Welcome to today's video, in which we saw the renovation of a manual tobacco cutter.
This cutter is made of wood. cast iron and brass.
We estimate it to be in the 19th century.
I couldn't find the manufacturer, and I guess the origin is probably the USA.
This device was most likely used in households, but quite possibly also in tobacconists to process smaller quantities of tobacco leaves.
And now the question: What comes to mind when you think about the history of tobacco?
The Indians and their pipe of peace, and also Christopher Columbus, the discoverer who stopped smoking and it spread all over the globe.
In Europe, a Belgian botanist managed to grow tobacco for the first time in the middle of the 16th century.
Portugal became a growing power in Europe, followed by England, Holland, and finally cultivation reached the whole of Europe.
In 1783, the first tobacco factory was established in the town of Hodonín, and a year later in 1784, a tobacco monopoly was established based on the patent of Josef II. The tobacco factories were taken over by the state.
The production and sale of tobacco products was very profitable for the state and formed an important part of the state income.
Already in 1784, the profit from tobacco to the state coffers was over 3 million guilders.
And in 1850, the profit already exceeded 15 million guilders.
In 1843-44, the production of cigars was introduced in the Hodonín factory, the process was divided into two parts. First, the aging of tobacco leaves, where children worked mostly, and then the actual production of cigars, which was carried out mainly by men.
The first types of cigars were "Cabanos", "Havana" or "Estera".
At the beginning of the 20th century, both cigarettes and cigars became a social phenomenon.
They appeared abundantly in films, no party was complete without them, and during the war, generals required tobacco for soldiers as part of their paychecks.
And that's all from today's video.
Thank you for watching.

I know of US tobacco history. It was nice to hear about the European history. The work was impecable as usual!
This makes us both very happy Annette, thank you :)
What comes to mind when thinking about the history of tobacco is Swedish snus and that they were the first to make smokeless tobacco products in 1822. Loved this restoration.👍
Jason, thanks for the additional information :)

How clever for every cut of the knife the lever cachets the celery up just enough to make even-sized cuts. Thanks again and loved the little wink at the end! 😉

stylishly renovated. Soon you must have a small museum at home, with all the things you have renovated
Thank you Jerka. Yes, in the 15 years that I have been working on it professionally, a museum would already be filled. But for the most part, items for renovation are sent by customers.
radek my friend I have decided to elevate your restoration status to artisan restorer because every restoration you take on for a customer or yourself is done with care and consideration for the history of the item with full historical background provided by mrs veradona thankyou again my friend a wonderful item.😊
Thank you our friend, we both appreciate it very much :) Radek & Veronica

Congratulations Radek and Veronica, another masterpiece completed, with mastery.
a hug.
Thank you so much Jose Luiz :)
What a clever little machine! Beautifully restored, too.
Thank you so much :)
Here in Brazil, this piece would be much more useful, as tobacco consumption is being criminalized, now these tools can be used to chop foliage. And I mention here in Brazil because one of the famous accompaniments of feijoada is kale chopped into extremely thin strips, and this device would work perfectly for the function.
Kale, how very interesting.
Yes, it is the same here in the Czech Republic. I don't smoke, so I don't mind :)
Another quality restoration 😊
Excellent work as always thanks
Thank you Susie :)
Merci beaucoup :)
Wonderful restoration! A great use for Leeks, cabbage and other leafy greens !. Still quite handy. :)
I'm glad, thank you Debra 🤗
Great restoration and liked the historical background.
Thank you so much Larry :)
If there is something that fascinates me about watching the VERADONA videos, it is precisely that they are always elements that were mostly for daily use and many of which technology made obsolete.
However, its mere existence shows us how the human race evolved in its uses and customs and that, clearly, there is a romantic element in the completion of each restoration.
Always very grateful for such instructive and wonderful restorations.
Hugs and love to both.
Abrazos y cariños a ambos.
Gracias por el hermoso y alentador comentario. Abrazos Oscar :)

When my daddy was younger, about 13 Year, he had a small tobako plant. The art was "Wirginia". Now he is a bit older, but only 93. Still going strong. No, he don't soke. Regards Stig Österberg from Dalsbruk in Finland.
Thanks for your story Stig :)
🙋👍👏🥰Wow, great work 👍👏💪
Thank you Max :)
Je opravdu velmi krásný. Zejména gravírování. Když si uvědomíme, že v minulosti jsme k tomu potřebovali značkovací žehličku a dnes stačí použít laser.
A pokud nemáme tabák, je to perfektní kráječ zeleniny. 😂
Děkuji :) 👍
Nice. Cada vez melhores seus métodos de restaurações.
Estou muito feliz, obrigada Marcio :)
