow Byrna owners to pay for and take the BSIS Chemical Certification Exam and then we'd be licensed to carry Pepperball rounds in the state the same as law enforcement and security guards, but Newsom changed the rules last Spring because too many people were taking the exam and it was a threat to the criminals who are running the asylum. Now you can only get the Kinetic rounds in California. You are allowed to use them to defend your property if someone tries to break in as well as to protect yourself according to the San Diego Police department and the Sheriff's department. After 28 years of living in California and serving on three different military bases I finally had to move my family out of state because it was just getting too dangerous and crazy to keep living there when the criminals are running things and the DAs refuse to hold them accountable for their crimes.

I also wish the Byrna had a different form factor at least as an option. I am not a gun person.

Then good luck being accurate... guns regardless of the projectile are accurate in " gun form " .

Pretty good option, as a CCW holder we should just be able to carry our guns, bottom line. SCOTUS needs to step in and smack down SB2.
