- National servicemen conscripted into the South African Defence Force used a language of their own. It was made up from Afrikaans, English, slang and techno-speak. Some of it was funny, some of it clever, and a lot of it downright crude.
In part one we give you the A to M of some of the more common terms used.

Visagie - A term for a service dodger who studied law at Potch, drove a red alfa romeo and kept your girl company while you were on the border, was usually followed by a "dear johnny". Originaly it's an Afrikaans surname of French huguenot origin.

Corn flakes were also known as "Kameel skilfers", [Camel dandruff] and tinned mixed veg was "shrapnel."
I was 18 months on the border. Some of these I had not heard before. And, many of these made me laugh.

I understand this is a long shot but I've been trying to find a specific photo of the South African military during the Border War from a military magazine circa 1980s

As a small boy of 12 or 13 growing up in 1970s Detroit sadf fighting Communists in Namibia and Angola were my heroes.
United States had just lost its first war in Southeast Asia and these South African young men we're still kicking ass for the Free World.
Here in the Detroit area and Southeast Michigan, we were dealing with homegrown communists since the 1960s. many of our relatives and neighbors have fled Europe and communism.
Though these soldiers are now aging veterans my hats are off to you. an admirer.from afar

7 SAI started at Bourke's Luck base near Graskop, they later moved and were replaced by the dog school at Bourke's luck. It was the highest elevation for any military training base at the time. Previously it was a missionary station. I believe Mariepskop radar station would have been the highest situated operational base. Remember Majuba, the tall hill outside the base, and the 2,4 km route to the sawmill and back...
The Signals emblem is Mercury, Messenger of the Gods (also known as Hermes in Greek mythology). Also known as "Jimmy the C*nt". Eros was the Roman God of Love - the Greek Cupid.
Jam stealer was a term we used to refer to those working in the stores. They had full access to all perishable and non-perishable food stuff, hence jam steelers.
A Dak is a DC-3 Dakota (not a DC-4 which is something else)
Thank you, brought back memories. Gypo was also used as a verb meaning adapting something to be used in a different way than that for which it was intended. Killick is a type of anchor such as was depicted on the rank badge of a Leading Seaman, hence Killick.

We called them tampon tiffies
I ended up with a broken back & was in 1 Mil for a while where I saw Uli Schmidt who was a captain tampax tiffie
Parabats were also referred to as a "Vleis Bom"

Thanks for the memories. Just one point. There was never ever a shortage of esbit stoves. I had so many that I still have one left today 44 years later !!!

This Esbit Stoves looks exactly the same like the german army stoves and Esbit tabletts in the 70s,80s

"Kas" means closet. Cage in Afrikaans is "Hok" ;)
By the time we were finished with an opfok, we didn't have much left in us to shit. Hence the phrase Afkak. Jy het klaar gekak voordat jy eers begin het. This video brought back a few good memories and chuckles.

We called it "Skrapnel Hoender" (Afrikaans) Shrapnel Chicken, looked like a grenade was shoved up a chickens backside and detonated. Usually Chicken-Alla-King. 6SAI ;^)
7SAI Bataljon is not Upington. It is Phalaborwa
Gyppo actually refers to Egyptions for whom the allied soldiers had a low regard when stationed in Egypt during WW2
A lot of Rhodesians , and South Africans came to the U.K. in the eighties, and joined the part time Territorial Army, and used to call South Africans , Slappies.
I think the slang came from the Rhodesian brush war.
Anybody got any idea where the nickname came from.
Slappies....slapgat. a call up dodger.....no guts to do his bit.
Just a correction. - The "Dak" or "Dakota" was a DC3, or its military version, the C47. The DC4 was a four engined aircraft known as the "Skymaster".
Larry Griffiths 100% right Larry!! The DAK had two "Pratt and Whitney" Twin Wasp engines and the Skymaster had four!!
Remember flying the old DC 3 from Ondangwa to Eenanha, 54Btn. Used to call them the Vomit Comet.
Dakota is the brits/CW air forces name for the C-47 Skytrain or simply the Gooney Bird during the Vietnam war phase

I had fantastic treatment at 1 MIL.
Better than any public hospital of the time.
7SAI was Phalaborwa, not Upington. I did basics there in '82.

