  • National servicemen conscripted into the South African Defence Force used a language of their own. It was made up from Afrikaans, English, slang and techno-speak. Some of it was funny, some of it clever, and a lot of it downright crude.
In part one we give you the N to Z of some of the more common terms used.
Please note that the music for our intro was created using Music Maker Silver, a royalty free programme. So please do not try and tell us that you own the copyright to this.

The funniest moments were during guard duty in basics at the main gate. You had to salute anything up to Major and present arms to anyone with more rank. At dusk and at night we couldn't see into the rear of the cars driving up and saluted only to scramble to present arms as we realised it was the commandant 😅😂 By then the vehicle had sped off into the base! Must have been hilarious to those on board 🤣 (at least we didn't have to stand inspection for once!)

Step Outs was also used for any item deep fried in batter i.e spam or Ovambo piels in step outs. Fitter and Turner - Chefs - who take food fit for a king and turn it into crap. Flat dog was a term we used for crocs on the border (Sector 70) Flamgat was the nickname given to the the jet pilots. Fly Spy was a term used to describe the Medical Health Inspector usually hated by the medical officers as they had done years of study while he did a diploma in 2 years or so and got the same rank as them.

With that soutpiel one, it also shows how much they knew about Geography, because halfway between South Africa and England is land.
My father was an immigrant from Germany, and we only spoke English at home. Once in the Army someone called me a 'soutpiel'. So, I said 'Een voet in Duitsland ja' (One foot in Germany, yes.) That quickly shut him up, as it messed up that stereotype.

Carrots = ''nagsig'' refers to nightvision equipment to enable night observation ( it is believed that carrots improve one's eye sight, ) "chicken alla king'' military version off course = skrapnel which refer to the scrapnel of a bomb when it exploded, Red cross swiss pocket knive, which always made out part and parcell of our chrismas gifts while serving our country on the border = ''dankie tannie mes'' because these christmas gifts was organised by the woman back home, as to show their appreciation to the troops in them sacrafising safety and comfort. I have never again expierenced that same wonderfull level of comaradi, I suppose that is what happens when a group of people together shares a common goal , wat lekker saam afkak :-)

Don't know if you can recall the part about the SA defense guys saying they from the States? (Seen you posted long ago). The reason for that is because while the SA guys were fighting in the south of Angola, the CIA was helping the FNLA in the north, so on our side, and if captured, a SA guy would say he was American. However after 10 months the USA (Nixon) stopped all aid. So in a way you guys did try, but a shady president put an end to it. Nothing to apologize for!

Mogs. Short for flatbed Unimogs. Flatdogs. Slang for Crocodiles. We also called a one liner "n Blygemaakte troep" ( private soldier who has had a smile stuck on his face -- sort of ) . Enos ( pronounced like the tablets ) . Short for someone who knew everything ( even though mostly he did not ) . People would say "Don't ask me , ask him Enos'. The "Vault" . Another way to say Greefswald. Stealing kit was called "organising" stuff. Kit would be "organised" back and forth. And Moer Koffie. That "coffee" that they brought out in those bain maire type holders. And lastly Blue Stone. Potassium Permangenate they put in the custard to keep the wanking rate down in basic training .
