    Don't forget to get on top of the rust on the front chassis legs under the bonnet. I saw it in a previous video. If left to rust further it will have all the crash protection of a wet paper bag!

    Swear by my Osram Nightbreaker Lasers. As someone who drives 50k+ a year doing a lot of miles in the dark, they completely changed my view of the road without dazzling anyone else. I originally bought them when it was silly expensive per bulb so glad they’re a reasonable price again!

    Not surprised that the suspension is not feeling that good, those coils looked very corroded. You were very lucky with that brake pipe, often wondered why manufacturers changed to steel pipes from copper apart from being more squash resistant and cheaper.
    I had a local repair garage that was good on making custom stainless exhausts, he had a vast stock of various bends and diameter sections, using the old as a pattern, he welded up a new one in a day. Sadly he retired a few years ago and sold the premises, he was in his eighties then, the two 'lads' working for him went on to local main dealers.

    Good to see the Alpha Romeo has an MOT as you know in N.S.W we have yearly regestration inspections and the tester never checks the head light alinement they check if they work also there is a lot of rust issues on the Alpha all that salt used to melt the snow

    Good luck curing the aircon! I presume there must be a leak in the refrigerant circuit - all those pipes and hoses and connectors, not to mention the super-high-quality heat exchangers. Back in the day, FIAT's attitude to quality was "the car has a 12-month warranty, so it doesn't matter if everything fails in the thirteenth month". The STATE of the brand-new heat exchangers when they were sent to Borletti (the HVAC system supplier) was sometimes ASTONISHINGLY bad, but FIAT didn't care as long as they were cheap. Even a certain formerly-British manufacturer (with a terrible reputation for most things) was fussier about what they got.

    Great job, Matt. Lovely to see the old girl alive again. The Alpha needs some rust abatement and then a trip to Krown Rustproofing. You don't want it getting any worse under there. I think your idea of some comparisons is great. Can't eait

    An easy job, famous last words. 🤣
    Looks like you were right to take the car to a specialist on this occasion and worth it for the pass.
    Interesting you mention exhaust hangers as I've had to manipulate the one on my paten part back box to stop it striking the chassis rail.
    The joys of old cars.

    Keep up the great work. Can’t wait for more updates. Still cannot believe how easy it is to run a furious fleet in the UK. It would be a nightmare down in Australia running such a fleet. I worked out that it would cost £4500 in registration fees (road tax) per year in my home state of Victoria Australia. I don’t know how you manage to do it.

    • @phillipevans9414
      @phillipevans9414 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anakinskywalker. The trick here is to make sure your fleet contains "classics" (over 25 y.o) so they can be registered on club rego (much cheaper), and Shannons classic insurance is also very affordable. Cheers!

    Another road legal, nice one. Sometimes you got to "Bite the bullet", I got mechcanic friend couple of streets away and even he gives in sometimes and takes in to work with him, no shame in admitting defeat. Hope the hard lines for the brakes on o/s/r are ok, guess they going to need changing soon? Keep this going and you'll have a car for each month of the year. The P6 and W123, will be icing on the cake, once done.

    • @phillipevans9414
      @phillipevans9414 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Mullins. Yeah. I'm glad I live in Australia and don't have to put up with much in the way of rust here - aside from on now very old (pre galvanised) models. I just bought a '93 Ford Fairlane that is basically rust free and original (that kind of thing doesn't look very possible in wet old blighty). Cheers!

      @@phillipevans9414 I have seven cars with only 2 under cover in the blue mountains west of Sydney. Every year they are covered in snow and I’m hard pushed finding rust on any of them. 3 are over 20yrs old. The rest 12-15yo.
      These are the same age as Matt’s cars but he has a constant battle with corrosion.
      But then again, this is an Alfa. Nuff said

      I'm an Aussie who lived in UK for 22 years coming home in 2010. I have direct experience of running classic cars there and here. The big issue you may not be aware of is the use of salt on Brit roads in winter - this especially impacts older classics if you choose to use them during this period. Granted some cars are more susceptible to rust, even without the salt issue due to lower body design and the wet weather. Older Italian cars have never weathered well on Brit roads and lets face it even here in Oz they rusted - my dad had Fiats and Alfas in the late 60s/early 70s in Sydney and he had to be on top of this (yes there was poor quality steel). Conversely back in south London during my time there I saw many 1960/1970s classics parked on the street (as many homes of a certain era have no garages or off-street parking) and through sheer dedication these cars were in lovely condition, I always marvelled at these lovely cars as I walked to the pub - parked on the street everyday! At the end of the day its all about how dedicated you truly are to conserve your passion!? I learnt a few years back here in Sydney an old MG I once owned that was in immaculate condition when sold in the 1980s b4 I left for UK, was now a rusted out wreck on a central west farm - granted whose to know what happened in the owners life re/family/health etc but still it was a shame to hear, as it was such a lovely car in a very rare spec and totally original when sold - and no salt was used in its demise. But yes we are lucky here in regard to our climate.

    • @fugawiaus
      @fugawiaus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marknelson5929 yeah, I am aware of the salt problems in blighty and the problem with the roads not drying out as quick as here in oz. certain US states have the same problem.
      It’s just such a shame to see these beautiful cars turning to dust in front of your eyes.

    If the clutch is anything like it is on the GT JTS (should be, gearbox is the same) then you'll probably need to drop the front subframe off the car to do it. Definitely take the time to have it blasted and powder coated while you're there because the one on my 146 project car didn't look as un-flakey as it should have.

    I assume the the MOT inspection is mostly to ensure the vehicle is safe for you and others around you to drive on the road, which is a very good thing. Here these types of inspections are on a state by state basis with different rules. Some states are strict while others are not, and some don't have an inspection at all. Having said that it seems that a government (any government) could go too far with inspection requirements and infringe on personal liberties. Failing an inspection due to non-functioning windscreen washers would be considered ...... well..... ludicrous over here. Again I completely agree that an annual inspection is a very good thing. It just seems that some pass/fail criteria are meant more to garner revenue than to keep others safe. I know this is a shocking opinion that may cause controversy! By the way I've not had a vehicle inspected since the mid 1980s.

    Great that you've got the 145 thro it's test and back on the road.
    I know only too well, the pain and anxiety Alfas cause after owning a few years ago, and yes while they're enjoyable to drive and look at, they try your patience.
    I don't fully understand why this is though? Has the quality control of Fiat who's owned them for 35 years not been passed on to Alfa. They develop such weird faults that the same collection of components, put together by the same company but badged as a Fiat, simply don't.

    Comparisons; it'd be cool if you setup a couple of cameras at ends of a runway and drag race a pair of cars against one another.
    Have one car on the left, one on the right, then edit the separate runs together so that there of are two of you, drag racing each other, side-by-side on screen.
    Similar to how Robert at Aging Wheels edits himself into the same frame with a left/right separation at filming time, but racing yourself.

    The rear of the car looks very rusty on the suspension components, those bottom arms in particular. I've known someone with a 145 a few years ago have the arm rust so badly it snapped in half and dig Into the road, strangely same thing happened to my p6 when the rear elbow gave in (luckily only doing 20 at the time). I wouldn't go coilovers unless you can't get originals, it'll be just another modified alfa!