I remember hairy back being a reference to Rhodesian soldiers.....could be wrong.
Afrikaans speaking chaps were often referred to as plank, rock spider or dutchman. In turn English speaking chaps were called rooinkek or soutie. Either way, when the s...t hit the fan, we were one!!!!

Gippo Guts! What happens when mess food consumed was at times "off".
Bliksem broer. Not so much that the food was off but eating off a Varkpan. By the time you got to wash yours from a hot water soap wash basin to a rinse off cold water basin, 500 varkpanne had already been through the process and the water was not hot any more and there was a layer of greasy fat on the water. Memories.

You would have hated it, but loved it at the same time. You got to play with expensive military toys, always had somebody watching your back. You could rely on a friend taking one for the team because of you. Good food, three times a day, every day.

The cutline was also referred to as the yatti,and the dakota as the kots koets(puke carriage).No reference of toilet paper(white gold).

Garry nickname for the Land Rover
Gharrie not Garry. The name was bought back by the South African soldiers who fought in North Africa during WWII. Gharrie was the British Indian Army name for the horse drawn General Service Wagons.

Mistake at chicken parade; says 7 SAI and "Upington" in brackets. 8SAI is in Upington, and at 8 SAIs emblem it says "Phalaborwa" in brackets. I was at 8 SAI....
Another one is "floppie" a word given to dead enemies round up and put in the nets and then carried away by helicopters, their arms and legs would hang out the gaps and flop.
Your definition makes more sense. I looked up "floppie" and was told it was a derogatory term for a black person.

A Land Rover was called a Gharri or Garry from the English army who got the word from India, meaning various types of transport originally.
Anti Aircraft were Budgie Gunners, Maintenance Unit personnel were Meit Naai, Tankers were Trommel Drywers,
Rooi Doibie- when you screwed up and got serious opfoks, but not enough to go to DB.
Kas was your metal bedside cabinet.
Mechanics were called Tiffies.
Medics were called Tampax Tiffies.
We Klaared in, and klaared out of the Mag.
Insult: Fuck you and the train you klaared in on.
Insult: Befrug my met n pynapple- fuck me with a pineapple!
DD1 - If you broke the rules, you got klaared aan, put on a charge.
MPs were also called
RP, or Regimental Police were Roomys Polisie. Ice cream police.
Oppie- Op fok.
2comma4 / 2,4 the timed distance we had to run in fitness tests.
One pip loot, two pip loot or looty.
Navy - Ice cream boys because of their white uniforms.
Slaan dekking- hit the ground like there was incoming fire.
Houding also referred to the faded state of your browns.
Bos Hoed- Bush Hat.
Your virgin is showing- the band around your bos hoed stitched together formed a vertical line which had to be at the back always, or your virgin was showing.
Groenmannetjies- What your corporal saw inside your dirty weapon.
Tokkeltou- 1 meter or 1.5 meter line that could be linked together indefinitely by a loop and a toggle at either end.
Army saying: Tikkel Tokkel, ek voel fokall.
Saying: Ek skud piel, meaning I'm doing nothing because I just don't care. Used with a hand movement by your genitals.
Saying- (usually in disgust during an inspection of your kas) Dit lyk soos n hoer se handsak. It looks like a whores handbag.
Fuel Tablet- for cooking/heating your food. I never saw those ones you mentioned.
There are so many more as well, but enough of this, if I carry on, I might just become a PF.

Where is the name Owambo piele came from?I don't think we Owambo have such big thing yo. By the way the author of the slings left the PB which guys use to refer to our people.
