In this video I will show you how to create a living hinge from scratch.
This will allow you to start creating you own original ideas with be dependent of other websites or software. It's actually quite easy.
I suggest creating a folder in your art library and saving your hinges as you create them. You never know when you might be able to reuse the same hinge in different designs.

Living hinges can open up tons of possibilities. Don't be intimidated.
Where are you sourcing your 4.5mm wood?
@@flmoose1 I get 2' x 4' sheets of Birch, Oak & Maple from the local big boxes, Lowe's & Home Depot. They claim it's 1/4" but it's not.

A good video on creating living hinges. This is the only video which explains the process in s simpler way. No formula, No maths required. Finally I have learnt the basics of creating a living hinge for any project. Thanks for explaining the complicated process in a simpler and easy to understand way.
Glad it was helpful! "A simpler way" is what you might expect from a simple person. I don't know enough about the math to know a different way of doing these. I just know what works for me. I used to say, "Do not try to duplicate, simulate, or emulate anything I'm doing. I can't be held responsible for any losses if you do. Loss of material or loss of a limb. Cause I don't know what I'm doing." I figured out what works for me and share it. I've had no training with this software or lasers, other than searches on TH-cam. So, I thought I'd share the whole learning curve. When I go back and watch some of the first videos, going back to the day the postman delivered my very first laser, they can be quite funny. I've come a long way in less than a year. None of this is difficult, it just takes practice and not being intimidated by the software. Thanks for watching.
Don't worry about the time and mistakes Steve! Making the mistakes is how we learn! Thanks for the *great video!*
I woke up this morning to the realization that if I created the position on the piece for the second row first, I'd only have to create one complete array. (Head smack)
How could anyone not continue to watch through the end 🤣 Steve I have learned so much from your videos I have been using Lightburn for the last years off and on with my newest Longer Ray 5 10 watt I have learned to do a lot more with it because of your videos. thank you.😁🛫
Steve, I keep learning watching you guys. Okay to not be rehearsed...keep it real. Keep them coming.
I just came across your video and thanks. Very clear, concise and easily followed. I have 2 monitors setup and play the video on one so I can stop and start it while creating the hinge on the other. I've played with living hinges before, but your process makes it so much easier (for me anyway) to create them. I appreciate seeing the mistakes. It shows me that it can happen to anyone. If I said that I haven't made any mistakes in my Lightburn journey, I'm only fooling myself.
Glad it helped! Be sure and subscribe.
Steve, you are a BLESSING!!
Thank you for explaining how to make this from scratch. Looking forward to other videos and the new channel. Keep up the good work!!!
This video was awesome but I'm not sure if you said whether or not the pattern is free... 🙂
Seriously, though, this video is incredibly helpful. I stuck with you to the end and I'm going to be rewatching it again as I walk through the steps with you.
Leaving in the mistakes helps me recognize what I've done wrong when I do the same thing AND it teaches me how to fix it.
Thank you so much for being a great teacher!
What a unique idea living hinges
I use them in a lot of my designs.
Thanks for your time in doing this video. Excellent Tutorial.
You are welcome!
Thanks Hobo, I’ve wanted to make one for a while, now I can(try). Like you I started out with the XTool 10w and also have the 20w but mine have so far been pretty much trouble free. I’m glad you and the other fellows have teamed up and share your knowledge to the laser public.
Very Nice example Steve of a live hing
Cheers Fred
Thank you 🙏 this was very helpful. I was wondering if you could do a video on how to make the finger joints. I have no end of trouble making the line up
I will look at doing that in one of the upcoming videos since I have been working with tabs and slots recently. This may be content that others would appreciate as well. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! Wonderful video! I just found your video. Awesome. Looking forward to checking it out.
Commenting as Steve from Paracordia-UK. A very informative video well explained. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Steve brilliant as usual
Excellent video! Thank you!!!! Downloaded your files! Thank you!!!!
Glad you like them!
Nice. I see birdhouses in my future...
Very informative. Glad i stumbled onto this video. Thank you.
Awesome looking project Steve. Thanks for sharing it.
My next few videos will center around techniques used to craft the bookmark. I will then be posting the files to build this bookmark on youtube.com/@lasermakersrealm for free.
Great tutorial as always👍thanks for taking the time to make this video. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Me, too. I realized there is a slightly quicker way to create the arrays. I'll show that time saving tip when I do the video on the slots and fingers. Thanks for watching.
Steve another great video, I need to try designing my own living hinges now, very intimidating. Thanks for the great content.
Once you've made your first successful hinge, the intimidation goes away. They get really easy and they open the door to all kinds of possibilities.
Hi Hobo, thank you for your sharing. I learned so much about the living hinge. That gives me a great idea of how to create my stuff.
It's my pleasure. I really enjoy designing my own project. Even if it's simple. I have more pride in the simple items I make than any elaborate project I buy. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome job I learned alot from your video
This project was the first time I created one of these from scratch. I awoke this morning to the realization I could have done the arrays a different way that would've been a little quicker. In my next video I'll be showing how to design and place the fingers and holes in a design. I'll also show the slightly quicker way to do the arrays for the living hinge. Stay tuned.
Great video, Thanx
Glad you liked it!
Thank you Steve for sharing your knowledge and making these very detailed videos They are extremely helpful. Did I see you do the math in the width bar when you multiplied the two radiuses?
Yes I did. In most of the fields where you enter a numerical value, you can do calculations. Not all of them, but most. Not only calculations. But if you can also enter abbreviations, like in, ft, mm. You can do a lot in those fields. Thank you for watching.
This is a great video! Thanks
You're very welcome!
Might be a good tool to add to Lightburn.
That would be nice. Simply enter the desired size and number of initial cuts and presto! That would actually be pretty simple programming.
Thank you, very helpfull
Thank you for watching. Stay tuned. The next video will be how I design and place the fingers and holes in a design.
Why did you say you needed 4 spaces when you were figuring out the uncut material? Thanks for the video I have wanted to do this for a long time
5 cuts with 4 spaces of 4.5 mm between them. Your rows should always be alternating with one less row than the orginal row and ending on the same number you started with. For example, 5,4,5,4 or 6,5,6,5,6. In this case I started with 5 cuts with 4 spaces between them. The spaces needed to be 4.5mm. This spaces totalled 18mm that needed to be subtracted from the overall width to give ne the total length of cut material to be divided by the five cuts. Does that help?
Nice
Thanks
Köszönjük!
Örömömre szolgált. Köszönet a támogatásért!
im having a hard time cutting anything on a 5 watt . the thickest i can cut is 2 to 3 mm would i be able to do both projects you showed?
Can you? Possilby. But I would say it would be like trying to carve a 16 lb turkey with a 3" Swiss Army knife. You could do it. But it would take forever and it probably wouldn't turn out that great. I have a 5W. It's great for really fine, detailed engraving. But I would never try to cut with it.
do you have the purse pattern?
I have that design for sale in my Etsy shop. Etsy.com/shop/CreationsByHobo I spent entirely too much time, over 3 months and 14 different versions, to give that one away. The description on Etsy even has the links for the chains and hardware I now use. Finding the right hardware was a bit tricky, too.
I have had my CO2 for about 3 years. Done a lot with it. Never done the living hinge.
Be sure to subscribe to the new channel youtube.com @lasermakersrealm I'll be sharing quite a few projects on that channel that use a living hinge. I just uploaded a simple, fun project there today.
